The KD55X9300D is pretty cheap, very tempting.

  • Yes this telly(sony) is on my short list..

Do these get cheaper at xmas/boxing day or this the only chance we will have at this price?

If i buy now it will be in its box for 3 months till the house is built!

    mixo

    • Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I'd probably wait it out as deals like this will be likely to pop up again.

    • +2

The 3 months will eat into your warranty period and harder to prove DOA if you wait.

      • …and 3 months will probably end up 6 months…or more

Almost finished mine and have had a Belling Oven for a year now:()

        • well it looks like its too late..

have to wait till the next special..

        • @mixo: You can get it in store at that price m8 :)

Can someone who knows more about TVs tell me what I get for the extra 1k on the Sony? Both 4K and both HDR? Both Sony Android and WebOS have a good rep.

    • I have the LG same model but 60", assuming 55" is very similar aside from size as the model number is exactly the same. Its got very good energy rating, webOS is also easy to use with magic remote and surprisingly the speakers are half descent when comparing to other built in speakers around. $1198 is a good deal for that TV; don't forget to get vouchers from Reward Gateway if you are part of the corporate program you normally get another 5-8% off the price. Good luck.

    • +1

I haven't checked specs on either to compare, but the Sony is an upper-end model, while the LG is a lower end.

The Sony also has things like 3D and Dolby Digital Plus.

    • +4

Just briefly look at the spec:

      Feature Sony LG
      3D Active N/A
      Wifi 802.11 ac 802.11 a/b/g/n
      Bluetooth v4.1 N/A
      USB Ports 3 2
      Energy Star Rating 3.0 6.0
Estimated Yearly Electricity Use (kWh) 517.0 N/A
      • Woof, 517kWh/year means $250+ on my TOU tariff here in NSW. Is the LG better in this regard with it's 'six' stars?

Here is a review for a similar Sony International model - http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x930d

      Pros for the Sony -

Better picture quality (conbtrast and blacks)
      Lower screen reflections
      3D
Better at dealing with motion blur (120 HZ) - smoother for sports
1 more USB port, 1 more HDMI port
LG has a few reviews online (check whirlpool forums) and complaints about the panel being more prone to DSE and needing some to be replaced.

      Cons -

Sony uses 33% more energy than the LG
LG has a better remote (Smart)
LG has slightly better input lag (~30 ms better)

Overall both have pretty shitty audio so you'd want to get a home theater system for any main room. Fine for bedroom use.

I've been eying off these models as well as the Samsung KS8000 for quite a while as I'm buying a new TV in the next month. The Samsung is probably slightly better than the Sony but the cheapest it's been is ~$2600.

This Sony deal is very very tempting.

      • +5

$1000 is ALLOT OF MONEY you can almost get two LG 55" 4K's for the price of the sony.. that alone puts sony into second place no questions about it

Passive 3D is good active 3D is what killed off 3D

        • +4

Just because you can buy 2 for the price of 1, doesn't magically make them better. Cheaper doesn't mean better.

    • Personally I'd wait for the 15% eBay sale and buy the 55EG910T 55" LG OLED from TGG @ around $2.3k.. 1080p OLED > 4K LCD IMO

      • Here's a comparison if anyones interested..

Sony KD55X9300D Contrast: 2843:1, Viewing Angle: 16 Degrees, Response Time: 10.6 ms, Input Lag: 52.3 ms, 3D Type: Active

LG 55EG910T Contrast: Infinity:1, Viewing Angle: 84 Degrees, Response Time: 0.1 ms, Input Lag: 29.6 ms, 3D Type: Passive

        • With infinity contrast you can tell these figures aren't made up by someone in marketing.

        • @Diji1:

The specs above are actually as measured by rtings.com

"Each pixel can be shut off, for an absolute black (no other tech can do this, save CRT), meaning an actual infinite contrast ratio, not just marketing hype." - CNET

        • @Ryballs: Oh well there you go.

        • Is the viewing angle for an OLED better than an IPS LED?

        • @matt-ozb: yes

  • Is the LG good for console gaming ?

    • Anyone ?

      • +1

We have a non WebOS 1080p LED LG and my teens play Xbox One on it with no issues. There are usually complaints of lag between controller presses and image refresh on some tv's (especially with first person sh00ter games) - but I have had no complaints…and teens will complain if they had an inkling of a chance :)

      • Check which lg model you want on ratings mate.

        Here's a start http://www.rtings.com/tv/tests/inputs/input-lag.

Sonys tv is good but not the best for gaming.

    • +1

i use a 65" 4k LG for my xbox one and ps4.. its the best tv ive ever used in my life and still better then most in stores

      65UF850T :)

    • Definitely don't use any type of these tvs for FPS games, the input lag is just too horrendous, although im not sure about other games though, i know personally for FPS, the experience is just terrible. It would be ideal to get a monitor with low response time, like less than 5ms.

  • Sony or Lucky Goldstar?
    Which is better?

    • +2

Goldstar was junk but is a lot better than they used to be

Sony was amazing but is a lot worse than they used to be

Probably about on par today. Both make good products and junk products. Take each model on a case by case basis and it is best to see it in person in the store and judge for yourself.

