ING Direct security overkill

They've gone crazy. I'm getting an email and an sms notification whenever I:

  • transfer money from one of MY ING accounts to the other one
  • make a BPayment to someone I've BPaid monthly for the last 5 years
  • transfer out to an account I've made hundreds of transfers to

When I asked them about this months ago they said it was a bug in their new site and they would fix it. Is there a fix? Are my settings on insanely paranoid? Is this happening to you?

I get a lot of notifications from ING, but definitely not one for transferring between my two ING accounts.

  • Obviously they've identified it as a bug, but I'm assuming since then you've kept an eye on your notification settings (assuming they have this)?

  • Notification is set up for sms and email notification when a withdrawal is above a certain amount. It must be applying a very literal definition of withdrawal, so that it applies to withdrawals from me to me.

I can't see any way to make an exceptions list. The only partial fix I can see is to make the withdrawal amount so high it is not triggered.

    • Fair enough.

  • i get some notifications for limit changes, address book changes, etc but not for transfers

  • Seeing that I am, apparently, the only one who gets notified for transferring between saving and transaction account, I will ask them again what's going on.

    • Nope, I think that's just how their notifications work. I get notifications when I make a "deposit" into my transaction account from my savings account. I agree, it would be much better if you could exclude internal transfers.

EDIT: Also I think others just haven't set up custom notifications, so they don't know about this

  • Not had any issues with security as you've described with my ING account. I'm still stuck on Chrome 35 on my work computer and their new website doesn't work on it though.

  • I switched to Macquarie after ING dumped their 2% cashback.

Free ATMs, $0.50 for $100 cash out (not $200 like ING), and I can set up direct debits from the savings account. You can choose the Classic account with no minimum deposit, or with the Platinum account you can get $50 with this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/269799

    • 1.3% on balances over $5000- hold me back.

Macquarie are the millionaires' factory: there customers, not so much.

      • Yep but I just put my savings in another bank.

  • I had this problem where every time I did a Pay Anyone I got the notification / email, but it stopped. It's fixed for me now.
