  • I read something by iflyfat CEO on news.com.au that pretty much said the same thing. Except the article was so technical and full of jargon that I gave up by the 2nd paragraph.

    • +2

They're trying to provide a value comparison, if you swapped them for QFF points for Woolies or Etihad points with Coles Flybuys.

It's not relevant if you don't care about frequent flyer points. If you don't have any points with Etihad either, then the comparison is not relevant.

      $10 Woolworths dollars = 870 QFF points.
      Each QFF point costs 1.1c.

10,000 FlyBuys Points = $50 can be swapped for 4000 Etihad Airways Points.
      Etihad points cost 1.125c each.

    • +4

Those comparisons on that article are not really of value to the average person. You have to spend over half a million dollars before those comparisons on business class flights even become applicable. It's clearly a rushed and somewhat lazy article. It would help to compare things that are actually attainable.

The only thing to take away from this is that Woolworths is now matching Coles FlyBuys 2000 points $10 credit. It's all 99% of users probably care about.

  • +7

I personally find this pretty hilarious. Most people could work out that the way they structured their rewards program was mostly just a scam to sell very specific products. Their old system was much better, and this seems like it has reverted back to it again.

  • +1

Thanks for starting the discussion post, OP. I was planning to start a discussion on the changes but I was busy yesterday.

I think some of the changes are a good idea. At least members will get something on each eligible transaction instead of spending over $100 and not getting anything in rewards if they didn't buy any orange ticket items.

I look forward to see what they are going to do with their targeted offers program

Will they also change the targeted offers to the flybuys system where offers are sent out every week or will they keep to the current system of only having targeted offers sent out once a month or so?

  • +12

The old program had a $30 minimum spend which pissed me off as I do small shops at lunch fairly often. It looks like they've got rid of that. Great!

    • +4

Yep there wasn't any incentive to scan your card for purchases under $30. And then after they changed it there was no incentive to scan unless you bought an item with 'WW dollars'.

But now they'll get us scanning more often and amass all our personal info about our shopping habits so they can launch targeted marketing campaigns at us.

      • +4

this is part of their thinking i'd say. There was no incentive at all to scan under the most recent system so they suddenly lost data on millions of small transactions, now that will come back as there is the same incentive to scan for a single item or a large shop

      • I've always assumed since I purchase with a credit card, that if I use the credit card once and scan, and use it another time and don't scan, that they would match it back to me through the credit card anyway.

        • I think privacy laws prevent them tracking your purchases via your credit card number.

  • +3

The most recent points/dollar system sucked. I started going to coles as my secondary shop (after aldi). Better "rewards".

Woolworths is closer and was only used for a small shops.

  • +1

Earn 1 point per $1 spent.

    • at Woolworths, BWS and Woolworths Caltex co-branded fuel outlets (excluding Tasmania, Star Mart and Star Shop)

    • Excludes purchases of smoking products, gift cards, mobile recharge, Woolworths Mobile, travel cards and tickets, delivery charges, internet cafes, Woolworths Flowers, Carpet Care, lottery products and purchases using Caltex Starcard.

    • +6

Excluding mobile recharge is interesting. Especially considering Coles gives you triple points on those, well, on Telstra at least.

    • +9

I am surprised it excludes mobile recharge. Coles don't have that pointless restriction, pun intended.

    • probably excludes Opal top ups as well. i used to get the $10 voucher thing now and then by topping up my Opal card with > $100, that doesnt work any more so i just settle for the discount on the woolies e-gift card and use that for opal top up.

      • +1

        excludes travel cards and tickets?

  • +8

Be interesting to see what mechanisms there will be to earn bonus points. At the moment, getting 2,000 flybuys points isn't too hard with the regular bonus point coupons email and mail to you + you sometimes get the triple point coupons on your receipt.

If Woolies don't offer as easy a way to get to 2,000, then flybuys will still be the better program.

    • I keep hearing that some people still get point coupons in hardcopy (not the email ones) but I have never received any before. Since I tend to shop instore, these would be mighty handy. Did you have to register specially for these? Thanks.

      • +1

I just keep getting them in the mail. Never had to do anything to get them. Maybe log on to your account online and check if the home address they have recorded is correct.

