Home and Building Insurance - What Are Best Options Available?

I know this question might have been asked before but as expected, my annual premiums have gone up.

I want to have $400k building and $40k content insurance. I paid $1050 to Aami last year with $500 excess on building and $100 on content. The price this year has been jumped to $1400.

Allianz is around $1300 but the excess is $500 for both building and content.

What are best options available in the market?

  • try Coles insurance

  • I am just looking at renewing mine.
I was with Coles and have no complaints (of course, I have no claims either).
But looking around I found Budget Direct and Australia Post Insurance to both be significantly cheaper. And Australia Post comes with a bonus $100 prepaid Visa as well.
So I will probably be going with them.

    • Australia Post quote I just received online was almost double what the renewal was with Coles!

You really have to shop around, no one insurer is consistently cheaper and there are too many variables.

It's a pain in the arse but there's really no other way if you want the best value.

I'm with Coles, but only because they were the cheapest at the time and they may not be when I renew.

  • Got mine from this deal for $250 😃

I generally found coles is the cheapest and also don't cover a lot of stuff. I pick woolies one.

  • Really, you need to read the Product Disclosure Statements not just look at the premium prices. Cheap insurance is fine if nothing goes wrong, but if you need to be covered for something - as is the purpose of insurance - if your policy doesn't cover it then you have effectively thrown the cost of your policy away. All companies have plain language PDS now. It is time consuming to read and compare them, but that is what you need to do if you are planning on shopping around to find the best cover for your needs, not just looking at premium costs.

I can't say anything about the Supermarket chains' policies, but whatever you do, my advice would be not to go with Budget Direct. Their policies cover barely anything, and in the unfortunate event that you do have to make a claim, your policy will not be renewed. Have had mega bad experiences with BD. Do some searching to find out other's experiences with this organisation.

I have read others say the same thing.

  • Renewed my policy last week both home and content. Was with bank of melbourne last year and they send me a renewal notice with increase of $5/m in premium. Contacted RACV as i am with them for my car insurance. Was offered 10% discount when i called first, i hang up. Called again, was offered 20% discount, again i hang up and finally on the third call, a nice lady offered 25% discount. $275k home and $30k contents policy, monthly premium of $43. BOM was giving me $187k home and $30k contents for $48/m.

    • interesting, I used the online quote and I put im a red member, but does calling up get you up to the 25% discount by having vehicle insurance with them already? I may have to try. I don't know if it is RACV or if there is any difference by calling up though.

      • I just called up YOUI to bitch about getting a cheaper quote from RACWA for Building+Contents Insurance and YOUI matched the RACWA quote and sent me an additional $85 bonus. Altogether, they refunded me $175.
