12bit/108MHz Video DAC

1080p Full HD Level Upscaling
Enjoy high picture quality with 1080p Full HD Upscaling function which upscales all SD content on DVDs (576i) to Full HD 1080p levels (720p/1080i/1080p). Furthermore, as the pictures generated are progressive and not interlaced, they possess twice the amount of scanning lines and have a higher resolution, which makes everything looks better.

  • Great deal with 1080p and HDMI but cannot play rmvb, hence no good to me …

  • ahh h26 and mkv would be nice, the main thing this has got going for it is the remote

    http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/home_entertainment/sony…

    still loving my dvico

  • If you want HDMI, you probably also want h264/AVC codec and high-def decoding, as well as MKV and MP4 (= Apple .m4v) containers.

I can't link to a cheap high-def equivalent player now, but the sub-$100 blu-ray players (with USB) like the Soniq listed in this forum do the job nicely.
Has anyone seen any cheap high-def media-players without optical drive? Should be easy using the same chips as the blu-rays.
So they cannot be far away.
Perhaps the user interface in the Sony is better? But AVI and DivX is ancient history to me now.

    • The user interface is not good on this one , its one of the negatives in the review.

    • Nationite HDVP-2. Decodes every format and HD you can think of for ~$110 delivered.

No MKV? And upscaling divx to 1080p would HORRIBLE. Looks like a terrible product, but won't neg cause it may be a bargain I guess.

Not sure why people are voting you down? You are correct. No mkv support is not optimum. You didn't neg, you just said a fact. If you take a divx at the best quality they come in, 624x352 then times that by 3 it will look shocking. Every pixel normally is now represented by 3 and that will look at sharp as an unused wooden pencil.
BUt it is a bargain, but I would personally pay more for something that in a years time will still be used. This will, but only if you are stuck in January 2009. Since then 720p tv rips have become very popular.

      • I know why. Because the Internet is full of idiots.

  • This would be just perfect for me if it had support for more video formats, shame.

  • At this price, I bought one for when I am working overseas and won't have access to a PS3. That way, can still watch all my downloaded TV shows. Figure I'll test it out here and if it's a complete dud, I'll just sell it on. And if it works sweet, I may even use it here too, as it may save burning the PS3 out. Will this produce a similar picture quality to the PS3 if you are viewing standard 350MB .avi files if you hook it up via HDMI cable?

  • Kinda useless without the support of the major formats.

I just called City Software to find out shipping costs: $10 to Melbourne, $15 to Brisbane, sorry I did not check for Sydney….I'm just a lazy Mexican !

  • Now sold out. Pretty amazing, when I ordered at lunchtime there were 182 units in stock.
