Phones to replace a Moto G

Hi all,

My father's Moto G died. I'm looking for something to replace it. What's the equivalent value-for-money phone at the moment?

Basically $200-300 (or less) would be ideal but at a stretch <$500. All he does it browse and watch youtube (and now Optus sports).

Should I just be waiting for deals to pop-up?

Thanks Ozbargainers.

    • Does the phone have 4G?

      • I have no idea but your father had one and this is a deal for another.

Only on one of the Sims. The second sim is 2G only.

    A phone to replace a Moto G is a new Moto G

      Very logical

Haha I told my wife that I'd get sarcastic comments about getting a new Moto G.

Well it's not sarcastic really, it's logical.

My only concern is the comments in the thread linked by PVA seems to indicate that the Moto G is no longer the best value-for-money phone. Specs a bit behind?

      • Good enough for internet and YouTube with local warranty.

But Xiaomi note 3 pro has better cpu, bigger screen and battery @ $190

On the another side, Moto has better camera and screen than Xiaomi.

Moto G4/G4 plus, Nexus 5x are another options.

If you're willing to go above 500 by a little i'd definitely go with the one plus 3. It's 603 on eGlobal and it has specs comparable to the s7. It would definitely last quite a while for parents.

If you want cheaper, i'd look at the one plus 2 for 439 on eGlobal too. It's only one generation back and since you're not using it for anything extensive it would be really good and last just as long.

If you really want to budget have a look at XiaoMi phones. They range from 150-300 ish but i'm not too familiar with them. Xiaomi Max Dual Sim 32GB for 333. It has a larger screen too that i know parents do like better.

  • Just go thed newer mofo g

  • (and now Optus sports)

If he's going to be watching the footie on it, he'll want a big screen and some acceptable sound. I'd be looking for an older 5.5" phone which still gets some support. The LG G4 is unfortunately problematic because of the bootloop. The LG G5 is a possible as the price continues to fall. The Nexuses are still too expensive. Samsungs, HTC and Sony similarly overpriced.

I think I might look to one of the cheap chinese makes. Something with a big screen, 1080p, but just an OK processor. They can be had for cheap money and would probably match your father's needs - something like ZTE or Huawei should be easy enough to source. Maybe the ZTE Blade V Plus from Good Guys if you don't want to order directly from China? Knock them down to <$299.

    • The Nexus 5x isn't expensive. Look at all the past deals to get an idea of the price. It's a good phone too and it beats the Moto G 2015 in many areas.

For somebody who's been using a Moto G and has gotten used to the 'stock' Android experience, the Nexus 5x should provide a familliar GUI.

      • Yeah, but for the watching of the sport it hasn't got a big screen, and that seems to be the main use case - hence the targeting of 5.5 and up screen sizes.

      • Any idea on the 5X vs Moto G4 Plus?
I know they're two tight competitors

        • they're not two tight competitors.

5x has the better camera, CPU and best update support.

Could try the prepaid alcatel pop 4 5" from Optus @$119 - it has a 5" screen, and could use on optus network.

  • My wife has a Sony C4. Great phone, clear big screen, 5.5inch..4g. Really good cameras too. Around 300-400 at mobileciti, Australian stock too.

  • is definitely the best replacement for a moto G is NOT a windows nokia.

Continuing with an android and familiarity of Moto G is certainly the best option

    Moto G3 $305

    or
    Moto G4 $375

  • I just bought for my dad, the Motorola Moto G 4 Plus at The Good Guys.
    $378 minus 2 x $25 vouchers, so I'm happy with the price.

  • Sony C5 with a 6inch screen. Wife has the C4, great phone.
    $299 from Sony http://store.sony.com.au/XPERIAC5ULTM.html

  • Thank you all for your input.

He went and got it repaired.

Haha what an idiot I am to forgot that option.

At least I've got a list of phones now to look into when my Moto G dies.
