    Excellent price.
Also brown Jasmin sunrice on special for $6.75
I wasn't aware of the brown version.

    • +1

it's pretty good.. i've been buying it for a year now and won't switch back to jasmine anytime soon

      • I would stick to white rice thanks to the phytate and (greater) arsenic content in brown rice.

I have a 50/50 mix of white and brown rice everyday.
I really enjoy the nutty flavour of brown rice.
I ferment my brown rice for a day, apparently it dramatically reduces the phytic acid.

        • @jm48: Good point on the ferment, if you enjoy the flavour it's a great way to go. Thanks for sharing.

        • That first link is from 1996 and the second is about rice in the USA. Got anything more relevant?

        • @lainey13: Yes, here's one from 2009: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19774556

When a study finds brown rice to have phytates, it doesn't need to be recent (I don't believe studies continue to search for the same thing), unless we GMO brown rice which is just as bad.

Also, not sure why brown rice would be different in US vs Australia in terms of antinutrients? Found this study: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24892387

Arsenic collects in the grain's outer layers, this is removed in white rice, but I believe there's still some traces, 80% more in brown.

As mentioned by jm48, if you soak, sprouted or fermented brown rice, this may not be an issue. From what I know it doesn't eliminate it completely and can aggravate the gut, where white rice doesn't.

      • I will have to try it, though the jasmine comes from thailand I think.
Which is a slight turn off compared to the Aussie grown medium grain.

Keywords: Moudly Maggot 2015. hope they improved since

    • I've been buying it since the start of 2015 with no issues

      • next time when u go asian grocer, try a pack of thai jasmine rice. superior quality. highly recommended.

    • So now it is not just rice but a meal for the same price? Bargain!

  • +1

    They also have:

    STRAWBERRY (250g) 4x $5

    • +3

      …strawberries go with rice now?
      BLOODY HIPSTER FOOD FADS!

      • Is it not?

  • is that still cheap compared to the asian markets?

    • +1

depends on the quantity you buy.
      And also brand.
For 5kgs pretty good price but more likely cheaper per kg in asian markets if you buy a larger qty.

I find sunrice to be medium quality as well.

    • +1

i think these are aus produce. asian grocer has thai produce, which are more fragrant and better quality. personally i like thai rice better.

    • i rarely eat rice but know sunrice is old rice. coles home brand is even older. it takes longer to cook. asian places tend to sell newer crop.

  • +1

as a family of rice eater, I've already set the price drop for all rice on pricehipster. handy!

    • +1

Haha, that's how I found about this deal this morning. Price Hipster is such a useful tool

      • +1

Thanks. I do my best to keep improving it every day. ☺

  • Like rice? If any board likes rice it's this one.

  • Came here for the comments!

  • was $6 for 10kg @ Woolworths so useful for those that missed out! :)

    • When was that? How can I miss it?? This has always been around $26-$27 per 20 kg bag at our local asian store.

      • +1

It was long grain so I didn't buy.

      • +1

yeah my apologies. it was the normal white/brown rice… maybe long grain? (comment below)
I thought I bought the short grain though? I'm not aware…

  • what can I cook with this?

  • Bugger. Just bought a 5kg bag of the (Brown) Jasmine rice last night!!!
Really happy with it though. Had been buying brown Thai Jasmine rice but its been getting harder to come by.
Its a great product though - no where near as chewy/tasteless as "normal" brown rice - but has more "substance" than traditional Jasmine rice
Guess I'll be buying a second bag this week - probably a years supply!

  • +1

Warning this is rubbish imo. Quality is much worse than restaurant quality. The medium grain and basamati version by sunrice are good though.

    • yeah, but whats the jasmine rice they use in restaurants? its definateely not this brand. totally different fragrance.

      • +1

Thai Jasmine Rice, imported from thai. in every asian grocery. i think its called diamond? or some diamond shape on the 5kg/10kg/25kg package.

      • +1

Pretty sure most Thai restaurants use the ones imported from Thailand. I asked a waitress before but forgot the brand name now.

  • Price online states save $8 ;)

  • Is jasmine better than basmati? I though basmati was the nicest.
And Thai jasmine is new to me too, so maybe that's nicer and more nutricious.

    • I prefer Jasmine over basmati for a rice which you can add it to anything and still be tasty. Basmati is pretty special for curries but.

      • Thanks. I remember basmati having a beautiful smell. Will give it a go.

    • Absolutely not. Basmati is low GI, and is very good for diabetes patients.
The texture and aroma of good basmati is fantastic.
IF you want to buy good quality basmati, go to an Indian grocery store. Coles and wollies stock the low end of basmati.
Good quality basmati is hard to get for any less that $3/kg when you buy in bulk.
