960

Hey guys, first post, so hope I've done everything right!

Been looking for an iPad Air 2 for my son for school next year and saw Myer had them for $609/64gb and $669/128gb. Went to Officeworks and they price beat it by 5% so got the 64gb for $578.55. Limited stock and some colours are not available.

That's disgusting, part of the reason I don't buy apple, waaay over priced

      • -6

        Because they hold their value?

        • +5

Oh yeah certainly! Technology clearly hasn't improved in the last year…

        • +1

If artificially maintaing a stupidly high rrp a year+ after release constitutes as maintaining value sure.

      • same reason i don't buy porsche or ferrari …. wayyy over priced……

  • They've been out for a couple of years now, when is the next model due?

    • Should be around March 2017. Thats the month when iPad Pro was out

    • It has already landed, they renamed the Air 3 to 9.7 inch iPad Pro.

    • Was rumoured to be this month. I was going to wait, but the price will most likely be much more than $578. Don't think my 9yr old will care about a few new features.

      • Why would a 9yo need an iPad for school ?

        • My 5 yr old has to have one. And they go to a state school.

My 4yr old starts prep next year and they also need one!

        • +5

          @31mop:

          that's sad… :(

        • Our school has them from yr 4 up, I think it's great learning tool. The kids love them. Don't really know why we need iPads though. Samsung would have also been sufficient, probably cheaper too.

        • @lovabargain:

I think it's great learning tool.

Ours get more than enough time with the iPads and laptops in each class, no need to have every kid own one…

        • +2

@lovabargain: probably to limit having software instability issues. Apple apps rarely ever crash, and when they do, they get fixed fast

        • +2

@lovabargain: Having just changed from Samsung to IPads at my school, there is no comparison. iPad apps are much better and encourage higher order thinking. The Samsungs had so many problems, few apps and consumed so much IT tech support time that ate into the budget. It may be good for a private user but in a school setting it fails.

        • mathletics amongst other things.

        • @Emli: as a developer of both platforms but primarily iOS, iOS is so much more straight forward to develop on. On iOS we're not stuck with APIs that should have been deprecated years ago. This isn't possible on Android due to the huge OS version gaps. It's also nice knowing how hardware will behave, on Android some devices have their cameras installed upside down, or 90 degrees offset and being able to handle these cases detracts developers.

There's also the most obvious reason, iOS generates more money than Android. iOS users seem to spend more money on apps, for whatever reason. Even a niche app I developed on iOS has netted me over 1K this year. I'd have never expected it to even make me enough money to cover the developer certificates ($150).

        • @lovabargain: lots of quality iPad apps. Developers know iOS generates more money which is why it's he first platform they develop for and sometimes the only one.

There's also great accessibility functions which are necessary for schools. I'm not sure about Android's accessibility functionality but iOS has very extensive features. I believe Apple implements a lot of accessibility functions as a financial loss because the sheer amount of stuff they have is just insane. Especially considering the small number of people who use them.

Another reason is educational pricing, not to students or teachers but institutions. Apple sells volume discounted products at decent rates. The schools probably onsell at retail prices though.

        • @garage sale: Mathletics is an example of a website that I would leave for home. It would only encourage the argument from parents that they get enough iPad time at home.
Examples of higher level thinking would be
          1. Write a maths story problem. Create a QR code with the answer.
          2. Create a 1 minute video using Explain Everything (or similar) that explains how decimal places are generated or how to convert fractions to decimals. Rather than completing already made sums showing recall, they have to show a higher level of understanding. These are also examples of activities that won't be done at home.

        • @no not me: thanks for your reply. I wish the school had known this before we lost three tears dealing with samsungs, I was on leave when the decision was made but I gather there was a slick sales talk from Samsung. There are so many apps that help students with educational needs that have only been developed on an iPad platform.

