Unmetered streaming just about trumps everything for me when looking for a "streaming" service

      • You can sync your music over wifi pretty easily.

        • +6

Similarly - if I wanted to manually manage music, I'd prefer to buy, for streaming I want to be anywhere, anytime, and just decide to want to listen to something, and there it is, not having to worry about my data usage.

        • +5

Haha there's also the perks of just asking Siri to play any song that comes to mind whilst driving.

I have 20GB on a BYO Plan but this definitely will make downgrading the data when I recontract on the new iPhone more enticing since I won't have to care about streaming through Apple Music.

      • -2

And the quality of the audio. Spotify is terrible in comparison! (even HQ doesn't trump iTunes Plus)

        • +2

Surely the comparison is between paid Spotify and paid Apple Music? In which case, they are pretty much the same or Spotify slightly better:

          http://www.cnet.com/au/news/apple-music-vs-spotify-is-there-…

        • -7

@dazweeja: Read many reviews. Varying in detail, but the proof is in the waveforms. I managed to find an article with proper comparisons, tbh Spotify sounds like ass. Not wanting to sound like one myself, but I wouldn't trust cnet over my audio degree

        • +12

          @aryan12:

You have an audio degree and you think you can judge the quality of a codec just by looking at the waveforms? All those years of psychoacoustic research in codec development wasted, they could have just looked at the waveforms!

        • @dazweeja: And the last 9 years of my life. Whatever. Not going to waste my time, troll away.

      • MP3 trumps all.

    • +4

I've been on AM for 4 months now, i'm genuinely stunned how quick stuff loads. Mind you i'm always in full reception 4g zones

      • I get full reception in all 4 G zones too bro. Also quick to load…

    • i use apple music on the Optus Network and i have not noticed any lagging. If you experience lagging, why wouldn't you just download it locally through Apple Music?

  • +8

How about unmetered streaming for netflix, that would be a game changer.

    • +4

      Id chromecast up hard lol

    • Netflix wont do it anymore. They came out and said they regretted the agreement with Optus before it even rolled out. Unmetered Netflix isnt even for mobile though….that would be amazing. I'd take unmetered music over video anyday!

  • +1

Bargain is in the eye of the beholder

    • +1

      Until JV enters the fray.

  • I currently stream music with Google Play Music, guess i'll miss out?

    • +1

Money talks. Apple coughed up the cash (presumably).

      • +2

yea, I wonder what deal has been made..

    • You can still go on optus. I use play music myself and have strongly considered that option but can't fork out 40 a month myself for an arguably inferior network since I'm currently on telstra.

      • But that is Optus Prepaid right? Not available for Postpaid.

        • I'm actually not sure. Can't find it on their site.

        • @ChillBro: yeah I think it's only for optus prepaid customers. No love for post paid.

      • My definition of "inferior" would reference network reliability, outtages and performance. I know where I'd rather be spending my money… Optus 4G+ in south and central Brisbane has proven more reliable than Telstra ever did. Don't regret jumping ship after all their issues.

        • +6

Ok but for the majority of the country Telstra coverage is much better than Optus'

        • +3

Wouldn't be touching optus if you want reliable coverage say 60km from the brisbane cbd…

        • @benjamin92: I have both an Optus iPhone (work) and Telstra iPhone (personal)
South brisbane, especially coopers plans area Optus is a better connection and there is broad daylight to Telstra, which struggles even with voice.

Anywhere out of that area though and Telstra wins. Near PA I get about 45 Mbps on Optus and 185 Mbps on Telstra. And if I am in gulf country, or anywhere more than (any) town limits in the rural areas, it is Telstra or nothing.

        • @Devils Advocate: Agree! Made the switch from Optus to Telstra last year and never looked back. In the areas I frequent, it's Voda or Telstra. Usain Bolt should advertise for Telstra if you're talking about speed. The one time I randomly speedtested Telstra 190mbps while waiting in Brisbane apple store was mind blowing. I thought I was connected to wifi, but I wasn't.

My family complains how that 5GB data from Optus can't be utilized. I now tether mine anywhere we go.

  • I dont think they would change my decision to leave apple music.
Unmetered is pretty useless when the app keeps crashing or it just comes up with an error saying unknown media.
I made the switch to spotify and its pretty good.

    • +1

out of interest, which ecosystem are you in? iOS or Android

      • iOS

        • and yet the android version runs no problems whatsoever on mine…

        • @shuckeru: apple music?

Wow i just realized i made a huge typo.
I meant the unmetered would not change my decision to go back to apple music.
          Spotify is way better.

        • @Hirolol: yes apple music. i like how integrated it is to the phone. spotify doesn't recognise my bluetooth controls by default. apple music on the other hand does, and i don't even need to launch the app to get it to start playing music.

  • can android device plays apple music?

    • +1

      Yes.

      • thanks

        • It's hard to imagine it but yes it can

  • +2

Does this only apply to Apple Music subscriptions billed directly by Telstra?

  • +4

Why is free Netflix and Stan? Telstra is behind Presto.

    • I agree, it's weird. I got a 6 months free subscription from Telstra a month ago from a deal posted here on ozbargain. Can't find the deal anymore though

    • why not? lol more for the user i guess….its only 3months anyway

  • +3

Finally a decent replacement for MOG :)

    • I still have the app on my phone :)

  • +4

telstra making it hard for me to leave in 3 months :S

  • +17

Telstra knows that in September when the new iPhone is out a lot of the customers are out of contract so they are putting up all these deals to keep you with them and to get you to sign up to another new contract. It's a very smart move by them.

  • This is excellent OP. Thanks so much for sharing.

