If you have a HP printer on the list and it hasn't updated, I would be turning off autoupdates quick smart to avoid being forced to buy genuine inks, or having to bin your printer.
Yes that happened to me, so I wont buy HP products any more
I also got stung, the only difference is mine never updated, HP confirmed after alot of bother, that the firmwave the printer came with was the one I had.
That was a HP8610
I was pissed. I do have some news on this matter. They are going to work around with another update, one to reverse the issue, it will still be a few weeks off.
In saying that HP also said they would not guarantee that they will not activate in again in the future as the message is now clear. They also were very unapologetics for what they have done.
My advise is let people know, literal, they are trying to end a free market.
Don't buy there products.
Return it to stores, can you really trust they wont do it again in another 6 months (I complained to officeworks, my printer is 6 months old and they never informed me about this hidden malware - not as described. Full refund
Buy something alittle less fancy thats dirt cheap I recommend The Canon MX-726 $85 (its slow)

Replace non-genuine ink on ebay for pgi-650bk etc etc series i paid $24 inc shipping from sydney for 20 cartridges.
And remember what HP did in the future, when buying products!
The ACCC won their case, and HP have been forced to refund affected users $50.

Disgusting, $50 compensation is all they could come up with? A cartridge that costs ~$1-2 to make and charging people $50+ for it. Their profit margins are so large, that they've probably already made more than enough money from you.

Updating your firmware effectively locks you into genuine cartridges untill the aftermarket works out a work around.
Problem is, take a look at all the cartridges listed as compatible on eBay.
The last 2 sets of cartridges we have purchased for our 8620 have been rejected by the printer.
