What to look for when inspecting a Car

G'day Ozbargainers,
I am looking at the purchase of a 2014 Subaru WRX,
The contention of my question, pretty vague, is how to identify if a car is a safe purchase (up to scratch), e.g if modification, tyre wear
Also any questions I should ask the seller
Cheers

I generally just get a RACQ/V inspection to verify the car is up to scratch.

Make sure you check the headlight and blinker fluid and check the owner has been using elbow grease in the services. Other than that it'll be good to go.

    • Lol why'd they downvote you

  • Nice, only what should I look for when I'm in the car/ open the bonnet

    • Sorry didn't @euphemistic post

Make sure it ain't a steam room with two Germans having a steam bath

Chrisfix on YouTube has a couple of decent videos in what to look for - here's one of them

There is plenty of blogs, articles and videos that you can spend weeks consuming. If cars are not your thing, ask someone who knows about them well to help you during the inspection. A RAA/RACV inspection may be beneficial for you.

    NRMA pre-purchase inspection
i would not buy a used car without doing this

This. If you had to ask the question, the answer is pay someone to do it.

check it has tyres, engine etc. Also take a torch and have a good look around for leaks. Any smoke blowing. Make sure you check if it's been in any accidents, make sure there is no money owing. Also you should get balance of warranty, so if there is anything wrong with it you're safe until sometime in 2017 assuming a 3 year warranty. Make sure to check service history as well, and keep asking the seller questions…. Good luck.

Can't believe no one has mentioned it: make sure you check under the bonut!

    • +1

Yes! Always check under the bonut things first - you could drive away and have the engine blow off

engine exhaust smoke, shifting through the gears or paddle shifters, odd colour change could mean accident, ask about the ks etc etc google what to look for when inspecting used car :D

    • Engine exhaust smoke especially from a cold start.

As it's still under warranty, I'd just check that it has been serviced and hasn't been in an accident/thrashed.

    It's still a new car.

However WRXs hold their value very well, so I'd be inclined to buy a new one, bigger nicer wheels and new tech in the MY16.

  • Btw Guys just bought a MY16 WRX from a young woman, 36k kms for $37,500. Cheers

From a quick Carsales search, not sure why you wouldn't go for this one

Or this one which is drive away, and includes free servicing

      • Great find that one!

That made me cringe. A brand new car for the exact same price range… Poor Squatter.
