Just keep in mind that if you are the sort of person to pick up these cheap, crap games with trading cards to sell the cards for a profit then you're contributing to the explosion of "shovelware" games on Steam. Developers are encouraged to pump out crap rather than decent games because they make a commission off the trading card sales. Seriously, don't turn PC gaming into the mobile app stores with bazillion of games and very little that's any good.

Yeah I stopped about a year ago. Getting sick of searching through absolute filth to find anything half good. Getting sick of Steam friends buying crappy indie games for $20 and playing them non-stop for 2 days then never touching them again (Stardew Valley). Getting sick of the Steam store in general. Can't trust individual reviews. Can barely trust aggregate reviews. Now's the perfect time for another service to come along and commit to an attempt to gain market dominance. Just not EA or Ubisoft.

      Nothing against OP.

      • Calling Stardew Valley absolute filth is pretty harsh. The dev just released an update for it with a whole bunch more content. It is a sim game, which some people may not like. I'm really enjoying it - relaxing and peaceful to play.

        • I didn't call it absolute filth i called it a crappy indie game.

        • @Putnum:

Calling Stardew Valley a crappy indie game is pretty harsh.*

So rocket league, being $20, would also be considered a crappy indie game? Or does it get spared the title of crappy by the absolute frame of reference that is your preferences?

        • @Domingo: it's not my preference it's longevity. The Rocket League player base is still on the rise while Stardew Valley has diminished to 4 figures.

    • Not redeeming these freebies will do nothing for your cause in my opinion.
Steam is a business and by its very nature is dependent on a constant stream of new games which people then buy because they are curious, they like the trailer etc. That is how they make their money.
If Steam only had 50 new games (albeit high quality although of course that is highly subjective) coming out every year, then that would be bad for business and leave an opening for another service.
If you look at discussions re Steam, one main argument vs Origin and UPlay (and Desura when it was there) is the amount of choice on Steam as opposed to only a few AAA games on Origin and UPlay.
If you want to change Steam, stop buying anything from Steam and of course get 2 million friends to do the same. Then you might have a chance to change Steam's behaviour. One other problem is why will decide beforehand if a game is crap or not - again you will have to rely on other people's subjective assessments which can result in games you think are bad still making it through to the Steam store.
This is just my opinion which of course is subjective.

Personally, I like to give every game a chance rather than rely on any reviews. I have come across games with bad reviews which I liked very much as the criticism, as it turned out, was very petty and not relevant to me.

      • If you're buying these cheap games because you want to try them and get enjoyment from doing so then that's great.

The issue is simply that the trading cards distort the economic basis of game development on Steam, because whereas before the incentive was to make a game good so lots of people downloaded it, now the incentive is to churn out as much derivative garbage with trading cards as possible.

There are probably loads of people out there that don't have any idea of the race to the bottom that they're encouraging by buying "shovelware". If the message gets out and more people become aware, there's a chance Steam will do something to change / fix it. I don't actually think it's in Steam's interest to become like the app stores, because people will end up supporting a competitor (and they'll get less commission because the prices get pushed down).

There's a quote about democracy, something along the lines of "democracy is the worst form of government, apart from all those other forms that have been tried from time to time". Substitute "Steam" for "democracy" and it's probably equally true! :) With Steam, just like with democracy, the answer is probably about trying to refine what we've got rather than throw it all out the window.

  • Does anybody know how to check the validity of a Steam key without actually redeeming it? Last I used Steam when I redeemed a key it would happen instantly before telling me what the key was for and no option to confirm. I have a couple of keys which I want to make sure are valid but not actually redeem.

    Any ideas?

    • Not possible.
If you have a game in your library and try to redeem a key for the same game, then it will tell you and the key will remain valid. However, if you do not have the game in your library, then the key will be redeemed.
Unfortunately, to my knowledge, there is no way to check Steam key validity.

      • Eh bummer. When you redeem on Xbox it says you are about to add xxx to your account and lets you confirm or cancel, Steam really needs something like that.

        Thank you.
