Feels like its getting cheaper to head overseas than take a domestic flight….

    • The China line would be specifically very popular at the moment I imagine.

been that way for a few years - took the 600 return from melb to tokyo over the 850 return Canberra to Hobart in 2014 -

The other week I paid over $400 for a one way flight from Melbourne to Canberra in economy…

(protip, don't plan weekend trips flying away from Canberra when Monday is the start of a parliamentary sitting week…)

Great prices. Is anyone able to find good prices from Melbourne to Shanghai?

  • SYD TO SHANGHAI PLZ?

Just keep in mind with the January dates listed that Chinese New Year is the 28th on Jan. Generally the entire place shuts down and people visit families (like xmas here) although there are a few festival things and the air might be cleaner due to factories being shut. Lots of locals will be traveling which means transport and hotels are harder to book.

    • Excellent point

I'm a Beijinger and I would more than happy to give you some advice for travelling in Beijing in Chinese New Year

the entire place shuts down and people visit families

Most of travel sites open (e.g. Great Wall, Forbidden City) during the Chinese New Year but open hours varied. Some Chinese will be traveling for the new year, too. the city will be noticeably less traffic. but public transports never stop.

there are a few festival things

will be alright, because local Beijinger (approx. 2/3 of the total population) will stay and celebrate.

the air might be cleaner due to factories being shut

      exactly!

Lots of locals will be traveling which means transport and hotels are harder to book.

I'm not sure about this - but from my experience for economy hotel chaiin (like super8), or 3/4/5 stars hotel (like continental or Novatel), it's ok because they will definitely have some people on duty by the holiday.

  • Just FYI, straight from the top result for "china january weather"

"January is not the most ideal time of a year to visit Beijing. Although it is sunny most of the time, the weather is still bitterly cold and extremely windy and temperatures can drop to -20°C (4°F). However, the frequent snow fall makes this a good skiing season."

Also speaking from personal experience travelling in Winter in Beijing - it is not great. I'd much rather prefer paying an extra $200 to go during spring (albeit on a less premium carrier than Qantas)

    • Yes the weather will be pretty windy, chilled and dry in every city in north China.
most outdoor skiing are available from November to next year February, so you imagine how the weather will be in these day.

    • I've been to Beijing twice to do sightseeing. As cold as it was in Dec (not Jan) it was far better because of the reduced number of people. Plus, having it start to snow lightly on the Great Wall was awesome. Almost magical.

You could always head up to Harbin (probably flmy favourite big city in China) for the Ice and Snow Festival. That would be worth going in January alone.

    • I went to Beijing in November a couple of years ago, it was cold but I still enjoyed it!

  • If only i was not already flying to Paris with SQ - Hopefully this deal happens again for later months.

  • SYD > Vietnam?

  • Any chance on Adelaide to Seoul?

  • again trying to work out that site. so its a 2+ week thing to secure them prices.

kind of crazy really. Spending that much time away to save some cash.

    this one is just…

    Dep. 26/Jan Ret. 03/May

    hahaha. 5 months in beijing?

  • bargain of the year for the flight! even cheaper for the domestic, amazing! booked!

  • Be prepared to stand at immigration for at least 2-3 hours before you can get out and another similar time getting into train as well.

I come here every day hoping to find flights as good as the Virgin/SQ 'sale'…

  • :-( why a deal after i book my flight why the world hate me :-(

  • Remember to hoover up as many properties as possible while you are over there. Have your buyer proxies lined up in advance.

  • thanks op. good bargain..
