Yan Yan Meiji Vanilla (Asian Snack) - $0.30 @ Coles [Burwood, NSW only?]

460

Asian snack that some of us Asians (honkies?) here might be familiar with?
This was seen at Burwood NSW Coles earlier today and there were about 15 left on the shelf. Not sure if it's available in other stores. Don't know when the deal ends either.

Other flavours were scanning at their regular price (I tried).

My first time trying this flavour and I found it pretty nice. I normally stick to Chocolate!

Expiry date on the bottom of the container says 24/08/2016. I assume given the nature of these products, it is a "Best Before" and not a "Use By". This would explain the cheap price!

    Ah yes, childhood…

  • Expiry date?

    • Don't know when the deal ends either.

      Sorry :(

      • Expiry date of product

        • +2

          Oh! Sorry

          24 August 2016.

Given the nature of these products I assume it's a best before? Will add this to description.

      • I think they were wondering the expiry date of the product, rather than the deal xD

        EDIT: xD

  • HOLY COW ! I'd buy trays of the chocolate ones and have myself a binge ahaha

You try to tell your Asian mother that this can't be eaten on August 25 and she will give you hell with a chopstick.

caning with a feather duster my friend

is the real way of doing it

      • +1

also sandals, half pair of shoes, belt, wooden stick, ruler, rubber band, broom, basically anything in the house. I was a menace back then

Nah, I turned out all right despite all the smacking :)

        • +2

I never understood the "wooden spoon" threat that I kept hearing from sources other than my mother. Turns out, the wooden spoon is pretty much the only thing she didn't beat me with! The feather duster in our household was a sh1tty pink synthetic version of the one pictured, but it had a thin cane beating-end that hurt like h3ll!

I turned out alright <click> turned out alright <click> turned out alright <click> turned out alright <click> too… dunno what folks are getting so worked up about <click> worked up about <click> worked up about <click> !

"Best Before" means that on the date after, it will just be "Better". :P

  • Who you calling honkies?! Lol

    • Honkies - who else? ;)

      • +1

Don't gimme no jive, honkie! ;)

        • Actually, I'd have said 'honkie' was a black-British-people's pejorative reference to white people (I'm thinking of that British sitcom "Love Thy Neighbour" - pretty seriously offensive stuff by contemporary standards - in which the black guy always called the white guy 'honkie' with what I took to be offensive intent!)

I'd call Hong Kong Chinese folks 'hongkies' - friendly/affectionate, no offense intended - not 'honkies'.

@douglasb: Well, since honkie & hongkie are essentially homophones in colloquial Aussie English, that makes you a homophonophobe.

        • @douglasb: Whoops. It was just a typo. Didn't know it had to have a g hahaha

        • +1

@douglasb: its a US term for a white person. Apparently the white johns used to beep their horns when cruising for working girls in Black areas. Either that or its a reference to Hungarians, being as white as any other white person I guess.

        • I thought honkie would still be correct for a Hong Kong person. There used to be travel ads advertising trips to "Honkers" for shopping holidays.

        • @illumination: hang on just realised. I can't call this a typo because it wasn't a typing error. It was a spello.

          @kiitos:
But I guess it could be argued that that's referring to the city/place as opposed to the people? But I'd imagine consistency wise either both should have a "g" or both shouldn't.

  • Whats a honkie??

    • -1

Slang for a "Hong Kong" person

      From wikipedia:

"Honky (also spelled honkie or sometimes honkey) is mainly a derogatory word for white people, predominantly heard in the United States. The first recorded use of honky in this context may date back to 1946, although the use of "Honky Tonk" occurred in films well before that time.[1] The exact origins of the word are generally unknown and postulations about the subject vary."

      • +2

Yeah I was thinking White ass Honkie

        • Correct! I would've also accepted 'whitey' or 'cracker'.

  • Good price but I don't see this meeting OzB minimum quantity of 10. I can see 8 only

  • Oh wow… quite a few more flavours than what my local Coles stores stock. Mine only has the chocolate :(

Also, is that Pocky I see on the left? I'm jealous. My store doesn't have that :(

    • +1

      Yep Pocky!
Just saw that you're in Perth. Makes sense :P

  • What are the ingredients? Vegetarian friendly?

    • +2

There's nothing friendly about vegetarians IME…

      • Cool.. What's IME?

  • Honkies is an old insult to a white people, jive turkey! :D

  • Made in Japan and its a Japanese brand!

  • safe to eat?

    • Nope. Keep it under your sink next to the Jiff and Windex

    • +2

Nah. It's labelled as a food for no reason

  • Yan Yan, dip dip, yum yum!

  • So has anyone else seen this at any other store?

  • +1

Was there not long ago and saw none left on the shelf so marked as expired. And no one has said they've seen it at any other store so I assume it was a Burwood NSW Coles exclusive! Got ozbargained good!

    • +1
