Panasonic 4K LED 55 Inch VIErA TH-55DX640A $998 (RRP $2,499) at Retravision

730

This is the TV: http://www.panasonic.com/au/consumer/televisions-projectors/…

Cheapest I've found anywhere. Price seemed to have dropped a few days ago. Limited to a few stores but free metro delivery, seems to be a stock runout.

I bought one yesterday. It's cost price, the sales guy seemed shocked and thought it was a mistake. Amazing TV, personally very happy it.

i didnt know theres still retravision stores round

    • +1

oh wait i see them its mostly WA side

      • I guess it's a trade off. We don't have Bing Lee over here.

        • theres no bing lee in Melbourne :(

        • We don't have Bing Lee over here, but there's a Retravision.

        • @mrwillc:

You're right, there's only one Bing Lee store in the whole of VIC. They have a regional store at Wodonga on the Victorian side of the VIC/NSW border. Go figure.

      • IIRC the nearest RV to the east coast is somewhere in SA.

Plus Vote for Retravision still being a thing

  • Shiiiiit that's a good price.

Also, the last Retravision near me that I knew about became a Betta Electrical a couple of years ago, also surprised they're still kicking.

I think I actually have an old RV sport like gym bag kind of thing from years ago too. Antique.

No local stores, but $61 shipping ($100 including delivery insurance) for that price seems pretty reasonable to me.

    • Same delivery fee here. (South West WA) The insurance is a bit steep I thought.
Even if they had in stock, I wouldn't buy local. My last 50" TV I got from them, was faulty, offered me a lesser (and cheaper) model replacement. I refused. All the while my fridge was faulty too and the manufacturer had no stock of same model fridge. They offered store credit of that value……my initial cost. Chose a fridge to replace, offered their best price, walked into HN, same fridge there was $600 cheaper posted price, no haggling. They must have been quoting full RRP. My stereo surround system was faulty, just outside 12 months warranty period, manager told me, well, you did only pay $600, you shoujd have bought something better. All this after Bosch washing machine, Panasonic microwave, all small appliances, electrical goods, all purchased through same store when I got my own place after settling my divorce and leaving with nothing. After some grief and that fiasco, I finally got my money back on fridge and TV and was told not to come back into the store….
HN dropped another $200 of the fridge and free delivery….I simply go back there now. My friends mum just immigrated and bought a whole house full of electrical goods. All from local HN after seeing the dealings if the local RV store
Retravision probably thought I'd bought everything so wasn't a customer to come back for major purchases for a long while.

    • Would not want to fly it to NSW, costs more than the TV.

Air Freight (from WA) [est. 1-3 business days] $1,182.13

  • price match at JB?

    • Ignore me.

      • +2

        NO, UR NOT MY MUMMY!

  • if only bing lee and retravision combined, all those sweet sales would be nation wide instead of state specific

  • +2

You may have to change the rrp there, it shows 1498 and not 2499. Thanks

    • -1

      Says 2499 on panasonic website

    • The rrp is from the Panasonic website. $1,498 is what it was last available for. I'm aware nothing sells for rrp but it indicates the market bracket it was originally pitched to.

Just for comparison this tv is the same price as the jbhifi 55DX600U at $998 (rrp $1,799), despite being a significantly better model.

      • Do you mean TH-55DX640A is a better model or the 55DX600U?

      • -1

It doesn't indicate anything actually, it's just an irrelevant number.

        • +3

Well, it doesn't indicate anything is correct.

It's highly relevant because it causes an automatic and subconscious process to occur in viewers brains that causes them to see more value than they would have had they viewed what the item is being sold for but hadn't seen the RRP number.

In other words: the number distorts people's perception of the value here.

  • +2

Not that they list it but the twin tuner is great to have in the TV also.

    • +1

does it? Its only says USB-HDD Recording

  • HDR10?

    • No HDR support at all according to the product page unfortunately.

      • +2

Yep, this makes it a no go as far as I am concerned. Premium HDR is a must.

        • +1

Yep. No good as a gaming tv then. HDR10 or no deal.

        • Premium HDR doesn't exist at this entry level bracket. I bought the DX700A last month, it has HDR but not what they called 'premium'

    • +1

The price should tell you straight away it doesn't have it.

I think the cheapest HDR TV in that size is an LG, and that's about $400 more when on sale.

      • Based on the original RRP of $2495, then there are plenty of 55” HDR TV at that and below.

  • +3

Why does it say 'Low Resolution' on the marketing image, like it's something to promote?

    • It means someone didn't update that image with the correct one. i.e. The image of the TV is low res, not the TV's playback.

    • Haha I thought the same thing

  • Upscaling I presume? Suitable for gaming?

I looked into 4k a while back and allegedly it was a disaster with console gaming.

    • PS4 Pro supports 4K gaming. Perhaps that would be the gaming console to get for this. http://www.theverge.com/2016/11/9/13572236/sony-playstation-…

      • I need support for older consoles.

        • Well then the PS3, original PS4 and Xbox One would be 1080p upscaled to 4K other than the Xbox 360 which would be 720p upscaled to 4K. The television would be doing the upscaling.

        • @hollykryten:

This issue is audio/video desyncing during the upscaling process. This is because the upscaling is driven by the TV rather than the console.

Thankyou, I know youre trying to help, but I don't think you can.

  • Retravision VIP night 29th Nov prices are cost plus 5%… so does this mean this TV goes up in price if its at cost?? ;)

    • +1

Only if you believe your getting items at "cost" + 5%.

      • Cost ha. Yes it's likely retail store cost from warehouse. But don't mention the rebates attached

  • My old sharp 55 is still working perfectly omg.

    • It is not even a LED.

      • I think I have a similar one, it's a 52 Aquos. I didn't appreciate it that much until I put a top of the line plasma next to it, and while the plasma was better the image on thr Sharp was pretty good

  • I can confirm that they have ~50 left at the moment, the offer is around until Sunday or when stock runs out.

  • I want to get this for the mother in law but worried about warranty / returns as being in Vic as opposed to the JB deal

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-entertainment/hd-televisio…

She probably won't care ( or know ) about 200hz vs 100 but it is a lot better…

  • HDR10 ftw. I'm regretting missing the Sony bargain sale, $999 for the 49" X8000D

    • Boxing day sale……..yep, should have been on OzB that day

      • no, it was the Sony store sale a week ago

        • Bugger. Missed that as well. Geez, I really am crap at this ozbargaining lark……

  • Runs on Firefox OS. WTF?

    • Firefox OS has better review in most cases than the buggy Android TV. Problem with this TV is not the OS, it's the remote that's so crap

      • Why is the remote crap?

        • +1

It feels like cheap plastic. Using either trackpad or arrow to move the cursor (a bit like appletv if u ever use it, except that apple did it much better). They're hard to press and not that responsive. It's really a let down, as u feel like holding soniq remote, not something u'd expect from panasonic brand

  • 404 error just now. Deal gone?

    • Looks like it.

Only the DX600 left, for the same price as JB.

    • +1

      back on

      • back to 404

  • Anyone compared this against Sony X7000D currently $1098 at JB Hi-Fi