      • they are number 1 in TV's now.. they beat samsung..

2016 LG OLD TV's are the best on the market hand down.. according to every single review online for the worlds best TV 2016

    • +1

I'm changing from a sony android tv to an LG E6 when the price is lower.
I don't know what other people experience with Android on Sony but mine has been completely lackluster like a cheap android phone. It lags :(
I end up just using the Nvidia shield TV.

      • +1

Happy with my 55X8500C (for $1500.)
Sure it could be a bit quicker (couldn't we all?!), and the initial firmware was buggy to the point of making it not fit for purpose, but soon (an) update(s) came out and it's smooth sailing since then.

      • +1

I find the TV (X8500C) a lot better with updates, but the Shield TV + Nexus Player are both significantly faster.

  • Is there any gift voucher / alternate way to get this LG even cheaper ?

  • Does this tv do hdr with 1000 nits or whatever they are calling it??

    mixo

  • +3

Kodi + Android TV = everything you want in a tv without the need of chromecast or another android device

    • would you be able to install any android apps like on a mobile/tablet though?

      • Not any but the ones only available for Android tv.
        Ones I use are
        Plex
Kodi (favourite, reduced my need to use plex)
        Es Explorer
        Screen mirroring

The androis start up is pretty slow takes a while to start all the apps and connect to wifi. Start up time of about 3 mins

Though I think another option would be lg tv +Nvidia Shield

        • That's not quite true, you can side-load any app with the use of ES explorer. Technically that is every app, but usability will vary.

    • True. But I find Android to be very slow or laggy compared to LG interface. ( I own both LG and Sony)

    • I had sooo much grief getting the database to sync that I gave up and am only using Plex which works great, only downside is not getting stuff marked as watched or being able to resume where I left when we go to watch crap in bed.

      • Use Plex in the bedroom then!

        • Plex is in the bedroom - upstairs has the kodi box running a tv tuner and connected to a raid. Tempted to just move it to a cupboard and run Plex off a Chromecast - only problem is the tv tuner is slow.

  • +2

When will the price go live on the LG TV?

  • Is there any proof of the LG on sale ?
The 60" is on sale on the site.

  • Hmmm tempting. Currently can access JB HIFI gift cards at 8.1% discount through my work.. (well, it's technically 9% but they charge a CC processing fee). There is a limit of $2k cards though.

    So with CC fee, I can get $2k of vouchers for $1838.20 + 198 residual = 2036.20.

  • Sony page is now gone. Was to slow myself!

  • +1

Last couple of updates have finally made the Sony Android TVs usable. I only have a 42" 1080p one and I use it mostly for Plex, but it's a great tv.

    • +1

Does it have a built in Plex player, or you have a plex-capable device attached to it?

      • Plex App for Android

        • And does it install directly from the play story without any issues?

        • Yeap nothing complicated at all involved in getting it going, just a standard download from the app store. It even pops up on your home screen suggesting episodes to watch and stuff.

  • Was gonna shop for a TV last Sunday but work held me back, lucky, LG TV is looking a good choice this Sunday!

    • and.. you never know what will be on offer next Sunday?

      • I know haha, you gotta pull the trigger someday!

  • Its a tempting offer, which one is better Samsung or LG ? I have been eyeing SAMSUNG 55"/60" (not on offer yet), believe LG is near good as Samsung ? any recommendation ?

is it good to take the plunge or wait , can price go below 1K for 55" ?

    • It's a matter of when not if, but I can't see it happening this year unless the dollar goes back up.

    • Hey fun, if you want a HDR TV the Samsung 6000/7000 Series are only 8-bit HDR Where the LG 652T is 10-bit so would buy the LG or get the Samsung 8000 which is HDR-10 Bit :)

      • Yep give it a go. I got the Sony for $2199 at local JB store (was last one - Essendon).

  • Wait for the Sony 12 days to Xmas sales in 3 months time. Going to buy the 65" or 75" UHD TV under 3K.

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/sony-bravia-75-x8500d-4k-ultr…

  • I just checked the jb hifi website for the sony and I would swear on a stack of bibles the original price was 2990 not 3190 as they have posted now..sneaky..

    mixo

p.s looks like its gone from their website

  • The original Sony X9300D 55" link is back online but the deal is now $500 off the marked price making it $2698.

    • Hmm I wonder if it's still $2198 in store today, it was yesterday

  • Phew gave me a heart attack with the LG UH652T, just bought it last week and thought I missed this even better deal.

  • Well it better be i'm going in tonite..

    • Ring first m8 to check, don't mention the online price just ask what price the TV Is in store

  • no luck at northland and preston JB-fi's..

told me to come back boxing day, didnt even want to deal on the tv. didn't even want to try to sell me a tv..retail seems to have changed, they making too much money to be chasing a sale.

If anyone is getting it for 2198 in the northern suburbs of Melbourne let me know.

Now they are just showing me the website and quoting this price.

    mixo

p.s jb preston knew of this ozbargin post!
p.s.s their webite now says 2698..changes by the minute..and this is their instore price..
