  • Is this any better than the new Google Chromecast Ultra ?

    • +2

Has a remote & is standalone, so doesn't rely on casting stuff, same as Apple TV/WDTV

      • Isn't there an app to remote control the Chromecast?

        • +2

Each to their own, but I prefer a standalone thing (have 2x WDTVs), and not have to bother about using my phone just to control it

        • @Spackbace:

I'm looking to replace my old WDTV. Might wait until the Google Chromecast Ultra hits $60 early next year…

        • +1

          @jv:

Yeah I'm hoping for something better soon with newer support. WD could've done well out of those if only they cared about them!

        • @Spackbace: They made a lot of money with wd devices, but did not continue the legacy with new better products.

        • @Gaggy:

From everything I've seen, they really abandoned owners of the devices pretty early on in its life. Firmware came few and far between

        • @Spackbace: True. I use my LG blue ray player to play most of the movies as they support DLNA from my Plex server on PC or NAS drive. Sometimes I simply copy the movies to HDD and play directly.
Other way is to used Kodi from mobile to play via chromecast as well which works fine for same movies. Not sure is sound quality is differnet in all.
If you have a new TV, most of them support DLNA and if you have NAS, you will be fine running movies and dont need such devices.

        • @Gaggy:

          most of them support DLNA

          crap interface though…

        • @jv: Cant say it is and works though….

    • It's like comparing a push bike to a Porsche. Chromecasts have their uses I'm sure (I've just not found one) but these devices are on another level…..especially if you have a good internet connection.

      • but these devices are on another level

        how ?

        • +6

I think gasman uses his Chromecast downstairs, and the Android TV upstairs….

        • +1

          @ndro777:

I've no real use for the Chromecasts that I bought via Ozbargains (too cheap not to buy) whereas the android boxes are indispensable. Streaming from your phone or PC to a TV is so 2014.

        • @gasman70:

Streaming from your phone or PC to a TV is so 2014.

          Won't a chromecast play from a file server ?

        • +2

@jv: You have to play the file on a handheld or PC device before you hand it over to Chromecast. That is why Chromecasts are pretty much a two step process.

        • @search:

          Oh… I never knew that… thanks…

        • @search: and it supports fewer file types than (say) a Kodi box. Those that aren't supported natively need to be transcoded. More work for the server.

        • +1

          @jv: Yep, you;re correct - they do.
All you need is an app like LocalCast that runs files from your DLNA server. The app directs Chromecast to play the file from DLNA server. That doesn't mean the video is being played in the phone/tablet in the background.

    • Check out Mi Box: http://www.mi.com/en/mibox/ which has just officially been launched in US for USD 69. It runs Android TV 6.0 so I think it looks better than this KII Pro, at least software-wise and Xiaomi officially partnered with Google for the Mi Box.

      Sources: http://www.theverge.com/2016/5/18/11704964/new-google-chrome…, http://venturebeat.com/2016/10/03/xiaomi-launches-69-mi-box-…

      • Looks good but the spec sheets don't indicate that it actually plays free to air tv.

    • Not really comparable is it? The Ultra is streaming only, this one can record TV as well, plug in USB hard drives for play back, play Android games and apps, comes with remote, has ethernet for more reliable network…..list goes on. Apples and Oranges in my opinion.

      • +1

has ethernet for more reliable network

        It's only 10/100 Ethernet…

        • I'm aware, and yes I prefer Gigabit, but my Samsung 10/100 Smart TV streams DLNA from my NAS at 23.1Mbs (Allegiant straight BluRay copy no compression) with Dolby 5.1 just fine without stuttering so not sure this is an issue assuming the box is capable of streaming at the same rate?)

My point is ethernet is a known quantity. With my ac router I still can't get a reliable signal other side of the house on some devices, the speed has way too many dips and don't use the microwave for my 2.4GHz devices.

EDIT Oh wait I get your point I guess it may not be enough for 4K. I haven't tried that. But that same demand is on wireless I guess.

  • DVB-T2

According to wikipedos Australia isn't a country that uses DVB-T2. Though to be clear i just looked at wikipedia because I have nfi what DVB-T2 was so I might be way off here ;)

    • +1

We use DVB-T - DVB-T2 is simply the improved version and I believe it's backwards compatible.

      • Yeah but DVB-T2 isn't used by AU broadcasters - according to wiki.

        • Is there anything by AU broadcasters on KODI??

        • +2

          "…backwards compatible."

        • +1

And it'll still work if it's backwards compatibile.

        • @Clear: Indeed.

        • @gasman70: Kodi is a media player that is sometimes used by awful pirates to setup streaming of live tv and other terribly awful things.

          So no :p

        • +1

          @Diji1:

          But it's damn good though!

        • +1

@gasman70: I believe there is an MX Live TV Add-on. Although I've never tried installing it.

  • You are better off waiting for the newly announced Xiaomi Mi box android TV. This has voice searching and chromecast built in, and it's only US$69.

    • Yeah that looks pretty good, with 4K / HDR / 10bit HEVC, and apparently is one of the very few streaming boxes to be certified for HD Netflix (nearly every other Android box is limited to SD / 480p).

Main cons are no ethernet (can be fixed with an USB ethernet adapter), only 1 USB 2.0 port, and availability…how can you buy one of these things?

      • Geekbuying will likely stock it as they have the previous Mi Boxes and they're an official seller of Xiaomi for overseas.

        • +1

So to reiterate (without reading too much in to it), Geekbuying are gonna start selling it next week and you are going to do a super OzB special on it?

        • +1

          @kirt:
It's showing up on their website for pre-order http://www.geekbuying.com/item/-Official-International-Versi…

Shame they want us$30 more than retail

        • @bigAlOz: Presell isn't always the final price and I'm sure I could get it lower ;)

        • @Clear:
Hope so as I'd be very keen to buy one, even though I already own 3 chromecasts, 2 android boxes and 2 nexus players.

        • @bigAlOz: And here I thought I was excessive with my Chromecast and 4 Android boxes.

        • @Clear:

Presell isn't always the final price and I'm sure I could get it lower ;)

Maaaate! Any idea of when Geekbuying will be getting stock, and what sort of price you could do it for?

I know a lot of the WP guys are keen for one too:

@kirt: GB staff return from holidays tomorrow I'll see if I can get an estimate then.

        • @Clear:

          Legend :)

      • +1

Unfortunately, you can't, yet! Available only in-store at Walmart. Not even available directly through Xiaomi http://www.mi.com/en/mibox/. When looking around, be careful as Xiaomi make other android boxes that look exactly the same. Make sure the remote has the voice search button.

        • Make sure the remote has the voice search button.

          Cheers ;)

    • Looks good but the spec sheets don't indicate that it actually plays free to air tv.

  • Can anyone provide me with good widgets for Kodi?

  • I think this will be better option.
    http://www.banggood.com/COOLEME-MB2-Amlogic-S912-2G-RAM-16G-…

    Cheaper yet upgraded processor.

    • +2

      Except it doesn't have DVB-T2/DVB-S2.

  • +1

First post on OzBargain! Can anyone help me with the following questions:

Would I be able to connect an optical drive to one of the USB ports and watch DVD/Blu-Rays?
Can I connect an additional USB Tuner so that it makes it a twin tuner and use it as a PVR?

I don't have NAS at the moment so it would be recording to an attached USB hard drive.

  • +1

Saw this but noticide that there is a newer model KIII PRO DVB. Not sure when it will be available.

Differences. Newer Amlogic S912 cpu, 3gb ram, latest Android 6 OS, gigabit network.
