Charger for iPod Classic (2008)?

Hi all,

Apart from buying the official USB charger from the Apple store for my 2008 iPod Classic (video,160gb), does anyone know of any other chargers that will charge my device via USB?

Looking in the vicinity of a double USB charger for travel, cheers :)

  • Any USB charger will work, if you have the 30-pin cable. A 1A charger should be fine.

    • Definitely does not work with a 1A charger, I have tried at least 10. It needs a higher current, it's quite specific.

USB 1, 1.1 ad 2.0 specification is no more than 2A. So it shouldn't require more than that.

It is possible that it came with its own non-standard USB charger (Eg outputs above 2A) but it will at least charge on a regular 2A socket, or run. Maybe it can do both at the same time even. But it is possible that it can only do one OR the other- and that it might sense a larger supply and then do both at once.

Some chargers can be had that exceed the spec, eg 3A is not too rare. But most are dual types, eg 1x USB socket @ <2A, and 1x USB socket at <1A. (So beware)

        These should be ok, no?

If you are blowing out the chargers, try name brand ones (plenty of SE Asian cheapies are over-rated and catch fire or simply don't supply the current they claim they can). Note: There are plenty of big ones/over spec now though because there are so many USB 3.0 spec ones that also are higher rated to charge the recent wave of power hungry Android phones.

        • This helps a lot, thank you…Will try every charger in my house again, and then try something that's 2A :)

None of my chargers have enough power to charge it, but I know that my ipod will sense when there is too much current and cut itself off, too

        • @CryssieJade: What happens is the iPod tries to draw >1A<2A and finds it can only get 0.9A or so. Then it will shut down to prevent the supply over-heating or catching fire.

If it can only get say 1.5A but needs 2A to charge and power on, it will only power on. If you turn it off or leave it off, I imagine it'll charge quite happily.

An official apple 5 watt charger has input of .15A, and output of 5volts @ 1amp, so any usb charger with similar specs is fine.

maybe try kogan, they have official 5watt apple chargers at $20 incl free post.

    • Thanks, but this doesn't work either. Somehow, the older tech just won't play nice…

      • oh in that case, if you have an older ipod, it only charges using a firewire charger, no usb charger will ever work no matter the specs.

I had an old 2nd gen for years, and have 2 original firewire chargers, they are pretty rare these days, but 1st, 2nd and 3rd gens will only charge using firewire, and some of the older 4th gens as well.

Considering the info you suppied, i thought it was a 6th gen 160gb, but maybe try a firewire charger anyway if it is.

        • My firewire charger works just fine, but it is ageing.

My ipod came with a USB cable, but purchasing the USB charger was an optional extra at the time, so considering the fact I had a firewire charger from an even older ipod, I refused the USB charger at the time.

So it definitely charges with a USB charger of some kind, just none of mine

        • I can tell you for a fact, that apple chargers lately are nowhere near as good as they were back in the day, apple still supply 10watt and 12 watt chargers. They are supposed to be for 10watt for ipad and 12 watt for ipad with retina display.

Maybe you should try one of those, they are alot easier to find than the old 5 watt full bodied apple chargers.
