  • Start printing before the world+dog changes copyright laws to include shapes & designs to ~100yrs!

Because copyright laws have always been effective in changing people's behavior…

  • I really want to sink my teeth into a 3D printer but there is so many in the market and its hard to tell what is good. I'm also not that keen on building one myself. I could never put together lego.

This one comes mainly assembled, check out the assembly video here: https://youtu.be/chFmgF8pbgM

This is a clone of a known printer. It's pretty much identical to the Aldi cocoon Create which is a clone of the Wanhao i3 Duplicator https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/233946

      • A small amount of assembly is not a problem. Any experience in using this ?

        • Nope, I only just ordered mine today. I missed out on the first pre-order and they were messing about with the price for a while so I held back till now. It has sounded pretty promising from what I read around the place. There's a support site and the manual looks pretty good too. So even if you are not the hands on type there should be plenty of documentation to follow if/when stuff gos wrong

  • Pretty tempting… Anyone know if its worth spending more on the other kits worth around $600-800?

    • Depends on the kit. It'd beat a printrbot metal for example which are usually that price.

  • I recently bought 4 from Cocoon directly for this price. Compared to UP 3D printers, these are harder to setup and harder to print consistently. STL files need to be converted to gcode using Cura or similar with some required software tweaking (adds to the complication).

Good for a first printer though.

    • How much are the UP printers though for comparison?

      • +$1-$2k

        • Cheers, You were lucky getting some stock direct from cocoon. A work mate contacted them last week and they put him on a waiting list.

        • +1

I'm not saying these Cocoon printers are useless but don't expect easy street or super quality.

Great quality printer - amazing value for the price and can easily beat $700+ printers. The steel filament spool is nice, the direct drive extruder is nice if you want to move to more flexible filaments in the future.

This is the same one that was sold through ALDI, just rebranded.

The real name for it is an Wanhao v2.1 i3 Duplicator.

Even overseas, there is no cheaper price available (and that's excluding shipping fees).

Recommend buying a 1kg reel of filament from anywhere (PLA 1.75mm will do), because the provided ones are listed as 3 metre/10ft samples that you will use quickly.

In terms of ease of construction, it's not ready out of the box, but as far as possible - people have been printing 30 minutes from unboxing it.

    • Any recommendations on good priced filament? Think i might buy this printer

      • I havn't tried all of the filament places around, but I've tried a bunch for the local hackerspace and myself. Chinese stuff had variences in thickness and I got sick of needing to remeasure it all the time.

I've got about 10 reels so far from these people: http://blueprinted.com.au/ and they have been pretty good.

I recommend the 1.75mm PLA for this printer to start with - if you get a few then you get choices of colours to print. For some reason, the brightness of the colour affects printing quality slightly - so white is easiest, black is slightly more brittle. So, pick some bright colours to start with!

      • If your getting a couple spools it could be cost effective to try here https://www.cocooncreate.com.au/store/ if you follow the supply chain back you'll find they are the same people who do the balco units so if the filament makes a mess of the printer it should be easier to make a warranty claim. Oddly balco's website which is a clone of cocoons is a little more expensive.

    • Unfortunately my printer has already failed… Had 2 pretty good prints but after setting it to pre heat for the 3rd i came back to it and it was off. Now wont turn on at all. Checked the fuse on the back of the control box and it seemed okay, Any ideas on what else i could check?

  • Jumped on this! Great deal :)

  • Question for those who already have 3d printers. Do people have their printers in the house (say office/hobby room) or is the smell of melting plastic mean that they are better suited in the garage or somewhere with good ventilation?

  • Gas a anyone got shipping notification?

    • Paid on the 11th, Tracking says it was shipped on the 12th but still waiting on final delivery. If you ordered on the Friday you probably will get tracking details later today.

      • I've been informed via eBay message: "Our warehouse has advised that your order has been slightly delayed and is currently expected to ship within 24-48 hours."

        • Bugger, They still list as over 10 in stock on Ebay so it shouldn't be a stock issue at least. Here's hoping it get's to you soon. I'm waiting still on delivery but I'm in Rural Tasmania so I always expect an extra couple days delay myself.

    • I got mine today, ordered on Friday. Tracking info never worked until after i actually received it

      • Yeah mine arrived yesterday, Was impressed how quick it was to get up and running. Half an hour from opening the box to printing the M3 Thumbscrew that was pre loaded on the SD card.

        • Mine arrived and failed yesterday… turned off mid preheat and wont turn back on. Now i have to send it to Bayswater and wait up to 5+ days for them to test and fix/replace. Other than that it was working great really quickly.

        • @thesab: Bugger, I guess there is a pretty big curve on these things. At least it happened strait up. Let us know how the returns process goes. Best of luck.

        • @Insidious: Its been sent back today. Supposedly a wiring fault from the factory. PSU and PCB have been replaced

        • @thesab: Fingers crossed that the last of your issues, did you return via kogan/dicksmith or contact balco/cocoon create/winplus directly?

        • +1

@Insidious: I originally contacted Dick Smith through the help centre on their website but they directed my straight to Balco support (winplus)

      • I received a message this morning from Australia Post. Mine is waiting for me to pick up my my local post office. (Apparently my parcel locker was full).

      • Got mine monday.

Plugged in and turned on, made a pop sound and now doesnt turn on anymore. Doesnt seem like very good quality assurance.

Also, I took out the fuse from the power supply and it wasn't even blown. So something inside just blew instead.

        • Sounds like what mine did, fuse was fine. Sent mine off with Aus post on Saturday and currently tracking is still not active… no idea where it is.

        • It sucks that you guys are having issues with your machines. But I've had mine running since 18 Aug without issue. Interestingly my machine appeared to have been tested before packaging. It had a little bit of orange filament in the tip and the machine showed it'd been running for 1:01. Did anyone else notice this when they unpackaged their machines? Or was this just my one?

        • @bluechan: Yeah mine had green filament in it, Also have had no issues at all and have been really impressed with quality overall. It is a little worrying to hear people have had them die but I guess there is going to be a steep bathtub curve for a product like these. e.g. it will die really quick or last for ages.
