Anybody knows if there is any demo of PSVR in Perth?

    • +1

Yeh I would love to know if any in brisbane.. would love to have a test out

Wonder if VR will take off or fade like 3D?

    • I have a really hard time believing it'll become mainstream.

      • +3

It really doesn't bother me if the mainstream never adopts it. Just like steering wheels for racing games aren't necessary, I can't imagine playing a good racer without one, likewise specific niche games with a VR headset will be the same for me.

      • +2

We're basically at the pre-alpha stage of VR. The potential is virtually unbounded, it's highly unlikely that it won't be mainstream in 10 years

        • I just can't see people strapping on a headset and isolating themselves as a standard way to play. I also doubt they'll get substantially cheaper either.

        • +1

@ProspectiveDarkness: I've been playing a lot of HTC vive and generally i play it with other friends around. It's no different than passing a controller. Also the tv/pc monitor displays what the person in the headset is seeing as well so others can see, this doesn't change with PSVR where the TV displays what the player is seeing.

My perspective is that its an amazing market that offers some truly unique experiences but its still in its infancy. Whilst there are some excellent experiences to be had with the current crop of titles, there isn't anything that is an equivalent to a big budget blockbuster title at this stage. These games won't arrive for at least another year or two.

I'm tipping in 3 years the next generation of console will most likely come packed with a VR kit in the box and will be sold at the current price of a VR kit alone. Then we will see the true VR generation.

          @ProspectiveDarkness:
"I think there is a world market for maybe five computers."

        • @McFly:

Okay buddy. All I'm saying is, I highly doubt it's going to make it's way into every living room like some VR proponents seem to expect. More like what plmko says above.

        • @ProspectiveDarkness: as I say come back in 10 years. There is the potential for direct mind interface for control think eeg not something invasive, tactile suits for physical feedback and scent replication, obviously much better visuals/screens. This may sound like a fairy tale, but proof of concept examples already exist for all of the above. Why catch up with a friend over coffee when you can hang out in a simulated space of anything you can imagine, not just what is physically possible, ultimately this goes far beyond gaming.
But obviously at this stage the inconvenience of the tech doesn't really balance with what extra is offers so I can understand the scepticism from many

          @ProspectiveDarkness:
VR headsets could not cost too much to make. Think about the ones for phones, like $10, and add an LCD maybe $20 and gyroscope functions etc. It looks like they are pumping these out cheaply, basically printing money and laughing all the way to the bank. I think it's interesting this new VR set is compared with others on affordability. Just look at what this is made of folks.

    • you mean like "Move" stick ?

    • +3

As someone who owns a Vive I believe It'll become mainstream in the next 5-10 years. This will allow for production and R&D costs to reduce, good games to be made and GPU and processing power in general to increase to a level where at least 4K per eye resolution is supported and possibly even a wireless solution that can connect to a PC.

If people want to see it grow into something special they will need to adopt and support the industry for it to grow even if it means buying a PSVR. It may not match the specs of the Vive but it's a good step for getting the adoption rate up and getting good games built. What is nice about the way they work is that they are easy to port games across systems. The adoption costs are high for new technologies like this but as these costs decrease, I believe it will take off.

I will wait for the wireless VR to come out which is rumored at this stage.

Current PS VR will require a HDMI cable to be plugged into it.

    • +5

I'm not a tech nerd but I believe the wireless VR won't be available any time soon until at least three years later

The visual requires too much bandwidth. That's why PS VR headset connects to the console via two HDMI cables. I don't think the wireless technology will improve so soon that you can get rid of the cables and still play VR smoothly.

      • +1

I think wireless vr will come when the ps4 is in the headset… kinda like the Samsung solution…once they can put all the processing power in the headset without the weight then you don't need the external unit and no need for wireless anything (except WiFi/Internet)

But i have to say I'm loving the first"real" iteration of vr so far and i think it will evolve and improve exponentially from now on…

        • wake me in 20 years

  • Can anyone confirm Driveclub at $44? I want to pick that up with my JB preorder this afternoon.

    • Play the demo before buying the full game, the graphics are pretty terrible and it seems to be making a fair few people feel sick.

  • +6

Price matched EB last night at midnight launch. My store were fantastic and didn't put me Brough the ringer even though target obviously wasn't open. Here are some of my thoughts on games if anyone is on the fence about what to pick up:

I've played around 4hrs worth of PS VR now and will just give a quick summary of the games/demos I've played.

    Must buys:

Rez - seriously awesome fun. Amazing sound track and feels like you are inside a tronesque world. Get a real feeling of flying. My favourite game so far.

Tumble VR - simple but a hell of a lot of fun. Move works perfectly for this. Really immersive for such a simple game and looks great.

Thumper - intense, i get sweats playing this game lol. But another awesome sound track and very technical game for such simple controls.

    Good:

Battlezone - reslly immersive and the best overall proper game experience IMO. Looks great, sounds great, Ai is indeed pretty dumb. Multiplayer should make this more fun.

Rigs - need to play more but I've enjoyed it so far. Felt a little queasy but got over it. A little blurry but a nice look to the game.

    Ok:

Eve - it's good but really going to get old quickly. Low resolution but still looks nice. No way is this game worth the price they are asking. I'm glad I got it for $27 from an Amazon pricing error.

    Bad:

Driveclub - hated it. Terrible graphics, blurry as hell and most of all it made me feel so sick. Have already returned it, enough said.

Also tried the descent demo which was pretty awesome. But also confirmed to me that worlds wouldn't be worthwhile. It seems like it would have a couple of cool experiences that you literally would never touch again after trying once. Other than to maybe show friends.

That's all the games I've tried so far. Will update once I buy more or try more demos.

Give the Resident Evil Kitchen demo a try. Freaked me out! Horror games are going to be great in VR, not sure if i'll be able to handle them though..

      • Cant wait till a HD Sim Life on PS4 without masking… hehe

    • have to say… once you get over the non FHD graphics of Drive Club…. playing a racing sim in VR is so much better than just on the TV…. i seem to be able to judge the speed and turns a lot better then i can when it's a flat screen….

    • +1

      Hey dwhes,

Thanks for the suggestions, definitely going to give Rez, Tumble VR, and Thumper a go.

In terms of getting my hands on a copy, are they only available on the PS Store?

Can't seem to find them physically at any store.

      Thanks

      • You're welcome! Yep only digital mate for those titles mate.

  • After 2 hours of playing, I felt quite dizzy.

And so many software updates!!! So many cables to connect everything!!!

Sort of regretted already. It's hard to keep the headset in exact place to keep the visual crispy unless I don't move my head.

    • the cables is the only thing that is annoying me so far… apart from that the PSVR have been great… not sure if you've tried out the Cardboard or Gear VR…. I'm getting dizzy from the PSVR but no wear near as much as those other VR solution (obviously i'm not comparing to the vive and rift)…..

i really just want to get into a meaty FPS but they are also the one that are more likely to cause people to be sick…. :)

    • Agreed. Not totally bad. But I expected more. The Vive experience is better.
