Great prices for a couple of fantastic lens.

The 17-50 makes an ideal everyday lens. I'm moving to it from the Tamron equivalent which recently died. By all reports the Sigma is even sharper.

The 70-200 would make a great telephoto lens. Bulky but it has to be being such a fast lens F2.8.

A bonus is that this seems to be Aussie stock (i.e. not grey) so 2 years local warranty is included. Can confirm it is indeed Aus stock with tax invoice included.

First post so be brutal :)

Seriously though, great prices for these lenses. There's others in the store which seem good value too, these were just the 2 that were on my radar. Not really sure how they can offer them so cheap (even without the 10% eBay deal their prices are still cheaper than the big Hong Kong seller).

  • The 17-50 is a killer lens.

The 70-200 is an excellent option if you don't want to spend big bucks on the Canon, sharp and distortion free across the range, but keep in mind that it focus breathes like a MF at close distances.

    • Yeh, I only picked up the 17-50. I just wouldn't use the 70-200 enough…

  • I don't think I would buy a Sigma 17-50mm lens online. When I bought mine about 3 years ago, they had a reputation for a fair variability in sharpness, especially at the corners. I went into Digital Camera Warehouse with my Canon body and tested them. The display lens wasn't too bad, so I said I would buy one. The first two new lenses they brought out were not good at all, and fortunately the third (and last one in stock) they had was nice and sharp.

It is a nice lens if you get a good one.

It seems C.R. Kennedy (the Sigma importer) offer a calibration service http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1929390 if it's a bit off so I'm not too concerned. As an aside, DCexpert must be C. R. Kennedy's eBay front as my Paypal payment went to them!

  • How does this compare to the standard kit lense that comes with canon cameras, the 18-55mm?

    • +1

MUCH better. Much sharper, faster (f 2.8), and better in pretty much every aspect except size and weight. The standard EF-S 18-55mm lens is not great - the EF-M 18-55mm for the mirrorless cameras is good, but the standard DSLR EF-S lens is pretty average really.

      • I agree. Bought this Sigma 17-50mm two years ago for $389 before Christmas. Its a great price for an excellent lens. Images are tack sharp and bright with a slightly warmer tone than the Canon 18-55mm kit lens. I also get more shadow detail with less noise from this lens compared to the Canon kit lens. I take most of my photos around 24-35mm focal length, and usually stopped down to f8. The image quality is gorgeous for landscapes and street photography. The Sigma's one limitation is the bokeh, which is quite busy and distracting - but this is expected, its a zoom lens and if you have a nifty fifty for those shots then this Sigma is a gem of a lens for all other needs.

    • STM version is quite good for kit lens. This lens is the best third party crop sensor lens available at this price. Comparable to the more expensive EF-S 17-55mm 2.8 at close to a third of the price.

Have bought lots of gear from this seller over the years and he's always been great to deal with and offers excellent local pricing.
