    some good to knows:
no removable battery or SD card slot (this is normal for Xiaomi flagship phones)
no IR blaster (was present in Mi5)
no Gorilla Glass (mi5), screen will scratch someday, better protect
    no optical image stabilisation (mi5)

    pros
    slighly bigger battery
very good screen and backlighting (min. 1.1 nits, max 600nits, 95 percent NTSC color gamut)
no more glass casing, but fully metal
better camera, but not great in low light
    SD821

a few steps forwards but also a few big steps backwards from older gen mi5 phone.

    • no SD is a huge let down

    • omg no OIS + microSD/removable battery that's a big killer…wat da hell were they thinking…trying so hard to be apple! :(

      • some things had to be cut to preserve a lower price point, plus no doubt all that milled metal, snapdragon chipset and camera probably pushed the cost of production up.

        • Is this the best sub $400 phone to get? What else is out there for around this price range.

          @TightAssDrake:

          LG Nexus 5x
          Lenovo 'ZUK' series
          and ASUS Zenfone 2 series
          worth a look at.

        • @scrimshaw:

          Thanks :)
          Sure will.
          Anything else?

        • @TightAssDrake: anything around the same price range but with decent camera and Hi-res audio?

        • @scrimshaw: Do you know how is ZUK Z2 in comparison with MI5?

        • @pyramid:

          http://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ZUK-Z2-Smartphone-Review…

Pretty cheap at $330AU, older SD820 chipset, 4GB RAM and 64GB of non expandable storage. It takes decent photos.
It can record at 3840x2160 pixels, 30 FPS (Ultra HD resolution) and 720p 960FPS slow motion footage.

But software optimisation is not great, battery life could be improved even though it has a battery capacity advantage. No NFC or IR blaster or other high end features like hi def audio.

I don't know if it supports simultaneous 4G/3g on both sims.

I believe the Mi5 is a better option overall.

        • @scrimshaw: Thanks.

@scrimshaw: I'd avoid the Zenphone 2 Lazer. I've had mine for 9 months now and it's a piece of crap. Sensor doesn't work properly, the software constantly resets itself.

        • @homersyd: Get the Mi5. Selling for a lot less price @ 320$ on Geekbuying. 820 Chipset with 3GB RAM for 32GB version

        • @scrimshaw: sorry one more. Mi5 or oneplus 2?

        • I currently have a Samsung S5, would this be a good upgrade?

          Considering mi5 or mi5s.

        • +2

@pyramid: Mi5 anyday. Better CPU/GPU. Battery is slightly better on the Oneplus 2 though

        • @sbrulz: I think the Mi 5 will soon be below 300 bucks…in the next month or so…

    • +1

I agree. I myself would prefer Mi5 over the S version

  • is this the chinese version/rom or global one without the chinese apps?

    • The global rom for Mi5s has been released yet

      • I would also like to know. Just to clarify, is that "has" or "hasn't"?

  • -2

    Band 28?

    • +2

Really!? No band 28. It's there in the post..

    • bit off topic - but when we look at buying those chinese phones, what are the bands do we need to look for?

Be warned, Geekbuying has a deservedly poor reputation re delivery times. And that's for phones that are established in the market.

  • Is the camera worse on this model than the previous model? No ois doesn't tell anyone anything about how good the camera performs. Having no ois is not necessarily a con, it depends on the sensor being used and the software. The pixel for instance is missing out on that hardware too but takes arguably the best photos and video ever seen on a smartphone. If its worse than previous model, then I agree the camera is definitely a con.

The negatives on scrimshaw list could be matched up to most phones on the market, even phones at triple the price. I'm sure plenty people would agree with his negatives (I agree with his negatives), but at the same time to me it seems scrimshaw list is just being very nitpicky. If those are it's downfall, then pretty much all phones on the market aren't good enough. I can't recall too many phones now offering ir blasters and removable batteries, even the latest Samsungs flagships don't have those features anymore. So yeah if those are faults to you, then you'll have a hard time finding any phones that tick all your boxes, especially at less than $400.

not being nitpicky, I'm just letting peeps know what are the differences between the previous phone or what they stand to lose by upgrading if they owned a Xiaomi Mi5 already. Also backed by a lot of research and reading a thorough review from GSM Arena. If my comment seemed biased, that might be your perception at work but I have tried to balance out by adding some pros and cons.

However, this phone is undoubtedly great value despite it's shortcomings and I can can still approve of it as being a flagship killer… but still missing a lot of features you'd expect from a flagship, like the lack of Gorilla glass (a pretty major oversight in my opinion). It would've a +vote from me if it had unlocked bootloader too, but that is also my honest opinion.