  • +1

Where on the Telstra link does it say post paid plans valued over $95? I think this is open for all post paid plans

  • I wonder if this replaces the double data (night data) deal for post paid users as that expires on the 22nd of August

    • Night data is redundant and a gimmick at least to me.

    • +1

      You meant prepaid I presume?

  • +3

    I pay Telstra $80 a month

But seriously the extra value of Apple Music and this will make it worthwhile

After all, my 2 year old demand wiggles on the fly

It will easily clock a few hundred Meg per session

  • Thanks for sharing!!! Unlimited Apple Music!!

    • -1

It sounds to me like it means the data is not counted as download, not that the subscription to Apple Music is included.

  • +1

Probably a silly question but would the free data extend to podcasts? Find myself using podcasts a bit more these days than Apple Music but wasn't sure if it would be the same servers and therefore free data?

    • Podcasts data isn't hosted by Apple, Apple just points you to the relevant private podcast server.

      • +1

Thanks for the clarification. Most of my podcasts are automatically downloaded on wifi anyway so not a huge issue just wasn't sure if Apple hosted the data or not. Apple Music very nice to have anyway.

  • sweet!!!
ill chat with live chat on tuesday to have this added on.

    • Did you end up getting it added on?

      • +1

My apologies but it's only available on our new sets of plans.
Well, we are strictly following the main business rule of this offer. Again, it's only available on the NEW Plans.
If I can give that to you now, I definitely would but the system won't allow me as it will detect that your plan is not eligible.

Pretty negitive responses as ive had new customer offers added onto my account heaps of times….
Ill contact their FB team and they will make it happen.

        • I just got off chat with them, I recently recontracted (but before the 3 month offer was available), the person I spoke to said they've forwarded the request on to the 'technical' team and will get the full 3 month offer to present in the Telstra TV+ app.

        • @matthewk85:
I got a flat out "nope" to added it onto my current plan.

  • This is awesome. Apple Music was horrid when it first came out but it's a lot better now and with $5.99 student subs there's no reason to touch Spotify anymore.

    • +1

I do hope however once Apple inserts the last nail into Spotify's coffin that Apple Music rates won't start rising…

      • +3

I don't think Spotify is going away any time soon, which is a good thing. Competition drives innovation. The one thing I really liked about Spotify that Apple Music still doesn't do is let you select multiple songs from the Top Hits and add them to a playlist.

        • These things are true. However one day Spotify will have to make a profit. If it keeps running at a loss it will run out of invester cash and then no more Spotify.

      • What's so much better about AM over Spotify?

        • -1

It's cheaper (at least for students and Telstra customers)

        • +1

          @kheob:

Ah ok. Normal prices are the same though. I've been trying it out for the past hour. I like the suggestions it's offering me, but Spotify still feels more solid and plays music quicker.

Aussies also admit to streaming in the bath, when camping, in a row boat, at weddings and even hiding in cupboards at work.
And we’re getting a little distracted with one in 10 confessing to missing work, walking into something or burning the dinner when streaming.

    Damn they doin research.

    • I tried streaming in the shower when no one was around, but never in the bath!

      • +4

Yeh they got me! I was havin a shower in my rowboat when I got too distracted and crashed into a wedding!

  • -5

You'd have had to have been a bad person in your last life to end up using Telstra and Apple Music in this life.

    • +5

Says the person that probably never leaves the 4 walls of a city.

  • Spotify > google music > apple music

Streaming no big deal when syncing over wifi is so easy.

    • It is if you don't have a big GB phone.

    • +1

I use Google Music everyday and it's an utter piece of garbage. The only reason that I use it is cos it's free (thanks to it billing my Telstra pre-paid account).

      • Maybe but it comes with youtube red… More than apple offers.

I personally pay for Spotify over free apple music or google music because of Spotify connect and the curated hit list playlist from triple.j

      • I'm curious as to what you dislike?

        • It's not user-friendly. Especially the mobile app. Spotify is the benchmark.

      • I use Google Music everyday and it's an utter piece of garbage. The only reason that I use it is cos it's free (thanks to it billing my Telstra pre-paid account).

Am I missing something on my prepaid account… Free Google Music on Prepaid? how come it is free…

        • Carrier billing on Google Play store.

        • @Jad: OIC, ta… im trying to do that for pia

  • Does this apply for existing customers too?

  • Signed up for a $40/mo Telstra plan online to take advantage of this, provided drivers license and CC details.

I've now been informed they want me to go to a Telstra store and provide 100 points of ID, proof of address, and a 3 month bank statement.

Is this normal? I can't remember ever having to go to this much trouble for a phone contract before.

    • +1

It's incredibly annoying. I did what you said and a month later my service was cut off, just before Christmas, with no warning.

After a few days of back and forth, it was discovered that when I supplied those to the Telstra representative, he didn't lodge them in the system correctly or anything.

Anyway, I used my OzBargain skills and got 3 months bills for free for the inconvenience, on top of having the first 2 months free anyway I think it was. Essentially, I got a 12 month BYO contract with 7.5GB of data for $50 but with the discounts, it ends up being around $29 p/m for the life of the contract, lol

  • +1

Interesting whether unmetered Apple Music is applicable to Telstra prepaid customers as well…

  • Does this include business plans as well?

  • +1

do we need to apply or it would start automatically?

    • Has anyone worked out how to activate this? The Telstra TV app is offering just one month for each service

      • Spent about 30 minutes in their chat. They were able to set up the presto and bigpond credits. They'll email me Stan and Netflix vouchers. The rep was friendly but seemed very confused about the whole thing
