    Can we cancel after first month?

    • +4

      Yes, just port your number out or don't recharge. It's a prepaid service.

      • +5

        In that case we can keep porting away to difference providers when they are on special ….

        • +20

          Yes that's what I've been doing since Feb this year. It's very fun personally.

        • +7

          @Hogg: me too, except when your number gets stuck (woolies are pretty bad with this). for extra safety, dont port within an operator eg. woolies to aldi is still telstra. but overall, have found woolies porting terrible. service good. Yomojo is pretty good value at the moment- with 2 free months

        • +2

          @aryan12:
          While Woolies and Aldi use the same carrier, they are NOT the same operator.
          That means, Woolies will not know where they are porting to and Aldi will not see who the number was with before them.
          Telstra will know though, they are the ones actually performing the port.

        • +15

          @FatBlanket:
          Not sure why all the neggs.
          But you make a good point.

          Your time is valuable too.

          I personally need a phone available 7/365 so porting constantly is not an option for me. I can't risk a day of missed calls every month just to shave a couple dollars, it makes no cents.

        • @aryan12:yep they really Wyatt's locking numbers now. It s annoying and they do it to make it as hard as possible for porters.

        • @aryan12: Well done for the heads up for Yomojo - just signed up

        • @FatBlanket: You're on the wrong website m8

        • +3

          @Hogg: I've been doing it since late last year. Now personally I've never thought of it as fun, but the savings is fun!

        • @bonezAU: pretty sure there's enough room on ozbargain for those with jobs and those without.

        • +3

          @Wystri Warrick: Yeah savings are massive! I've averaged around $12 per month this year with all the promos

        • +1

          @Kangal:

          That's what dual sim phones are for. If one sim is on Telstra you can keep your main sim topped up with credit 2me as for vodaphone you can set message bank to call back and it won't cost you a cent to retrieve your voicemail. So even with no credit you can still access voicemail

        • @R4: haha crap. Should've provided my referral for $20each

        • +2

          @Hogg: best part about this is the more of us who constantly churn, the more specials will keep coming out as the carriers/MVNOs fight to "win" customers.

          I was on a 3 month Groupon before, now on a $0 Woolworths SIM, about to migrate to Exetel 6 month 50% off deal (bit of a speed hump there :).

        • +1

          @goosmurf:

          Boo yeah. I can feel the fun I'm your reply already.

          I'm actually a bit disappointed that I'm sorted for 3 months with the yomojo deal.

          I'm missing out on this sweet sweet deal.

        • +2

          @Hogg: I'm sorted for the next 10 months 5 Woolworths $30 for $2ea, and 5 Optus $30 $10ea.

        • @goosmurf: I was going to go for the Exatel deal, but it's not capped could wind up with an excess bill. I'll probably take this one instead.

        • +1

          @Wystri Warrick:

          Your woolies one sounds like an awesome bargain!

          I bought 13 Optus for $10 as well. Sorted for a year as long as the Sims work. I am a bit concerned due to reports from the Coles thread about Optus Sims not working.

        • Did anyone else get a PM from @beannnie10? I replied to a couple of questions without realising the account was made 3 days ago with 0 posts or comments.

          Sounds like I might have been duped into answering some marketing survey?

        • @Hogg: yeah I read the Coles thread to. Another reason why I'm thinking of not taking the Exatel offer up, and use the Optus ones first.

        • @Hogg:

          Turns out it's a PR person. I have been ask to do a 15min chat about plan hopping.

          Any reason I shouldn't? Could getting too much publicity for plan hoping cause telcos to clamp down?

        • +1

          @Wystri Warrick

          FYI, call up Optus then visit a store if one of the Sims don't work. Happened to my aunt and apparently the Optus store fixed it up easily.

        • +1

          @Wystri Warrick:
          Apparently with Exetel you can set spend limits, which can be set to $0 even, so no bill shock.

          @Hogg:
          What will u get out of doing it? They planning to pay or bribe you somehow? ;p

        • @4KGrubby:

          Probably get nothing lol but I enjoy telling anyone I can about getting phone bargains.

          Everyone I know is either doing it as well now or probably sick of my stories about how I got a bargain.

        • @4KGrubby: Thanks mate

        • @Hogg: Thanks mate

        • +3

          @Hogg: I can't see them clamping down.

          It would require one or both of the following:

          1. Everyone to agree not to discount; this will never happen. There will always be at least one carrier/MVNO who thinks they can win customers by running a promotion.

          2. Carriers/MVNOs to limit portability in some way. e.g. if you were a customer 3 months ago, coming back in on a new SIM you are deemed an existing customer and ineligible for promotional price.

