Driving from Brisbane to Melbourne in Seven Days

Hi Ozbargainers,

Not sure if this is the right site to be posting this sort of questions but will be driving from Brisbane to Melbourne in seven days. Any suggestions to which cities/towns that might make the drive worthwhile?

Currently thinking of going through Brisbane -> Gold Coast -> Sydney -> Canberra -> Melbourne. According to Google Maps, will take us 20 hours or so +/- 4 hours. Will be splitting all this in seven days obviously.

Any recommendations will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
Kendall J

  • Great Ocean Road. Much better and more beautiful.

      • The Great Ocean Road as in the Tourism sense. Coastal road between Melbourne and Brisbane is actually signposted as such at some spots. It was when I did it.

Overseas it is that route which is advertised as Great Ocean Road, not just Adelaide bit.

  • +1

I did Byron Bay, Port Macquaire and Coffs Harbour as well when I did Brisbane to Melbourne around 4 years ago in addition to the towns you have mentioned.

  • Nimbin.

If you're a fan of museums, definitely keep an eye out. I popped by the Temora Aviation Museum and loved every bit of it. They have a massive collection of WW2 aircraft.

    • they have 2 spitfires.

while there you can head to Junee prison.

  • If you're from Melbourne then you probably want to make more stops closer to Brisbane and then do longer segments closer to Melbourne. You could even do the whole 7 hours from Canberra to Melbourne on the last day.

I think you should do a trip up to the Sunshine Coast on the first day. There's heaps of attractions and sightseeing you can do here… feel free to PM me for advice.

  • rather than taking the hume highway to Melbourne from Canberra, take a detour and join the great ocean road (the coastal road) from Nowra and drive on it, you'll enjoy the drive a lot more and there are some interesting stuff to see along the way as well :)

    • Is there much speed traps?
How about some bending mountain roads for some spirited driving?

Isnt the Great Ocean Road from Geelong to the SA border?

Thats the opposite direction to where the OP wants to go.

The Great Ocean Road starts at Torquay and travels 244 kilometres westward to finish at Allansford near Warrnambool,[1] the largest city along the road.

    • Thats a huge detour. Maybe you meant the princes hwy?

      • I did, my bad, I meant to say Princess highway, but I think the detour is worth it. You can take the princess highway directly from Sydney if you aren't interested in Canberra.

  • Canberra to Melbourne via the Hume Highway is the most direct but has nothing of interest except maybe refueling in Albury/Wodonga. You miss out on the coastal towns of Victoria and NSW.

If you are very confident with driving on mountain roads take the scenic route from Melbourne to Sydney via the Princes Highway (the coastal route). A rule of thumb for the South Coast in VIC and NSW is the more you detour the better the scenery.

    Eg. in Victoria:
    - Phillip Island. Has fairy penguin tours. Track days for the racing circuit.
    - Lakes Entrance. Has relaxing water views.

To include Canberra its possible to detour through Victoria's Alpine region (Omeo or Bombala) or via the NSW south coast (Bega > Canberra > Batemans Bay).

  • I'd stop off at Coffs Harbour or Port Macquarie rather than Gold Coast. Otherwise you'll have a massive drive CG to Sydney the next day.

    • I think it really depends what you're wanting to see. If you want to party and drink etc. go to GC otherwise I'd give it a miss and head to Byron Bay which is a little bit more laid back but still good for a drink or head to Coffs for some more scenery.
