How Do I Get Internet for My Home without a Landline?

I'm moving out and looking to get internet and Wifi connected at my new place. However, I don't want a landline as I don't want to pay line rental and I only ever use my mobile anyway.

I'm aware of something called naked DSL but when I tried to sign up for it online, I was required to input a landline number. I was unable to get to the next sign up step without it.

I thought the whole point of naked DSL was that I wouldn't need a home phone connection, so maybe I was wrong?

If anyone could enlighten me that would be greatly appreciated!

  • Naked ADSL still requires that there was an active phone line there at some point - that's why they'll ask for the phone line number. If there wasn't a phone line the install fee will be excessive

There's also naked cable but again you'll need a cable line (Telstra or Optus) into the house.

Your best bet might actually be vivid wireless unlimited which uses wireless technology but ensure you've got good coverage at your residence using their maps first.

Thanks for that suggestion. I'm looking into Vivid wireless and it seems like a good option for my situation.

  • Get cheap android, sign up for post paid with unlimited internet (or the highest gigabyte your wallet allows), setup as Wifi hotspot. Throw in some Wifi enchancer if signal isn't good.

Is there such thing as an unlimited mobile data plan?

Telstra wireless broadband, you can get like 200mb pm for 10$ if bundle with mob , it's unlimited, just shaped at 56kb after your 200 MB :p

    • Thanks for the suggestion. What would be the advantage of setting up a wifi hotspot as opposed to a wireless connection like Vividwireless?

The physical infrastructure should be there already

iinet just need your address to check availability

    • The problem is they also said I needed to put down a landline number despite availability of the service at my address.

  • I was in the same situation when I moved. Without having a previous land line to the house, the best bet is vivid wireless. You'll need to get their modem which is about $200, might be able to find it cheaper. They have unlimited for $90/month.

Plus the install cost of the roof mounted antenna.

    • hmm… compared to unlimited naked ADSL for around $60 with line rental.

I have Telstra budget line rental at $27 a month, plus $30 a month unlimited TPG ADSL2+.

      • compared to unlimited naked ADSL internet connection that hardly works for around $60 with line rental. Unlimited almost nothing is a pretty bad deal …

    • Thanks for the suggestion. I'm thinking of going with vividwireless. $90 seems a bit steep for internet only but I probably won't need an unlimited plan!

  • NBN or "NBN" or naked ADSL

Naked DSL isn't worth it anymore.

It used to be cheaper, but bundles have dropped in price.

I have a TPG phone and internet bundle for $60 a month (unlimited data). I have never even plugged a phone in, but the bundle was cheaper.

Also, naked takes 2 or 3 weeks to set up.

    • Yes it's cheaper to get a bundle with a landline. You don't even have to use the landline though.

  • Hi Mate,

Was in same boat and gave a shot to belong… No cost for installation of landline and they told me there would be any costs involved they would update me get my written consent / email confirmation bed re starting work.

On the ozbargainer spirit I'd you are going for them give it a try by going through cashrewards.com.au I got a $100 cash back.

    All the best mate.

  • I'm currently in a new place waiting for TPG to wait for Telstra to pull a line so I can get ADSL

Meantime I'm using the $5 first month Kogan deal as a hotspot