          The latter seems more possible but IMHO unlikely due to there being so many carriers/MVNOs, and they are largely driven by short term (quarterly) financial goals. They don't think much about long term.

          Termination fees are a possibility too but customers won't tolerate that (i.e. it would work against their promotional pricing).

          If I was talking to a PR person my message would be that the customers actually want a stable plan; unfortunately they're just not getting the value they want.

          e.g. 4 years ago you could get a $11/mo plan with 1.5GB of data and $650 of included value. Now the same thing is $18/mo. This is despite the transition from 3G to 4G, i.e. greater availability of bandwidth. How on earth did prices go up?

          Rhetorical question as I'm well aware that the underlying carriers have been trying to raise ARPU for years, to sweat their capex as much as they can before the next round of capex (5G around 2020).

          What might be interesting is some sort of loyalty discount. e.g. after each month of service you get a $1/mo discount, capped at say $5-10/mo. So it takes 6 months to max out your cap but you then have a life time discount.

          Instead the current market forces encourage the exact opposite - new customers always get a better deal.

        • +2

          @goosmurf:

          You seem to have some expertise in this area.

          You also bring up a good point. It is not that I want to keep porting each month, I am just a rational consumer. The current market incentivises disloyalty.

        • @MrTweek:
          So I can port from Vodafone to Kogan without any problems?

        • @dan76n:
          Yes definitely.
          You can always port from anywhere to anywhere. All providers have a legal obligation to process ports within a certain time frame.
          They can still (profanity) it up due to incompetence of course, but since they can get hefty fines for that, they will try hard to rectify any problems caused by failed ports.

        • @FatBlanket: no one will handed you iphone 7 for free without you need to work a little bit.

        • +2

          @Hogg: it's something I find interesting from two angles.

          One is that I'm a small fry investor who focuses on telco.

          The other is from a business strategy/management POV. It seems like telcos are driven by individuals who don't particularly care about the long term. Do whatever it takes to grow customers (and ideally ARPU) in the short term, don't worry about what happens beyond the next 12 months.

          Partly I think it's related to the short tenure of employees nowadays. You can be a hero by growing customers for 12 months then go find another job (perhaps at a competitor, showing them how you grew customers at your previous employer).

          I guess the two interests are linked — you don't want to invest in businesses who exhibit unusually high levels of short term thinking. And as a consumer I benefit most from companies who wish to piss away their futures. :D

          Getting off on a tangent now but I suspect there may be an inverse relationship between the financial health of businesses and the frequency of their appearance on OzBargain.

          Prime examples being Dick Smith, SurfStitch, Masters, and even eBay (who seem to be chucking more and more marketing dollars at the regular 20% off promotions).

        • +1

          @goosmurf:

          That's a really interesting point re the inverse relationship. Something I will keep an eye on out of curiosity.

          The short-termism reminds me of Australian politics.

        • +1

          @Hogg: I uploaded this for another OzB thread but thought you might enjoy it. :)

        • @goosmurf:

          That is a lovely sight my friend.

          I have a similar pile at home.

          I don't actually know how I will use the $10 for $1 sims. Worried that they'll go unused because I have enough $30 sims for a year.

        • @Hogg: Hahaha :)

          I'm planning to activate those on the My Daily Plus plan ($2 for unlimited calls/500MB for one day, max of $4 for 1GB in a day) and use it when I'm working remotely / on holidays.

          It's perfect when you need a bit of extra data coz the SIM otherwise lasts 180 days so you can just chuck it in a Wi-Fi modem or old smartphone and keep it in your backpack/car ready to use.

  • Can you buy this in a shop today? Need to get a sim today (to use for about a week) whilst i wait for vaya in the mail and will port the number. Was thinking Aldi $15 deal?? Any better ideas?

    • +1

      Vodafone Starter Packs are half price this week at Woolies.

      • Thanks do they have a $10 or $20 starter pack?? Looks like cheapest aldi starter is $15 load with a $5 sim. Only need it for a week so the cheaper the better. Just need a little allowance for phone calls and data for some emails/web browsing. Shame Kogan doesnt sell in stores.

        • +1

          That's correct. For $15 you get 120 minutes and 2.5GB (I think). No need to do the $15 and $5 load like Aldi.

          Or you could try and get a $10 Optus starter kit.

        • +10

          Telstra $10 packs for $5 at 7eleven. 100 mins calls and unlim text plus 1G data for 14 days expiry.

        • @ya488o: exactly what i need thanks mate!

        • @ya488o: can you confirm this deal is still active?? Ozbargain post says expired yesterday.