  • +4

This is a great move, the previous promotion felt like a scam.

It was always either "Buy this poorly discounted item that has a better alternative" or "Buy this item for 50 cents worth of credit or buy it next week and save $1 instantly!"

I received $10 off my bill once during the entire promotion and that was only because my store renovated and gave everything a new look and offered credit rewards for buying fruit and vegetables.

    • I also received $10 off once due to the fact that I won it when the scheme first launched. Had a nice surprise when 3 pizzas rang up to a total of $2.

  • +2

Thanks OP for posting. I go to the shops 2-3 times a week. But spend smaller amounts (lesser than $30 each), so actually this revamp is better for me than both the last 2 schemes. At least, I will start earning some points.

  • +1

Damn. My preference is Qantas points and under the new scheme $1 spent = 0.435 Qantas points. Or $2.30 per Qantas point.
Certainly nowhere near as good as the old Qantas rate of $1 spent = 1 Qantas point above $30 (I do one big weekly shop).
I left Woolies and went to Coles once they dropped Qantas points because Woolies just is not up to par with Coles as far as the stores and service goes. I only shopped there for points and got a good amount per year.

Let's see how the targeted offers compare, Coles Flybuys points targeted offers are fairly decent and regular. Let's see if Woolies do the same. That is what it will boil down to now for me.

  • +4

So like basically exactly the same as flybuys.

  • +1

    What will happen next week?
Do we lose our Woolworths Dollars. I have $20 on two cards. Better spend this week unless someone knows.

    • +2

You will still be able to use your $20 Woolworths dollars after the changeover dates. Any credits, either full or partial will be converted over and can be used after 31 August.

      • Will they automatically convert to $10 off your shop and in multiples of $10 like the current wwd scheme?

ie. Currently if you had $40wwd and spent $45 all you would have to chip in is $5

        • +1

As far as I know this will be the case but I guess we'll find out more after August 31.

I'm hoping they still count the $10 off or whichever amount is applicable as a payment method rather than a discount. The current practice is to use it as a payment method. This makes it easier to qualify for the relevant targeted offer amount.

        • According to this

1.The current Woolworths Dollars currency is being changed to Woolworths points. Existing Woolworths Dollar balances will be automatically converted to the equivalent points value next week.

          3. If you do nothing, your Woolworths points will go towards a discount on your shopping at checkout – each point is worth 0.5c (this is the same as flybuys, by the way).

So, pointscrazy, it looks like what you are hoping for.

    • +2

They'll convert to the point equiv.

  • +1

Finally I will be able to accumulate something when I scan.

  • So spend $2000 to get $10 back or effectively a 0.005% discount. FlyBuys is similar but due to the bonus points on certain products and the ability to earn more points through the FlyBuys credit card etc its a lot easier to earn the points. For me I end up getting on average a 0.5% discount which is 10 times better. Wonder if woollies will launch a credit card in partnership with a major bank specifically for this new rewards program.

    • +3

$10 back on $2000 spend is 0.5%. But quite right, due to bonus points etc, it is possible to earn much more than that from the Flybuy Coles program.

      • Gee, what happened to my numbers there.

        • +3

Happens to all of us, sometimes :-)

  • +1

This is the best reward system for a long time. I shop at Woolworth's heaps more than Coles but got five times the amount of rewards from Coles shopping aka flybuys dollars.

  • +2

Loyalty schemes aside, a MAJOR plus when shopping Woolies is the effective 5% off when using discount gift cards, readily available from Entertainment Book, Cash Rewards, Groupon, RACV, etc.

The other big plus is 5% off Woolies petrol.

With $5 back on $100 spend, this is an order of magnitude better than the standard FlyBuys earn rate of 0.5%.

And of course, why not get the benefits of both?

