Whole Wheat Flour 10kg for $5.45 at Coles Online (Australia Wide)

660

I picked up a bargain on Whole Wheat Flour, under 46c a kilo at Coles! We tried it this morning by making some yummy pancakes. I usually don't like to eat pancakes because they feel heavy in my stomach, but these ones didn't make me feel bloated. They were just as nice as regular pancakes.

If you want to know a bit about benefits of whole wheat flour (other than the cheaper price), have a quick look here. You will need to find a special recipe for whole wheat because it's slightly different to processed wheat.

I wasn't able to work out which stores had the stuff by looking online, but Coles friendly staff gave me this list,

Location Location Name State
418 CS ALICE SPRINGS CS SA
404 CS CASUARINA CS SA
406 CS KURRALTA PARK CS SA
471 CS NORTHPARK CS SA
4947 CS CASUARINA CS SA
4972 CS CHURCHILL CENTRE CS SA
4945 CS ANZAC HIGHWAY CS SA

I called 1800 061 562 and asked for help tracking this stuff down. Coles online (keypad option 3) said they had no idea and suggested I speak with the support centre (keypad option 4). They provided me with the list for South Australia. Thankfully, I didn't have to waste petrol by travelling too far.

How big is a serving ?

  • No stocks in Canberra :(

Turnbull is responsible for this. Coalition will have to answer to this in the parliament.

Is this on the shelf with the other flour or in the Indian section?

  • Thanks op.

  • +4

Note that whole grain flour spoils much faster that white flour as it contains the germ and bran of the grain, instead of just the endosperm. Some sites suggest storing it in the freezer to prolong shelf life.

Does this have a best before date?

I'm not eating something that has any some of sperm in it 😒

        Your boyfriend will be disappointed…

    • +2

It's whole 'wheat' not 'grain' and doesn't have the germ so doesn't spoil any faster than any other whole wheat flour.

    • That's true for proper real wholemeal flour.
But most of the so called wholemeal flour supermarkets sell, is just white flour with some bran added back in.
It says so on the packet.
So doesn't spoil any faster, because the germ is what goes rancid quickly.
Hopefully this Atta flour is the real wholemeal flour.

Good price for 10KG Atta (flour). Usually from other brands Indian grocery shops will sell between 8.50$ to 10:00$

:( Cannot find it in any close by stores.

    • How many chapatti's in 10kg of atta?

      • +1

        100+

      • +1

        150

      • +1

I'd say around 350 for avg sized chapati..

        • +4

I make chapati whenever I can be bothered, it's so good. I guess mine would be called roti as I cook with oil on the frying pan, but sometimes use the pan without oil followed by a finish on the oven top flame. I think for 150g you get about 4 or 5 chapati's so you're about right.

Travelled to India 6 years back and really enjoyed the food over there, came back and bought a stone board and rolling pin.

Would be awesome to build a tandoori oven where you stick the naan bread dough to the side and let it cook. Naan bread is great

Spicy hot indian food + beer = lifes great pleasures

@johndemonik: building tandoor is in the plan!!

        • @johndemonik:

guess mine would be called roti as I cook with oil on the frying pan

          That would be a parantha

        • @johndemonik: Clay Pot / Tandoor will be a nice to have thing. One of my friend's mum used to cook those Potato stuffed Naan's with Atta. They are delicious specially with the Chick Pea Curry!

        • @johndemonik:

Keep us posted if that tandoor idea ever advances, would love to see a DIY tandoor project in execution.

        • @batrarobin:

If someone want to buy small clay Tandoor for home, here is a company that imports those. I have seen people using those at home.

Disappointing that Coles Support Centre seem to think that Casuarina and Alice Springs are in South Australia rather than Northern Territory.

    • +3

Not too bad I would say. Considering most call centers are overseas, they still manage to get the right country.

  • +1

Cannot stock up this as it goes rancid really quick.

    • +2

I was interested until I looked it up "Whole-wheat flour has a shorter shelf life than white flour, as the higher oil content leads to rancidification if not stored properly, such as with refrigeration, or in other cool areas"

unless you will use 10 kilos fast probably best to not bother.

  • +1

I have kept 10kg for over a year in a normal kitchen pantry. The dough loses some elasticity when made up compared to a freshly opened bag and doesn't roll out as easily but definitely tasted the same. The other great use for this flour is in a bread maker (50:50 with strong bread flour)

Op you might want to get tested for coeliac if wheat makes you feel bloated

    • +1

If he was celiac he would be in agonizing pain after eating gluten, not just bloated

      • +1

not necessarily - lots of ppl have coeliac disease without knowing it (or at least gluten sensitivity)

        • +1

and lots of people are hipster (profanity) with made up gluten sensitivities to justify their supreme knowledge of nutrition from the internet

          they're also vegan.

        • @insular: Around 2% of Australians are gluten intolerant, but the growth of the 'carbs are bad' movement and the rapid growth in Gluten Free products (to achieve a halo effect) is pushing far more people to believe they need the products.

Judging by what I hear at work and BBQs whenever food is served, it seems to be cool and a badge of honour to loudly proclaim your allergies and intolerances to anyone not listening. 'I can't eat dairy!' 'I'm allergic to nuts!' 'Gluten makes me incredibly bloated!' I feel left out as I have nothing to declare.

Actually you do. Yell out, "I'm not a gullible fool!"
