The first book of 5 of the increasingly inaccurately named hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy trilogy. One of my top 5 books, ever. Genuinely clever, funny and unique. Give it a go.

    • +2

I have the physical copy subtitled: "A trilogy in four parts".

      • +1

so it's mostly harmless and another thing your missing :)

Agree, it is hilarious. Marvin robot with self-proclaimed "brains the size of a planet" is my favourite character, with top quotes like: "Do you want me to sit in a corner and rust, or just fall apart where I am standing?"

Are the new galaxies covered (s7, s7 edge, note)?

      Dad, get off the computer!

    Ah memories…
Interviewed DNA in the late 80s (Dirk Gently books), on condition there were to be NO questions about the Hitchhiker series. Publicists can be cruel.
It was still a fun interview😯

He only gave 2 interviews in Brisbane & I scored longer one than for national TV (ABC's 7:30 program).

    Enjoy the read 🐋

Yeah, I remember getting him to sign one of his books for a friend in Bookworld Brisbane Anzac Square, back in maybe 88 or 89 when I was at QUT. Gee that was so long ago.

      • +2

Lucky you friend - I was too busy for the book signing. Yes, that's where I met his publicist to convince her to let me conduct an unconventional interview. We walked back to his hotel nearby & he met us in the foyer. Was not prepared for how tall he was.

From memory, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul had just been released - so probably 1988, but DNA was more interested in his work in progress Last Chance to See (1990).

Interview was conducted on limo drive between city & ABC Toowong studio. My reviewer had family problems so I was the last minute replacement & hadn't read the book for the interview! Tape & story is somewhere in the archives. Was great getting out of the limo & shaking hands with DNA in front of his fans. I loved his books, but it's better for an interview if you're not a big fan.

Adams was a fan of the Macintosh. That's the angle I used to get the interview - as my Uni's consultant in Macs & lecturing in writing with Macs. My research interest was into how the technology writers use changes their writing, so I considered DNA a prime example. Was able to pepper my Uni lectures with DNA interview references after that. Helped maintain interest, not that I really needed that as more students attended than were enrolled. That's almost unheard of at Uni & I didn't even have a degree. Those were wonderful days😯

Edit: The book's no longer free on US Amazon, and somehow the AU Amazon link didn't work for me. Decided to search GPlay and found that it's free as well.

  • Thanks OP!

Well get it while you can, I'm in the process of sending this book back through a temporal warp. After younger me claims the copyright there will be no more of this disgusting "free" business.
