for anyone who's interested in the SSD tech, these are TLC NAND SSDs meaning that they are the cheapest kind of SSDs to manufacture. it goes SLC -> MLC -> TLC in terms of quality. the more layers in an SSD cell the less read/writes it can handle therefore the cheaper it becomes.

it goes SLC -> MLC -> TLC in terms of quality

I reckon you have that completely arse-about.

Your "arrows" are confusing things, it probably should be:

      SLC > MLC > 3D TLC > TLC

These MX300's are using Micron 3D TLC NAND chips, with 3D most commonly recognised in Samsung 850 SSDs.

      • The MX300's are significantly slower than the 850 EVO's:

        • Doubt it will be noticeable

          @g2420hd:

Seems bloody close, and if Evo was same price get that, if not then MX300????

        • +1

Do note that the MX300 has SLC buffer which gives good write speeds as long as your drive is not full.
The only other thing that is limiting its performance is the 4-channel controller vs 8-channel present on more expensive SSDs

        • Toms Hardware benches have crucial behind Samsung, but close enough that these things are good value.

        • @snuke:

I thought 850 was much more expensive, but i would go evo just cause i prefer samsung if its about the same price.

        • @g2420hd: I think he meant 750 EVO which is the planar TLC version

        • @Davesday:

No, 850 Evo, contextually because that is what the comparison link above is.

        • @snuke: Ah didn't see that coming.

  • I grabbed 2 x 1TB. :)

Nice SSD. All good prices other than the 750GB.
    Current Amazon prices (AUD):
    275GB - $99.48
    525GB - $172.00
    750GB - $230.40
    1TB - $332.90
    2TB - $664.18

The 750GB is cheaper from Kogan's eBay store, even after the discount is applied.

$279.20 from Futu, $254.61 from Kogan.

Not sure if RAMCITY is recommended but they do have the 750GB model (Australian stock) at $257.99 + shipping. Shipping to metro areas is around $9.90 so that brings it to $267.89 (difference of $11.31 when compared to Futu's price).

      • So this is the best Aus deal on the 750 at the moment?

  • Looking for an SSD of at least 400GB with decent (or better than average) performance for my new desktop. Any recommendations?

PCIe SSDs are definitely overkill, but does anyone have thoughts on SATA3 vs M2 (in a PCIe adapter)?

    • +1

That would be Samsung 750 EVO, SanDisk Ultra II and Crucial MX300. 750EVO is planar TLC. I think Ultra II is also planar TLC. But Crucial MX300 is 3D TLC which has better endurance.

      • Urgh all that jargon! Buying SSDs never used to be this difficult. So you reckon that this deal is suitable?

        • I'm in the same position actually. Looking for a >400GB-1TB SSD drive for games. Man they take lots of space these days. I wouldn't pick Ultra II as the reviews seem to suggest they don't have encryption feature. The MX300 has 'enterprise-like' features. The 750 EVO is still a good price but is limited at 500GB max. Dollar for dollar the MX300 750GB is very attractive.

        • @Davesday: >don't have encryption feature.

          For games?

        • @Diji1: Apologies I forgot to add that it is not important for games. But you'll never know how you might use the drive in the future. Obviously not all that important to gamers.

        • @Diji1:
