Compact Tablet

Hi,

I'm looking for a compact Android tablet such as the Galaxy Tab S 8inch.

Needs to be reasonably fast with a full HD screen or better. Basically used to watch movies.

I prefer to buy locally as I'm going overseas in a fortnight and will like to take it with me, bonus for TRS.

There's an eBay sale at the moment but couldn't find anything yet.

OK, please let me know and thanks in Advance.

  • I'd suggest this: http://www.expansys.com.au/xiaomi-mipad-2-unlocked-2g-16gb-s…
This is the best I can think of, if you're looking for something cheap and good.

These guys delivery really quickly too. Spend a bit more, get it up to $300, and you get free shipping. Since you're pressed for time, best to ask them how quick it will be do get it delivered.

These guys also deliver quite quick as well.

And no, I don't think you can get these locally. You could try.

      Thanks,

      I'll look at it.

The issue is now shipping as I need it by the end of the month.

I've never used Xiaomi tablets before, only their powerbanks, but the build quality looks good.

    • I was considering the Xiaomi until I realised it doesn't have any expandable memory slots!

      • A bit of a show stopper, what about the 64gb version? (I couldn't work out if the 64 was dual boot or just Windows, any ideas ?

        • I don't think it's dual boot, but you can get an Android OS of the 64gb version.

Even 64gb isn't really enough today, needs to be at least 128gb if non expandable.

128gb micro SD cards are cheap as chips. $40 these days, so there's no excuse not to have at least 128gb if non expandable.

The reason why I need more than 16gb (or 64) is because the OS takes up some room and I want to load up the tablet with movies for the kids when we go on holiday.

        • @JB1: Bit the bullet and picked up the 64gb, Android,https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/261953

    I would recommend this one
    http://www.sony.com.au/product/sgp611a1

It says $499 now, but it's been on sale a few times recently for $299. I'm not sure when the next sale would be though (on the sony website).

If you can find it for a good price elsewhere, it's a great tablet.

    • At $299 it's not a bad price for the specs, but not at $499.

What concerns me about Sony is their updates, specifically the lack of with older products.

Even the current tablet on sale today runs Google™ Android™ 4.4 (KitKat)!!!! There have been 2 new Android operating systems released since KitKat.

      • The tablet was actually released a little while ago but the specifications are still pretty good today.

Sony released the Marshmallow update for this particular model in April this year, so if I'm not wrong, it should advise of an update after switching it on for the first time.

AFAIK, Sony is not releasing anymore tablets after this one and the Z4 tablet.

At $499, it is a bit steep.

      • I've read articles where it isn't all that important since KitKat to have the latest version these days. All the security updates are pushed out by Google Play Services because Google got quite pissed that phone makers were just not rolling updates out fast enough.

I don't know how you'd feel about that, but I still think that's a bit rubbish. I'd love for my phones and tablets to have the latest version. I believe EVERY phone maker should give users the option to wipe their phones and install pure Android on their phones, with just the right drivers. Just have the option to install that or the original OS. Then let Google handle the updates.

        If I was a phone maker, I'd do that. I'm not. I'm just a 9 to 5 grub.

I agree (separating hardware and OS).

That's why I was a fan of my Nexus 5. Purely Android and no bloatware.