        • don't bother.. vaya sim arrives next day if you signed up before 12pm day before

          ***EDIT actually sorry depends what state you are in.. eastern states are generally a day as vaya is in brisbane.

        • +1

          @nubzy: Ah sorry didn't know they expired already. I bought it 2 days ago. Maybe check in store? Alternatively there's $10 coles prepaid unlim calls text 1G for 10 days.

        • @RB260483: need it today, and Vaya won't get it until Monday-Tuesday at the earliest. Will just buy Telstra for $5-$10 and use up the credit over 14 days before completing the port to Vaya.

        • @nubzy: may as well get an optus based sim.. your port will take 30mins when you get your new sim.

        • @ya488o: still running :) thanks for the headsup

        • @nubzy: Just got one now mate….Its still on!

    • +2

      Which city are you in? If you are in Brisbane, I'll give you a SIM

    • +1

      An ALDI sim is $5 in store, and you don't need to go on a plan. PAYG will use the $5 of included credit with the SIM.

      I think this makes ALDI the best value when it comes to "getting" a mobile phone number.

  • when we have to activate it by??

    • +1

      Activate/recharge by 11.59pm 14 Nov

  • Nice, good for some extra data :)

  • What if you buy now and activate/port after 14th November?

    • The SIM starter pack is free, but you still need to activate/recharge by 14 Nov

      • Understood. But what if i activate post 14th Nov?

        • +1

          Recharging and activation tend to happen together for prepaid plans.

        • +5

          If you activate after 14th Nov, you won't have the option to choose $4.90 deal

      • -1

        Can you receive calls on the free SIM without recharging?

        • +1

          My friend setup a free Kogan one a few months ago for just that purpose, she's had no problem taking calls, hasn't charged up once.

  • Do they have a minimum for recharge?

    • +1

      You just pay for the plan ($4.90), and it expires at the end of 30 days. No balance kept.

  • Nice one for travellers?

    • +3

      Not overseas.

      Quote from their site "Kogan Mobile does not currently offer International Roaming services, because let’s be honest - you'll be able to get much better value for money by purchasing a calling card in the country you're visiting, as roaming costs can sometimes be very nasty!"

      • +6

        Oh ok. I meant the other way around, if you were just in Australia for a month it would be perfect.

        • +4

          I keep telling short-term backpackers about these deals and they all seem to have locked phones they don't wish to unlock. The worst part is that Australian hostels are the most backwards in the world and rarely give you more than an hour of "complimentary WiFi" if you're lucky.

  • How the heck can we activate it by midnight if we get the sim in 1-2 business days?
    My Dumb: I thought October 14

    • +2

      November

    • Exactly what I think as well until I realize it 11 NOT 10.
      Tricky as it have the same date 14

  • How do you pay? It comes up as $0.00 at checkout

    • +2

      Yes, you buy the sim first which is free. Then when you get it you have to activate the sim, therefore paying for the recharge.

      • Do you know if they accept paypal when activating the SIM?

        • +1

          Nope, only Amex, Visa and Debit card as far as I know

        • +1

          @stuhtb:
          Cool. I hope they don't automatically charge the card again after 25 days when porting out elsewhere. I'll find out soon :)

          Cheers

        • +4

          @bm:

          Make sure auto recharge is off.

        • @Ozzapo:

          Will do
          Cheers

        • @Ozzapo:

          So they kept the CC information unlike Coles you pay every 28 days.

        • @superforever:

          You can choose to recharge manually or save your card for auto recharge.

        • @stuhtb:

          No mastercard?

  • Good deal I reckon.

  • -2

    Is $10 changing to and back to/from your regular prepaid provider worth your time?

    • +2

      No, but I'd say $45 would be.

    • +2

      When you sit on the train for 30 minutes a day, it sure is.

    • $10 for what?

      • -1

        I pay $15 for my prepaid

        • +1

          You get 12Gb data for $15 ?

        • @Tiggrrrrr: I get 2GB

          The only people who would conceivably need 12Gb are people who don't have internet at home… I commute every day and still don't get through 2GB even while streaming music.

        • +1

          @phobaphobic: I have unlimited data at home. And I use up to 9Gb data a month on my mobile.

        • @Tiggrrrrr: That's a lot of porn, mate :p

  • Can I get one and Mrs. TT also? Fairly cheap data which helps.

    • +1

      You can as long as the Kogan account is under different email address.

  • +2

    Can we buy multiple sims? I.e. buy 2, activate one now, and one on Nov 14th? Or is that considered "not a new customer"?

    • Limit 1 per customer

      • Cheers

      • it says 2 per customer :) at 1:15
