Do You Base Your Renovation Ideas on The Block?

We've been keeping an eye on The Block room reveals to see what they use in their bathrooms, and we're curious to know if you base your renovation choices - bathroom or general- on what you see on The Block?

If you do or don't, what do you look for and why?

We have to hand it to Will and Karlie though. Their bathrooms look schmicko!

    Free market research?

    • Curiosity more than anything. We're not going to base business decisions on a few forum posts.

Prime example of things being used on the block, but aren't very popular is the gold sink that was used in the winning laundry this week. We had a deal posted for this a few weeks back that wasn't popular, yet things like that which are a bit different are used all the time in these shows.

The gold coloured tapware is another example. It looks nice, and is pretty unique, but they don't sell well.

      • Haha, you'll have to try repeating the post. That will show if the Block has an effect on peoples decisions.

No. The Block contestants are usually terrible designers.

Shows like Grand Designs and the UK shows where they build homes for <$100k often have creative ideas that are worth copying.

  • I used some of their ideas for inspiration when I last renovated but they are mostly too impractical or costly.

The gold taps/sinks look great on TV, but when it comes to spending your own money on your own home renovation, i wouldn't buy something that is just a fashion trend. It's very risky, unless you have oodles of money and a really fashionable designer home.

    • This. All of that fancy gold or black tapware is going to look incredibly dated not long from now when the trend has passed.

Have a think about old bathrooms you've seen. The ones that don't date much are fairly bland, white walls/tiles, chrome tapware etc, but how horried do those trendy 70's bathrooms look now?

      • Haha, they are pretty epic to see in real life.

The Black tapware is VERY popular at present. With the right tile selection, and appropriate basin and vanity choices, it will still look nice in future.

Obviously, individual tastes will vary, so that's why the industry has so many options. There are still plenty of 'colonial' styles that are very popular, especially in older Victoria-era or Queenslander homes.

I swear they're taking things from my Pinterest. Maybe I need to team up and apply for next year.

Sounds like we should be checking out your Pinterest instead!

  • Their priority is to make ratings - not great renovations - so, No.

  • LMAO

I do. I watch the program religiously and study every single detail. Then I make sure I don't do it.

  • oh jesus, no, (profanity) no.

  • No. They are impractical and expensive.

I think normal people look for something practical, durable and with reasonable price.

    Gold coated tapware is crazy.

Absolutely not. Don't even watch the show. Shoddily built on tight deadlines for show only .. not practical at all.

We just did our bathroom. I was l Iooking at mirrors and they were directly on top of the vanity units.in tbd show room - no splash area between. Why? 'Cos it looks good. I believe The Block contestants often do this too. Practically, it's stupid - - cleaning nightmare and will never look good when actually used due to splashes especially from teeth cleaning. That salesperson actually said, you would never place your mirror like that and why though I could see immediately why not.

Keep your showroom/products real and your products based on what will sell, not fads.