    • Plus in my area the woolies(caltex) petrol is cheaper than coles(shell) making it even more valuable. I end up saving 10-12c extra. (4 spend 30, 4 spend $5 instore, 2-4 already lower prices)

  • +3

This cannot be a bad thing considering the past program gave you 1 miserable QFF point for every $30 spent. So now they match FlyBuys but I challenge Woollies to follow Coles by way of online coupons and extra points bonuses : Triple points Activate on your biggest shopping this week/ spend $120 get 1000/2000 bonus points/ or those member coupons that come in the mail where you buy certain Coles products and get bonus 150 pts etc. It does not take long to get to 2000 points and $10 off shopping esp when filing up petrol also gives 1 pt per $ spent. It's amazing how fast one gets to 2000 points with Coles FlyBuys so how about it, Woollies?

  • Coles has so far offered $50 off after 4x$90 shops, 3 times, Woolies will never be able to offer something like this. Above change is definitely much better.

    • +1

Sounds like they trained you up to that shopping level. My offer is $50 for 4x$50, which I have no intention of taking up. Was good when they gave me $4 off $20 which I used on Opal top up.

    • +1

They offered me $50 off as well, but I only had to spend $50 x4 weeks.

Woolworths offered me - spend $30 get $5 off, spend $40 get $10 off, spend $50 get $15 off. This was over 3 weeks and the saving was instant. Never got anything like that from Coles.

  • Is it worth covering 2000 points to 870 QF points or more worth to convert to $10 off ?

    • +1
    • +1

If you can redeem more than $10 worth of value in flights/upgrades etc for 870 points then it is worth converting to QFF points.

    • If transferring to QF points, it is worth about 1.15c per point.
OZB members often value FF points at 1c or more.
So it really depends on whether you redeem flights/upgrades and can see value in this, or prefer cash rewards.

  • Yeah i would use the points for flights redemption. Just feels like it's alot of money( $2000)for only 870 points

    • +1

If you're careful, you won't have to spend $2000 to get 870 points. You might be lucky enough to get a targeted offer which offers you 2000 Woolworths Points just for spending $50.

      • Staff at my local store was saying to me they will be bringing in offers, and to watch out for them in the coming days. Good times, hopefully … :-)

  • Today is the lastday to opt in for the QF points. If you opt in do toy still get a choice of QF points or dollars or once you opt in that's it ypu only get QF points?

  • +1
Merged from Woolies New Super Deal

Am I reading this right? I must be hallucinating but it looks clear enough on the pamphlet I am reading from. "Earn a point for every dollar you spend". "2000 points = $10 off a future shop".

Does that mean spend $2000 to get $10 off? I'm more used to spend $50 get $10 off or even better. $2000 to get $10- that is insane. My maths must be wrong.

    • They are just bringing their rewards system to be inline with Coles flybuys. I am sure you will still get your spend $50 get $10 off offers once in a while like before.

    • Correct. But better than spending about $5000 and getting $2.50 reward dollars. That's how this year panned out for me so far at Woolies!!

  • Did anyone switch their Woolworths Rewards account to Qantas points?

I switched mine and just found out from Woolies that it takes at least 3.5 MONTHS until they will transfer points to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account!! I find it ridiculous that we have to wait that long without being able to do anything with our points! BEWARE to anyone else who is considering this and may make an assumption that points would be received within a week, or even a month. It's not the case.

Here's a copy of the email I received from Woolies yesterday showing that my points will be transferred on the 15th of December 2016:
    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/133982/42137/wer.jpg

Note that I also received an email from Qantas which even more clearly said the same and confirmed Woolies will only transfer points once every 3 months (or whenever they feel like). The following text was in the email from Qantas:

" ^ To earn Qantas Points with Woolworths, you must be a member of Woolworths Rewards, link your Qantas Frequent Flyer number to your Woolworths Rewards account and opt in to convert your Woolworths Dollars to Qantas Points. Every 10 Woolworths Dollars earned will be converted to 870 Qantas Points. Woolworths Dollars earned in a member's Woolworths Rewards account will be saved and converted to Qantas Points every three months (or as otherwise advised by Woolworths). The first conversion by Woolworths will occur on 15 December 2016. Please allow up to 7 days for Qantas Points to appear in your Qantas Frequent Flyer Account. Woolworths Rewards is not available in Tasmania."

    • Yep hopefully lots of people kick up a stink…

Woolies you need to learn ways of pleasing customers instead of pissing them off :(
