Razormate Razor Blade Sharpener $2 @ Harvey Norman Berrimah, NT

190

First time poster, not sure of protocol so sorry if it's all ridiculous and out of whack.

Perfect Christmas Gift for The Hirsute

I Discovered a clearance bin of men's grooming bits n pieces this morning in Hardly Normal, Berrimah (Northern Territory). The stickered price on the razormate sharpeners were $29.95, the rack sign said $2. $2! Less than a frikkin ATM charge! Whoopdee doo!

I scooped up 4, leaving probably another 20 in the bin. That's covered my secret santa rounds for this year… :)

Spiel: "Barbers have long used 'strops' to clean and sharpen razors, ensuring a close shave every time. RAZORMATE uses the same friction technology to make the blades feel brand new again." Saves money on disposable razors, delays them going to landfill and maintains a close smooth shave. OzBargain it up y'all

Link to website for limited extra details, no idea if this deal is specific to Berrimah franchise or not.

Also in the rack were shave creams and oils all reduced to $2. For some strange reason there was also a bottle of hardcore floor cleaner in there too. Not recommended for shaving.

  • $10 can you post me one?

I have no idea how well these work, but if I run the blade backwards along my forearm about 15 times before every shave (remember: backwards) then I can make a blade last over a month with 5 day a week shaving of what otherwise is a fundamentalist beard (this is using a Schick Hydro 5)

So the principle is certainly valid and for $2 its probably better than using your arm. On the other hand (pun not intended but I'll leave it), your arm is much easier to find in the morning than some random piece of plastic

I've seen suggestions that strips of old jeans make good strops as well

Any liquid cleaners? It's just grime.. i pressure wash mine.
But for $2…. I'm going to look

      • Just for safety reason, next time try use the bottom of a china bowl the rough bottom round circle (stand bit), run the razor backward and it will last for months. A chopping knife can so sharpen this way.

        • Just for safety reason, next time try use the bottom of a china bowl

Have a tablespoon of cement! Okay to scrape a blade over your face and neck but it's too dangerous to run backwards over your arm?

        • @OzBragain: Try that when you have kids at home in the morning with 1 toilet to share.

        • @dlovep:

If bathroom time is so scarce in your house then go into another room to strop the blade, problem solved :)

It's fine if you don't want to do it but don't overstate the dangers of stropping on an arm or palm.

Reading your method again it sounds a bit rough for a razor blade, kitchen knife maybe but there's no way I'd put a blade near my face after it's been run over something as rough as unglazed porcelain. Power to you if you're happy with it but I don't think it's for everyone.

I have a mate who doesn't shave against the growth and gets 3-4 weeks out of a DE blade. I get 3-4 shaves out of the same blades.

        • @OzBragain: Just for safety reason, I don't think it's for every one. Just an idea I don't mean it's for you or anyone to actually take it. Seems like you just pick on this, anyway have a nice day :)

    • This method has served me well for over 20 years. Go through a blade every 3 months rather than every 2 weeks if I diddnt do it.

    • For $2, it is a great price, I usually wash my razor with hot water, then rub it against my jeans (away direction, so it doesnt cut) to remove the gunk on the razor, wash and tap it again. I swear it shaves better after rubbing.

  • If it helps I've been using a Blade Buddy (same concept different brand) for the last few months and I'm quite happy with it. It adds an extra few weeks to each blade (I use the dollar shave corporate blade)

  • +1 if you thought this was a deal for a mouse/keyboard

  • Thats a bargain!

Because I see this thing advertised on posters in public toilets for $50

  • Can someone confirm if its nationwide? :)

    • +1

Went to my local and checked it out, and it was listed as "on sale" for $20 something (can't remember the price

      • aww shucks, was going to get one for my partner. thanks anyway :)

  • Would love to know if it is nationwide, i was tempted to buy this at $30 but wouldn't pull the trigger at that price.. at $2 I'll go for a drive this evening to get it.

A pyramid works just as well, but less effort.

  • I suspect not nationwide. Just visited HN at Fortitude Valley, Queensland. The Sharpeners were also in the reduced Bin in front of the store but the lowest the Manager could get to is $19 even after asking them to price match the Berrimah Store.

If you get a chance to pick this up at Berrimah then take as many as you can get, really great price!

  • This product cannot "strop" a blade in a disposable razer.

If anything, and if it actually worked, it makes a burr worse. That is because it can only roll the burr in ne direction (back) creating a blunter surface than what you started with.

At best, such a device is simply cleaning off crud from the blade surfaces.

However, look carefully at a disposable razer and you will find that the blades are recessed lower than the side frames. So, when rubbed on the flat surface that this gadget presents, the blades would never touch it anyway.

    Look, and think… http://static.giantbomb.com/uploads/scale_small/1/14520/1312…
