Just bought a few days ago for $20 more! Awesome deal OP.

    • Where did you get it for $20 more? used?

      • No, new. Here.

        • Me too! Doh!

That was my post too…. Sorry!!! :(

  • +1

Should I buy this even though I don't need it until late November? I'm worried I might find it cheaper by then!

    • +21

Mate, this is OzBargain. The place where you buy things irrespective to your needs.

    • Chance it could go the other way. The i6700 non k version was $us288 on Amazon recently, it's now $us305.

    • +1

In the true spirit of OzBargain, I ordered 2. Can't wait to get them!

    • If you don't want it now, wait for the 7th gen Kaby Lake processors (should be released by end Q3 or in Q4).

Edit: Nevermind now that you already bought'em.

  • Is the K version worth the +10% price?

    • +3

I'd say yes. Higher base clock and you can overclock it even higher

      • What sort of perfomance gain could one expect to squeeze out of it? More than 10%?

        • +1

To OC it you would need an extra cooler too so factor that in. With a mid range air cooler I am sitting fine at 4.6 GHz, so its not a massive improvement. I have heard that the K version i5 OC much better.

    • Only if you plan on overclocking.

Edit: Forgot about the higher base clock.

    • +1

Don't forget it'll also set you back a few hundred for a decent CPU cooler! You need one for the K version.

      • +1

I just bought the Cooler Master Hyper 212X for $49. Seems to do the trick, but I haven't overclocked yet but I've heard good things.

        • That's what I did. In second thought I should have bought a Corsair liquid cooler. It's much smaller. The Hyper 212 is enormous and I'll probably have to buy a new case.

        • @mazorn:

Yeah, it is big.. I was building new, so found a case big enough (JUST!)

Antec N200 allows coolers up to 160mm so 1mm clearance had the side panel fit just :)

      • I don't plan on overclocking this - will my fan cooler from my i7 920 work ok for this CPU?

        • -1

If you're not overclocking, definitely get the 6700 instead and not the K.

        • @tightm8: Already purchased the K..

Will the cooler from my i7 920 work?

        • @iDroid:
Wait for a more professional answer, but I think you can just try and monitor the temperature. I don't think they would ship it with the original fan if it wasn't "compatible" or at least functional.

        • @iDroid: What fan is it? Should work

        • @iLoveYourFace: just the stock one that came with my i7 920 "back in the day"..

        • @iDroid: I don't think so as it won't have a mounting bracket (I could be wrong about that). Maybe buy a Hyper 212x for $49.00AUD from MSY to be safe.

        • @solidred: Thanks - grabbed a Hyper 212x from MSY.

  • I got a cpu that does 3.4 Ghz base clock to the 6700k 4.0Ghz. Is this price gonna be the best around for a while? Should I even spend the money to upgrade?

    • +1

      Probably not.

If your cpu is from within the last 3-4 years your probably ok… but what are you using it for?

  • +2

Thanks OP, grabbed one - time to upgrade my i7 920

Got my money's worth out of this thing!

Now off to MSY to grab a new mobo - any suggestions? (I'm not a gamer)

    • bump

    • Asrock Z170 Pro4 - $159

    • I ended up buying the MSI Z170M mortar. I read good reviews on Amazon and newegg.

    • I have the same CPU.. time for an upgrade

    • Depends if you want a themed mobo to match your case etc, but i have mine paired with the asus z170-ar and no real complaints, maybe to few usb ports

      • Naa, I'm a plain as they come here.. Good performance & reliability is all I care for, plain wrapped is fine by me if the product performs.

      • Ive got the Z170-AR in transit, what RAM did you put in yours mate? And are you overclocking your rig?

    • What ya doing with the old motherboard? I've been after an LGA 1366 motherboard but because they're so old they are hard to find.

      • Going into wife's machine - otherwise I'd have been happy to give it away.

    • I'm using the ASUS Z170M-Plus … will do some gaming but nothing multi GPU.

Stable so far (with some BIOS updates)

  • Amazing deal! Damn it! I just bought from Futu which was $429 after cashback. This one is $408.70 after cashback!

    Could've saved $20 lol

    Haha

    • How do you claim this cashback offer?

    • I'm interested too!
      Just bought the i7 6700K :)

      • +1

Cashrewards has 1.25% off ebay purchases

  • bought the I7. Cheap enough for me to give up waiting for Kaby Lake. Holding out on GPU drops though
    Will head MSY for Mobo/RAM

  • Is this worth an upgrade from a 4770k?

    • +1

I'd wait for the 7700k - but no idea about the price difference as its not been released…just some intial specs have been leaked/released. New 7700K will work on the 1151 socket boards, but a new gen of motherboards are getting ready to take advantage of some of the 7th gen features (better VR performance, more 3.1, SSD optimisation, etc)….same sort of release, around Q4 this year

  • I bought back when this was going for about $370 from kogan/ebay (6700k), hell worth it have it sitting at a cozy 4.5 on stock voltage

  • Wow these are good deals. Thanks.

I'm currently rockin' an i5-3550 and an ASRock H77 Pro4/MVP motherboard combo that is a few years old now. I recently upgraded my GPU to a GTX 1080 and am considering a CPU upgrade. Apologies in using you guys as a quick Google but as I've been out of the CPU/MB market for awhile now…

    1. Is this a worthwhile upgrade (in terms of CPU power, value for dollars etc, don't really plan to overclock)?
    2. Do I need a new MB as well?

    Thanks!

    • +1

From your post you sound like you already know what you're doing.
      1. Anything is an upgrade from that processor, but how big a difference? I can't comment.
      2. Your mobo will need to support LGA 1151. So yes, you will need a new mobo, probably need to shell out for ram too.

I did read/watched a video somewhere even a 6700k can bottleneck a GTX1080. If you can hold out till Kaby Lake or even Cannon Lake, do so.

      • Thanks Wokstar, appreciate the reply. A new CPU plus MB plus ram may not look great in the bank account after the recent 1080 hit so I may have to hold off! Currently playing Rise of the Tomb Raider with the above set up plus an Acer 1440p 144Hz G-Sync monitor which looks brilliant so not noticing the old CPU too much as yet!

  • +1

IT's showing $390 for the non 'K' now.

    • That sucks!

      • not cool j4ack, my friend is upset. my child has no shoes.

        • That's not good man…You should probably do something about that, hey?

  • +2

Thanks OP. Picked one up yesterday. Long time coming for me, upgrading from a Core2Duo Q6600. I bought the Strix GTX1070, but the CPU is so old it bottlenecks pretty badly so I can't wait out for Kaby Lake. Probably completing my build this weekend.

    • +1

Yeah you desperately needed an upgrade. I have an i5-4690k and I'm tempted to buy but I don't really need it. I'd rather get a new monitor