        • @no not me: BYOD ( bring your own device) generally works by parents buying the device and being given a list of apps to buy. The school does not onsell anything. The government auditors are very strict on parents only paying what it costs the school for things eg a private company comes in to teach dance, the cost of the lessons cannot be inflated and parents only pay the amount the school is charged).
This may differ from state to state.
Under the private system, my son leases a computer which covers the IT help, apps, printing allowance and the laptop is imaged with the school logo and login. You have no idea of the cost of the individual components.

        • @Emli: glad to hear it's being run properly. Heard a few cases where MacBook Airs were required to be bought from the school but not managed by the school at all, with exception of basic WiFi connection but despite this the price was higher than Apple's offering.

        • @Emli: I don't know if you've considered it at all. But you should absolutely recommend Swift Playrgounds (I'm assuming you work at a school, forgive me if I'm wrong). Even if you just offer the idea, Swift Playgrounds is a great way to learn the very basics of programming in a fun way. Much more interesting than what I learnt when I was young. I doubt many children will be interested in drawing text on screen or reading documentation, as I know I wasn't. Just a recommendation anyway, I've heard great things about the app and I don't think programming is at all a big focus in schools in Australia. When I was taught basic programming as an elective subject it was just outdated stuff and, while I liked it, it was a bit disappointing. Considering there's a decent industry and it'll probably be more useful than certain history subjects among others.

        • @no not me: ooh. Will look into that one, We are currently writing informational texts that when typed up have to have a QR code linked to a website with a video matching the report. One child has decided to create his own website and create a QR code to his own website. STEM and coding are the big pushes so any other ideas are appreciated. The learning curve is unfamiliar for me but I am not afraid.

        • @Emli: definitely give Swift Playgrounds a go. There's also a free Swift manual on iBooks written by Apple. Swift Playgrounds is really more focused on algorithms rather than iOS based coding, so it's more beneficial than Apple simply pushing their own platform. It actually seems like a genuine attempt to get people interested in programming. If you're up for it, CodeAcademy is a great website for learning some of the basics, there are progress frackers and that kind of thing so it's not just a list of random tutorials.

I'd definitely give Swift Playgrounds a go, anyone up for some problem solving should give it a go. After all that's the entire purpose behind algorithms.

Really glad to hear that coding a is a big push. Keep up the great work!

      • we use the trickle down effect …… i get the latest and mine trickles to my 9 year old…… worked fine but a few things now need at least ipad air gen1, so i need to upgrade and he gets my ipad air gen 1 as trickle down.

Yeah I expect it be just a headphone jackless iPad with upgraded chip and that's it.

I expect it to have the first holographic screen.

600$+ for a tablet from 2014, is still a bit steep I reckon, they really should have dropped the price further. (just to be clear, it is a fantastic tablet, but 2 years on, you should either be given better specs, or a much better price)

It's pretty interesting how apple has really lengthened the release cycles for most of their product lines, MacBook Pro refresh took absolutely forever, Macbook Air hasnt been updated since early 2015, The Mac Pro is from 2013 (Seriously!!) and is still on sale. Even iPhone, which is still yearly, has become much more incremental in updates.

They have more than enough cash to retool/redesign, they have high margin products that mean it would be easy to do, but they don't need to because consumers just dont care, their brands are that powerful, that they dont need to compete by being up to date. Apple are just walking it in.

I believe one day they will exhaust their goodwill.

    • That reminds of the Nokia on its old day.

    • +1

it's all about software ….. so it's not new hardware people want its longevity of updates. i'd rather few hardware updates and longer software support. android is terrible ….. 2 updates if lucky and then end of support.

  • How does 5% Price Beat at Officeworks actually work? Is it only if Office works is more expensive or even if they are the same price?

Last time I went to Officeworks Glen Waverley they told me they don't price beat if it's the same price in their store.. so I'm not too entirely sure.

    • They usually drop their prices quickly to prevent the matching so id say thats what happened in your example.

      Gotta be quick with em.

      • OW hasnt price dorp yet since it is the weekend.
But the ipad in myer needs to be in stock, call OW now to order and pick up in stock later / refund.
