Chair for Breast Feeding

Hi

I'm on the lookout for a chair for my wife for breastfeeding.

I looked at baby stores and they are so $$, and not sure of their use in the future. I have talked to a few people and they said you can just use normal chairs (comfy one).

Can anyone direct me to their recommended type? i.e should i get ikea type armchairs? laz-y boys?

Thanks in advance

EDIT: Thanks everyone, this is great feedback and leaning me to get her to sit on the sofa instead. Having said that, I dont have any chairs upstairs for her so I will need any comfy chair? (for night feeds mainly and I want to sleep!)

  • The glider chairs are great https://www.babybunting.com.au/valco-baby-eurobell-glider-sa…. You're right they're expensive so I found mine on Gumtree for $150.

I didn't know breastfeeding chairs were a thing. My wife is breastfeeding now and sits on our couch with a pillow under baby….

What does a breastfeeding chair do differently?

What does a breastfeeding chair do differently?

They have an attachment to the chair like a bucket that you can place the baby in so you can keep two arms free :D

Some friends really liked the Poang rocking chair: http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/S49181358/

    • Beat me to it!

    • We've bought the same chair, happy with the purchase!

  • Not worth buying new. Something you will use for maybe 2-3 years before they get sold on ebay or gumtree.

    • A breast feeding 3 year old ?!?!?!?!

  • We purchased a chair like this from IKEA.. http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/S39181311/#/S8909…

    • My wife did too, but three kids and it didn't get used at all. I think most mums just feed on the couch or in bed at night.

I used a normal POANG chair and found it (in combination with a footrest) really comfortable for breastfeeding

Don't buy it, but if you must, get it second hand. It's just another gimmick item that has a short use life span

Just get her a breastfeeding pillow or wedge instead (can get a piece of foam from Clark rubber cut to size). I sat on the sofa or the bed. When i was out, i'd just take my BF pillow with me and fed in the car.
You're better off buying some back support cushions for her instead of the chair

I worked in retail and my job is to do exactly just that, promote baby consumerism.

I rub my hands in glee whenever a pregnant woman walks in cos' I know they are great customers. You have a baby? When is it due? That's great! Now, let's talk about this $599 nursing chair and $999 dollar nursing table! You'll be a terrible mum if you don't buy those…

Secondhand glider chair, no need for a new one. That said, if you're co-sleeping, or end up co-sleeping, a separate chair in the baby's room is gonna be pointless

    • +1

What if the secondhand one comes with some milk stains?

      • +2

Most are leather or vinyl, I'd be amazed if there was a liquid stain…

        • Good information for the OP… go for a secondhand leather non-visible milk stain breastfeeding chair

          ; )

father of 3 here. - I asked mrs altomic if she wanted one when our first was born and she looked at me like I was an idiot "why the hell do we need a 'special chair' to do something that has been occurring naturally for millions of generations of humans and their ancestors?"

      She's a keeper ;)

wolfenator87- it would be bad form to ditch her after she just gave birth.

        • What if she said it's her or eneloops?

        • @fruit:

If she knew you well enough she wouldn't dare ask.

  • We use a normal chair but have something similar to this which the missus always uses and saves her arms and back, baby just lies down on side and you don't really have to hold it. Google "breastfeeding foam support" to see more options

I personally found the poang chair from ikea quite hard to get into and out of while holding a baby as it was too low. It took me until child #2 to find the right chair which for me was a high back very well padded office chair. The arms of the chair made it easier to get up after a c-section, and the height meant I could put her into the bassinet from above then have both hands free to lift myself out of the chair when finished. Once more physically fit feeding can be done anywhere, usually couch or bed, but pillows or wedges are good for back and neck strain especially as the baby gets heavier

If there is one tip I would give first time parents, it's not to buy anything until you actually know you need it and the item in question would address a real need. In other words, try to make do with what you already have in the house and only go shopping when you know that you need something to solve a particular problem.

It's very easy to get suckered into buying loads of stuff before the first baby is born and you can fill your house with lots of expensive gear that will only get in the way or complicate your life by having too much stuff to clean. Most of this stuff does not have much resale value and quite often friends will just hand you down things they'll never need again.

For breast feeding, a couch or lounge chair with high armrests, plus a boomerang pillow will be more than adequate. You don't want a low seat because that will make it difficult to stand up while holding the baby. That's probably a bigger issue for mothers that had c-section.

    Everyone is different.
two things to consider Mum and Bub.
Both may want to sleep/doze afterwards - during - instead of.

Therefor get what works for you and also allow the biggest range of options, like ease to get in and out, no baby drop off when drop off, cuddle comfort room for Mums, also little pleasures on the side out of striking, kicking, head butting range [had one of these little b baby] = [lace for cuppa tea from Dad [ you feeding baby I will feed you] {{really saying as I got you a cuppa and you are now refreshed and so you can change baby}}} no don't hit me.

Good luck and NOTE if you blink they will be going to school, blink again dating,.

One of best tips we had given to us was, start cooking double meal lots, and freeze one set. Save on cooking, money on processed food, and beats I am too F…… tired to ……. cook, prepare food or go shopping.

    • In a similar vein, one of the best presents we got for the newborn was a voucher for Dinner Ladies. Ended up with about a weeks worth of decent meals exactly at the time where we needed it.

Much better present than packs of bibs or size 0000 suits with cute slogans.

Why can't you use a regular milk crate for breast feeding?
If you need a bit of luxury put a pillow underneath it.

  • We bought a rocker/recliner Lazyboy chair. Wife loved it and was very happy with it. Now that it is no longer used for that purpose, it has been moved to my office :-)
