Been looking for ages for a new tablet, wanted something with 2GB RAM and Android 5 or greater, sub $300, however the only options I could find were Imports/China tabs (Teclast, Chuwi etc) but I read too many stories about gappy screens, poor batteries and faulty headphone jacks and was concerned about warranty from OS vendors. Finally found this HP Slate 8 which ticked the boxes and is Au stock with Au warranty. Just received mine and can confirm it's a nicely put together unit, super snappy interface, excellent Wi-Fi performance, not too much foistware and, while it shipped with Android 4.4, OTA updates to 5.1 no probs. It's a 4:3 aspect ratio (not widescreen) like an Ipad Mini. About the only issues I can see is its an obscure model and not many accessories for it (can get film screen protectors but no easy to get/cheap cases) and probably unlikely to see further Android updates.
Have seen advertised elsewhere for over $500.

Oh…and it comes with a funky stylus/pen thing which I don't really care about but may excite some people.
Hello Blinky,
You could try, with reset. With the tablet in off, press the on button and button volume plus (+) at the same time by 2 or 3 seconds. Then, select … 3: wipe data/factory reset and press on button.
Thanks.
