I'm not experienced with Android Wear, but I thought being an open system you could use any fitness app you'd like? Will be using with my Nexus 6P - is that software only bundled with Sony phones?

      • -4

As far as I'm aware, yes that is the default fitness app which is bundled with most sony phones. It is also available on the play store (no app store/windows support).

        • So you have the option to use others - your comment implies not to buy this because of sony phone software - doesn't seem fair to imply that when you can use any other fitness app.

        • +6

          @0p:
Firstly, thats not a fair comparison. Out of the box, this Wear device is suited to many other fitness apps. That example includes physical circuitry, voiding warranty, etc.

Lifelog being a good app is not a relevant point of discussion as that is software shipped with Sony phones, not shipped or forced to use with the wear device this deal is about. You've also highlighted the words Warning, software and sucks, again for a software product that is not bundled or required to use this device. You've put unnecessary negative connotations to this deal because you don't agree with the privacy violation of some of Sony's software - thats the point I was making about your comment being unfair.

        • @0p: >Don't you find that as intrusive?

For some bizarre reason you've latched onto Sony's app when you're using an Android phone.

If your Android device has any Google software on it then it's doing exactly what Sony's app does any time you have the location service running. You also cannot use fine grained privacy settings on any Google app's location usage: you either send that info you're so worried about to Google or you do not use location at all for any purpose.

I think life log is perfectly fine. And you can use other apps if you want (so says the Sony and other sites)

      • Personally, i find it too intrusive and unnecessarily over-complicated…
You could use apps like sleep as android or strava…

    • You dont HAVE to use lifelog if you dont like it. Plenty of alternatives including Google's own FIT.

I think this is a pretty decent watch. I've had it for about 18 months or more. I use Sony's own watchface as it gives me my daily steps. It syncs well with 'My Fitness Pal' when I go for a jog. I do get two days battery out of it as well.
Having said that. I wouldn't say it's a necessity though. It's totally a gimmick. I carry my phone on me all the time anyway so there's nothing the watch is performing independently. Total impulse buy as I had just bought a Xperia Z2.

    • +1

This watch has been out for over 18 months?!

    • It's definitely become a necessity for me. Android Wear has a tone of usefull apps these days from a cool launcher to an SMS app (Coffee) that tells you who texted without you having too look - through a vibration pattern that you set and lots more, including banking, various to-do's / shopping lists etc. I also use it for sleep tracking with Sleep As.

I reckon this stainless steel version is still the best looking smartwatch out there, regardless of the OS. I still get a lot of compliments for it and it cost me twice of this price (bought the original rubber version then ordered the stainless steel strap of eBay).

      • Is that a genuine stainless steel strap? I haven't found a genuine one separately.

        • Yes, Sony doesn't sell them separately. I got mine on eBay from a German seller some time back for slightly less than what this entire watch is selling for right now. That's why I think this is a fantastic deal, especially since this is still the current model, with a future replacement unlikely to offer anything of substance - think 4G capability and HRM…at 3 times the price.

Great watch IMHO. I use mine for steps tracking, bike and heart rate monitoring with a bluetooth strap. But mainly for message and call notifications as I don't hold my phone and it's always on silent.

    • Yeah not the sexiest device, but better battery and water resistant rating. Also packs GPS and NFC, which I believe the Moto 360 2015 does not.

      • NFC only can be used for pairing BT devices i guess, android pay is not supported for now on wear devices, Also will this watch be eligible for AW 2.0 update?

        • As bchliu has mentioned below, it is likely but unconfirmed. Sony has expressed interesting in bringing Android Wear 2.0 to it which supports them not releasing a successor yet.

I have both SW3 and the Moto360 like in the review. The Moto360 wins in looks but is absolutely rubbish in both performance and battery life. A well adjusted SW3 can last me 3 days of continual use. A Moto360 maybe one day of use if you are lucky. SW3 is what I'd gravitate to when I am on trips given it uses a MicroUSB charging (everything else requires a separate cradle) and the super long battery life with better performance.

      • How about LG Urbane? This doesn't seem to have heart rate sensor.

        • Yes.. its the only downside to this model. Has pretty much everything else bar the Heart Rate and LTE.

Urbane is a newer model (for both generations) but is considerably more expensive and is bulkier. I also am not a fan of the metal contact charging on the LG's as it can cause corrosion and charging will become a problem after about 12 months of use (I had this problem with my first LG G watch). You will need to sand and scrape it every month or so to get contacts working again to charge it.

        • @bchliu: I never had issue like this , was using my G Watch R for almost about 2 years and never had a issue like that.

        • @nipun5perera: This has happened on a number of previous models (including the original Sony Smartwatches SW1/2, Galaxy Gear etc). Although I havent been shocked or electrocuted.. but the fact is, you have skin and oils that are acidic and it does wear down the terminals as a result of voltage between them. Plenty of documented cases out there with this charging technology not suitable for watches. Have a look and you'll find that a couple of the terminal pins have changed colour (no longer gold but a grey in colour).

        • @bchliu: oh okay maybe I don't have oily hands.

Straps are worn out , other than that everything is alright.I charge it everyday.

      • And it has a built in GPS…

  • +1

    Thanks I just got one!

  • Have one of these bad boys, not a whole lot of support for square faces. Other than that it works as advertised.

    • What issues do you have with the square faces? I've been using this watch for years and haven't encountered any…

      • as in a lack of nice designs for square - most of the people design for round. Functionally they are fine.

        • I have been using the Intellicom watch face designer for a couple of years now (and I suspect there are many others that do the same thing), and was able to come up with a nifty watch face by gradually tweaking it over time. It actually lets you specify the model on the phone app and you can see what the watch face will look like in real time after making each tweak.

I'm using the free version but the full version gives you even more control.

  • Can this be used to make and receive cellular calls?

    • +1

No, it doesnt do that funcctionality.

    • +1

It will accept calls but you still have to talk through your phone.

  • Classic Black here cheaper by $8.

    • It looks a whole lot cheaper too IMO

    • What about jet black

  • Is it confirmed this one will get android 2.0?

    • +1

Still unconfirmed at this stage. Sony has not yet released a SW4 and there was a leak on some presentation slide that shows they were working on bringing it out. Even staying on 1.5, this watch is still good for the price you are paying.

  • Doe it have sleep tracker?

    • Works with Sleep As Android for sleep tracking, as do most Android wear watches. I'm sure there are other apps out there supporting sleep tracking on it also.

Anyone know where you can buy just the metal band? I have the silicon strap one and I've been looking everywhere to buy the metal band
