Nappy Bin Refills

Hi All,

We've recently had first child and now the cost of babyhood has hit us, especially nappies and bags.
Now we use one of these Sangenic Closer to Nature nappy bins from big w (which are awesome) but the refills are really expensive long term.

So Ive found this refill kit on ebay and want to know if anyone has tried refilling their own cartridges?

I started out down that road with our first born, but didn't really get to a special bin, just a regular waste bin. By the time we go to the third it was a plastic shopping bag slung over the change table then tied and disposed regularly. If anyone coming to visit, tied off and disposed before they got there. The outdoor main bin wasn't that far that we needed to stash days worth of nappies in a fancy schmancy 'system'

    • Same, pedal bin and ColesWorth rubbish bags :)

      • ditto. And anything excessively offensive went outside immediately.

Waste of money. Just use regular waste bin with rubbish bags. Ozbargain style.

Wow, what will they think of next? Survived 2 children using normal bags with a knot tied in them.
Never felt like I needed a "system"

The 'B' in baby stands for "Lets rip new and vulnerable parents off with any number of new products that make no practical sense we suddenly can't live without and only serve to bind their pay packet to us"

"As a guilty mum, I…." I love the checkout

  • Don't listen to them OP, that system is great. It's little time saving devices like this that make things a lot easier in the long run. When you're trying to change a baby and its squirming all over the place, its very convenient to have a bin that locks everything away and doesn't need to be changed for days.

its very convenient to have a bin that locks gullible people's money away and can be refilled with more of their wasted money in just a few short days.

      Fixed.

I dunno mate, people have spent much more on less frivolous things on this site.

    • how often do you take out your normal rubbish?

I contacted 3 different sellers on eBay about their refill packs and found out that they are just generic plastic film. Not scented and not biodegradable, so if you care about the smell or the environment you may not find them worthy.

Pootube was advertised on here with a measly $5 discount (the deals were ridiculed) but they do work out cheaper than the originals and are both scented and biodegradable.

I like the nappy bin because it saves me from daily trips down multiple flights of stairs to the bins. With that said, I haven't tried any of the generic refills since we ran out of the originals because we have hundreds of unused scented nappy bags to get through.

if you are using disposable nappies, why do the bags need to be biodegradable? The nappie inside is the toxic bit. Im not judging, we (child that is) uses disposables, just wondering why the bag needs to degrade?

Good point. I'm just doing my small part for the environment; every little helps.

It could also be argued that buying a plastic nappy bin is also not environmentally friendly, but convenience wins for me.

when it comes to nappies, convenience always wins :)

    • I bought the one on the ebay link in my first post (Eco nappy bins) as they say they do use bio-degradable plastic.
We've used it for a few weeks and its works like a dream, the plastic is exactly like the original sangenic so it twists well.

I know one of our friends bought a kit from another seller and found the plastic was quite thick so it was pretty hard to turn the cartridge and lock in the smell.

TBH Id rather pay $3.50 per refill that $10 for a cartridge for the next 1-2 years of my daughters nappy days!!!

  • How about buying a sanitary napkin bin and using normal sized bags? Might work out cheaper in the long run. That's what I plan to do when I have my first child in the future.

  • DO NOT BUY THE REFILL KIT ON EBAY

We tried that. Our Sangenic works great - no smells, easy to use, easy to refill, love it. A few months ago I decided to try one of the refill kits on eBay. We persisted with it for about a month or so, but eventually the smell was too great. The refill kits just can't handle the smell.

We realised one important thing. You are not paying for the plastic, you are paying for the odour protection. The refill kits don't have this, and I guarantee your bin will start to smell in very short order. We now use the refill kit for waste disposal in the shed, and purchase original Sangenic refills in volume on eBay.

Looked into the bulk refill rolls but haven't ended up trying any as I couldn't find anything significantly cheaper with good reviews.

We're too lazy to be taking sh1tty nappies outside all the time, using one of these means they go out in bulk every few days and there's no smell in the house. Originally thought the refills were overpriced and tried some other cheaper methods mentioned above but always ended up with a room that stank of baby poo unless the stinky nappies went out straight away (which rarely happened).

Haven't paid much attention but would guess the refill cassettes last us around a week. We buy up if we see them under $10.

It's all relative I guess. $10 a week is hardly a huge hit to the costs of having a kid but then I can't see the value in spending $500+ on video cards to play games or $450 on a Lego set but it makes sense to the people who do.

Remember that the smell of the poos will change once they start eating solids and it isn't for the better.

Our second kid is close to one.

    • I don't know… in our house I make sure I clear the rubbish bins from the kitchen every night don't want my kitchen smelling bad, attracting bugs, ants and flies.

so if I'm chucking out the kitchen trash, it would make sense to chuck out the baby waste bin also.

I agree people spend a lot of money on things that others sometimes cant comprehend. I guess that's the beauty of consumerism.

baby and wedding are 2 things in the world where the cost automatically increases when either of the 2 are part of a product name.

I'm the same as you 3yo + 1yo having saying that.. the wife has done a fantastic job on toilet training the kids. first was nappy free about 2 years old and my second already can do #2 in the toilet.

  • We used something called a 'diaper champ' which uses any brand bin liner so saves a fortune in the long run. This is it here (sold out though but you could probably find it lots of places): http://www.graysonline.com/retail/FDC3041R/toys-and-games/di…

  • Similar to Flipsahoy, we use an Ubbi Pail. It's a bit pricey, but very well made, and then we just use regular supermarket bin bags. https://www.thestorknest.com.au/?s=ubbi+pail&post_type=produ… is where we bought ours (they sell unpopular colours for $59.95 sometime). Shop around obviously.

We loved it so much, we bought a second one for upstairs.

It's a bit stinky when changing the bin bag, so we do that outside, and leave it outside open for a few hours to freshen it before replacing the bin bag.

  • If people think that the nappy refills dont hold the smell. there are prolly 2 obvious reasons.
    1. cheap plastic, if they use a cheap thicker plastic, then its harder to turn the cartridge and create a twist.
    2. you have to do at least 2 full rotations of the cartridge to create a proper seal.

one twist on a really smelly &^%& wont lock in the smell.

for the record this is the one I got and works a treat.
