Advice on Dealing with Car Dealer - Getting VW Touareg MY16 Fixed under Warranty

My car 18 months old with 27,000km has intermittent clunk noise when braking and now also squeaking noise while gently braking at low speed

I'm planning on taking the car to dealer as its still under warranty.

From what I read squeaking noise seems to be a common issue and people have no luck with fix under warranty as dealers say it's "within specs".

It's quite expensive car, $90k brand new, and I don't think any clunk or squeaking noise should be coming from it nor to be considered "whitin specs"

Now to my question, what is the best line of defence in case dealer will tell me it's "within specs" and I have to live with it.

Thanks a lot

  • Consider your options under consumer Guarantee, by law provided by seller and more comprehensive. You are support by ACCC and state based government agencies.
Warranty is provided by manufacturer and you rely on their terms and conditions (warranty terms) which favour the manufacturer or the seller in this case acting on behalf of the manufacturer as opposed to Guarantee where you deal with the seller only and don't care if the seller involves the seller.

  • Getting the dealer or manufacturer to fix it is one but I would first try to find out what the issue is.
Squeaking noise while gentle breaking is not normal. If the car dealer does not find out what cause the issue I would go to a break specialist to check it. If it's a manufacturing defect then I would take it up with the dealer.
But if it's due to your driving style or normal wear and tear then you would know the dealer was right.
Some dealers are not the best when it comes to servicing.
Breaks can wear faster based on your driving style.

    • The car is fitted with breke sensors that go off when brake pads are worn out and the sensor hasn't gone off yet so I suspect that brake pads are ok.

i still have original brake pads.

I looked online but there is milion things that can cause that.

Brake specialist is good idea but then I'm out of pocket for that.

      • Could it be that the brake pad sensor is actually the typical metal finger that scrapes on the disc when the pads are low? These, fitted to most cars, will squeal with light braking. There isn't a light on the dash (but may be on a flash car)

Edit: just read that the toe-rag has a sensor that will show on the dash when the pads are worn. Apparently there is a wire embedded in the pad that once worn through opens a circuit, and then the light shows. Pads shouldn't be worn out in 27000 km though unless you are in the habit of using them heavily, a lot or rest your other foot on the brake pedal while driving.

  • SpaceBack will be on shortly to let you know

  • Make, Model and year of car might be handy if we are going to diagnose the issue unseen.

OP… Brake clunk .. does this happen when you reverse & apply brakes and then also when you brake going forward for the first time? If so then it is common with most cars and is only the brake pads moving in the calliper.
The squeal can come from hard & cheap brake shoes, the type car yards fit to used cars… OR from worn brake pads.. disc brakes have a squeal pin that rubs on the disc when the pads are at their lowest wear point.
It is very simple to check your brake pads… Worn brake pads are not a warranty item unless they affect the braking performance of the car. A used car only has to pass a regular inspection, like the one when you re register the car each year. Worn consumables are not covered by used car warranty.. this includes tyres, battery, brake pads, etc…

If before you purchase you find those items need replacing you can ask the dealer to fix them but they are not obliged to. They would not be interested in doing so after purchase as all used cars come with some sort of wear to their consumables.

I guess that you purchased this used car without having an inspection done?

    • Hi this only happen when going forward, especially when going downhill not during reverse.

As I said before dont think its worn brake pads, the car is fitted with brake pad sensors to let me know when pads are worn out.

The car was purchased brand new from dealer and still has all original parts.

Have you tried going to the dealer first? How do you know they won't fix it?

What make, model of car is it?

    • Going there today. As I said I was just wondering what my best line of defence is in case I get hit by "within specs" BS.

      VW Touareg

  • do you mean squeaking like a mouse (intermittent squeak squeak that is a short sound) or do you mean a high pitched constant squeal?

squealing is the shims at the back of the pads vibrating - this is not a warranty item - to fix it, the pads need to be removed and an anti-squeal compound applied

    https://www.google.com.au/search?q=anti+squeal&espv=2&biw=19…

squeaking is either a mouse or the piston squeaking as it moves, or the pedal pivot point inside the car or…or…

the clunk - well……does it happen every time you press the pedal? or once at the start of a drive? when the brakes are hot? or cold? is it one wheel or many? do you actually hear it or just feel it? if you are to stand outside the car and someone else presses the pedal, can you hear it? only when it's moving or stationary? you need to provide more info

    Ok…
You will spend $90K on a car, and are whining about spending less than $100 to have it independently investigated.

Hello Bion 83, Im sorry that you are having Brake problems with you 2016 Touareg. It is not uncommon to have you pads requiring change out near 50k and some time to have the disc's machined as well on Touareg's Some times excessive dust will cause the brakes to shudder, and all is required is to have them cleaned. The VW dealer should be aware of this issue and they should at least remove the wheels to check their condition? There are some excellent VW Touareg forum's on the net that covers every issue and problem that you may encounter and plenty of like minded people who are happy to help with solving this problem . I have just purchased a 2012 MY13 V6 TDI 4XMotion Touareg and will be using these Forum's to provide me with assistance if required. If you have no help from your VW Dealer try some 3rd party VW Dealers that are recommended on these forums.
