As above I am looking for something that will last, either literally or as a memory.
Any thoughts?

Get her a nice watch, even if she already has one. She may enjoy choosing which one to wear.
These things, engarved with kids/pets names: http://www.mynamenecklace.com.au/Product.aspx?p=2858 ?
Those would be perfect for a really dedicated serial killer.
That's a worry - someone just gave one to my mum.
She should be fine, unless some guy starts handing out donuts at her work and bragging about his boat.
I've passed the 50th milestone (and am a female) so feel qualified to comment. As far as 50th gifts go, for me it is all about opportunities to do something, rather than a piece of something with something engraved on it. I'm far more at the stage of throwing things out than remembering keepsakes. I might appreciate a tasteful decorative something which also has a functional aspect - a totally impractical fine bone china cup for example, but it shouldn't be expensive or given with the expectation to be kept as an heirloom. Just before my 50th you could have given me a travel adaptor or some kind of travelling gadget, or paid for a swish night's accommodation at my holiday destination and that would have been gratefully received. You don't say what the relationship is of you to the recipient. I guess this would change things, but honestly, I'd rather receive nothing but your time or companionship than the goods mentioned so far. However, I am told I am somewhat unconventional in my approach - so maybe take my input with a pinch of salt.
You're not the only "unconventional" one ms_caz! I'm the same, just hit the 50 mark this year and I'd also prefer doing something that's memorable or a once-in-a-lifetime experience rather than receiving jewellery (which I hardly ever wear anyway) or something similar - and to be honest, that's been my preference for at least the last decade. My partner and I don't worry much about birthday or Christmas presents, we'd rather save the money up and do something really great whilst we're on holidays or when one of us really wants/needs something rather than gift-giving just because it's the expected thing on that date. We love to visit zoos and animal parks when we travel and some of my favourite "gifts" have been the close encounters with various animals - patting cheetahs, feeding white lions, having a red panda sit on your lap as you stroke his gorgeous fluffy fur, stroking a tiger (through the bars of course!) … there's any number of experiences you can do (if you're willing to pay the money!) and that's the sort of memory I treasure, far more so than a physical gift. But that's just me, a lot of people probably wouldn't be interested or think it was too expensive, so it's just a suggestion to add to the list :).
having a red panda sit on your lap as you stroke his gorgeous fluffy fur
Sounds awesome. I'm going to save up for this experience now. Cheers
It was fantastic, such an incredible experience! It was at Mogo Zoo on the NSW South Coast. I got to touch and feed two of them whilst they were perched on a branch just above my shoulder level, then they sat me down with a plate of cut-up fruit and one of the red pandas sat on a table next to me but it was only a few seconds before he was in my lap! His favourite was the grapes, so as soon as I picked up another piece of fruit, he would immediately reach out with his front paw and gently hook the edge of my hand with his claws and turn my hand over to see whether it was another grape LOL.
If you would like to get the person a present, here's some suggestions, depending what they already have or might like…
- jewellery box
- something from l'occitane shop (they have lovely fragrances and creams etc)
- concert tickets
- tea pot and good tea eg from https://www.t2tea.com/
- gold class movie tickets
Happy shopping…..
I bought my wife one of those Uberkate neck pendants with her kids names and DOBs on it, made of gold. Not cheap but she loves it and everyone comments on how they like it.
