Cheap/Quality Car Servicing in Melbourne (Preferably Northern Suburbs, near Fitzroy North)

Hey guys,

My Renault Fluence (2011) is due for a 90,000km service. It's been serviced by the log book but hasn't been serviced for 15,000km & 12mo.

The 76,000 km service done a year ago said coolant/brake fluid flush & air filter due next service.

Being a broke full-time student I've been putting this off.

So I'm hoping one of you can recommend a mechanic? Is it worth taking up any of the groupon deals?

I'd be really grateful :)

  • This is from the last service I had done. I feel like it was very pricey haha

You got ripped off bad for a oil and spark plug change.

      • I know, I could've bought 5L of this oil for $45 aaahaha :(

lol.. I just wrote that you could find it for $30-40 in my post below.

I've looked at the receipt again, it doesn't even look like it was at a Renault dealer!

Not to mention $50 for a spark plug?

          Who recommended you this place?

        • @JB1:

My family have been using this mechanic for the last 5 years. They swear by them and got very defensive when I said they were overpriced rolls eyes

Yeah it's not the Renault dealer. It's a mechanic in Geelong, "European Affair"

          @databoi:

I wouldn't say it's overpriced, I would say it's daylight robbery for an independent mechanic to charge that much.

I would bet a Renault dealer would be cheaper.

I have a couple of mechanics I recommend people to, but they are in the south east. I think they charge a fair price (i.e. $100 an hour) but more importantly I trust them to do a good job.

        • @JB1: I've just posted on ozRenaultSport but would love a recommendation. I'd say it's worth a bit of travel to find a decent mechanic.

          Thanks for your advice!

For European cars, I recommend Nandi Autocare in Keysborough.

It's pretty far from you so I'd look at somewhere close for convenience.

A good mechanic such as Nandi Autocare should be able to service the car no problems, however sometimes it's good to have a relationship with a Renault Specialist. All cars are known for their quirks (and French cars have a lot of them!) so if a problem develops the Specialist is more likely to know how to fix the problems for a particular model as they have come across it before saving time (and your money). That's why I think it's worthwhile to seek out a Renault Specialist.

I've got a good Volvo and VW specialist, but I do the general service my BMW myself (easy) and will also do DIY for my VW going forward as it's old now.

I was going to suggest City Prestige in North Melbourne but they moved to Southbank

I suggest you post on www.ozrenaultsport.com to locate a Renault Specialist that won't cost the earth and will do a better job than the typical Dealer apprentice.

If you want to save some money, I suggest supplying your own oil. You got charged $112 for 5L of oil in your last service, you can find the equivalent quality oil for $30-40 on sale.

    • This is great. Thank you very very much :)

Oh yeah, say no to the Groupon deals.

Cheap labour, but they will sting you on the parts.

  • The cheapest option is DIY.
The service log book should give you the details of what needs to be done.
Its not very difficult to change the oil.
There are youtube videos for oil, filter changes. You can save $$$ but not everyone is up for it.
Good mechanic do charge a premium for labor. Cheap and Quality never go together.
However expensive does not mean quality is guaranteed.
