Not sure of your requirement. If its for basic home use, Macbook is worthy of a look.
http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/macbook-12-…. Does works well for home photo editing.

  • I've just been helping my girlfriend look for a new laptop. We ended up getting an Acer Nitro VN7-572G-75AJ from MSY (msy.com.au) for $1099. The same laptop is currently listed for $1059. Other laptops with similar specs that she found cost $300-400 more. She is very happy with it but her needs may be different fom yours so this might not be the best option for you.

    Acer Nitro VN7-572G-75AJ specs
    CPU: Intel 6th Gen. Core i7-6500U 2.5GHz(Turbo 3.1GHz)
    OS: Windows 10 Home 64bit
    RAM: 8GB RAM
    HDD: 1TB SATA
Graphic: Nvidia GT945M Graphics 2GB Dedicated VGA
    Screen: 15.6”FHD IPS(1920x1080) LED Screen
    1yr WarrantyDVD Writer USB3HDMI
    Wifi 11N *Webcam,Spk,MicCard Reader *2.40kg

I'll let you do your own comparison as only you know what you're going to use this laptop for and what specifications/features are most important to you.

    Good luck with your search!!

If you're going to pay $1399.

I would go for the Nitro VN7-572G-76UW from MSY.

A straight comparison on the two (brackets are specs for the nitro):

      • same price
      • i5 6300 (i7 6700)
      • 16GB ram (16 GB ram)
      • 256 SSD (128 SSD + 2TB SATA)
      • M1000M graphics card (GTX950M)

And the rest are pretty much the same/not worth mentioning.

All up, the Acer beats in every category - you might want to think about the hard drive if you're is gonna install large programs (think games) on the machine, otherwise, the extra 2TB SATA will be perfect to put photos and videos into.

      • Great suggestion, although currently out of stock on MSY!

I'd get a Macbook for that money.

For similar specs and screen size…macbook is $3,099 to start

I'll get a gaming PC instead thanks

        Yeah completely different things.

If you want a laptop for casual usage (not gaming), a $1400 Macbook is a great computer.

To draw an analogy, the OP has asked for hamburger. I'm recommending a steak sandwich and you are telling him to buy a case of Redbull.

  • Thanks very much for the suggestions so far everyone.

I should have added to my original post that I'm after something more suitable for gaming and art (Windows based).

    Keep the suggestions flowing!

    :)

    • MSY has a nice range to choose from.

If you game and art (photoshop?) - you would want an i7 processor or at least a top end i5 + GTX960M or better graphics card.

EDIT: 950M is fine as well if you only play casual games or older games (dota, league of legends, cs etc etc)

      http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-950M.138026.… (games at the bottom)

With the hard drive and ram…ideally you want SSD + 16GB since that would benefit editing tasks; but then 8GB is perfectly usable as well.

The Dell precision is a mobile workstation — typically they are very grunty and can handle a lot thrown at it.

The Core i5-6300 HQ equipped in this machine is a QUAD core as opposed to a dual core (will run far better than a i5-6300U) and it is an energy sucker… will not result in long battery life, and because of the active cooling it needs, it could run slightly noisy. In return you will have a processor that can handle just about anything.

The Quadro equipped in that has roughly the performance of a GTX950M, which is a middle-of-the-road GPU. Not fast by any means but not a slouch either.

Overall it's not a bad choice for 3d CAD work and computer-generated work (e.g Autodesk Maya, and Blender) that actually requires workstation graphics. You might need to check if the software you run is compatible with Nvidia Quadro, before buying.

  • I bought this one over the weekend, it's $1288 down to $1088. Still i5, a bit lower in other specs but good overall. Hope it helps.
