Comprehensive Car Insurance Choices - Opinions/Experiences Please!

Hi guys, I'm about to renew my comprehensive insurance and as always the choices are many!
My current insurer is AAMI and I can't really comment on their service as all they've ever done is take my premiums and send me renewal notices.
I've shopped around online and compiled a list of several, with different excess options and premiums and plugged it into a spreadsheet to compare.

I'm leaning towards QBE with the assigned value of $14,100 for $816.85 - seems to be a reasonable price for a known insurer. But the Auspost deal is very tempting..

Any comments and experiences will be much appreciated!

  • Having seen the linked image and given your usage of the insurance, I'd lean towards AusPost as well. Seems like a great offer!

  • What about trying YOUI, Progressive, Woolworths and Coles?

Stay away from Youi. Aggressive sales people, poor claim handling, and high pricing. I had a couple of claims with them, and it took 9 months to get them to sort one of them and the other one they never actually sorted out at all - the one repairer option was always too busy.

      • I would also avoid them. I found their sales methods objectionable. Irony is I'm looking at a youi ad to the right of screen as I type this…

I recommend you check with your health insurer, as many white-label other products at a discount. I've been with Bupa for 4 or 5 years(which is a CGU product I think), and every time I shop around, they come out far cheaper.

  • We have just gone to Coles for the first time.

2016 Hyundai Sonata Active $610, market value, $450 excess plus added the windscreen option.
    Both drivers over 25.

Way cheaper than previous SGIC cover.

    • I think you got much better price than me….

For me 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe 4d Wagon
      Its showing $481
      Includes 10% online discount
      Includes 5% flybuys discount
      Market value
      excess $800
      Both drivers over 30.

  • I use Budget Direct for 2016 Hyundai Tuscon for $70 per month.

    • I might looking into Budget as i'm currently on their health insurance

how's your Tucson? i'm currently looking at the Santa Fe highlander

  • I've tried several others.
    - Coles won't insure my car..
    - Woolworths are about the same as Budget Direct and Auspost.
    - YouI are WAY expensive = they don't want to insure my car.
    - Progressive are asking $1355..

    FWIW - I'm 37 y/o male - perfect driving record.

    • What car do you have? You're making it sound interesting.

I had an interesting car insured by these guys: http://www.famousinsurance.com.au/
Shannon's and Justcar also had fairly competitive quotes. And at the time, NRMA quoted just under $13k (which is basically we don't want to insure you).

Why wouldn't Coles insure your car ? I switched from SGIO to Coles - was a good deal. Sometimes these insurance companies offer great deals i.e. SGIO to suck you over then the first renewal they bump it up.

  • Shannons?

HAD A CRACKED WINDSCREEN LAST THURSDAY RANG COLES INSURANCE WITHIN TWO MINUTES BOOKED IN
NEXT DAY FRIDAY AT 1.PM OUT AND DONE BY 2.30 PM. GREAT SERVICE WELL DONE COLES CAR INSURANCE.

  • Definitely look at Bingle. Always very competitive prices, and I've claimed twice (different cars, different policies) and had a great experience both times.

Give Allianz a try. Surprisingly they were the cheapest for us compared to all the other insurers mentioned in the comments of this post. It was less than $1000 to insurer our 2013 BMW X5. You can cut the cost even further if you restrict the policy to a few nominated drivers.

Just note with QBE they generally want you to pay the excess up front, and refund it back if they deem you weren't at fault.

And I also found youi to have very aggressive sales people.

Allianz is one that's not on your list yet as well.

      +1 on youi for aggression…

    • Thats great to know re QBE, thanks, I might avoid them now!

Allianz won't insure my car - location and lack of security on the vehicle..

  • Had two claims with Allianz (not at fault), everything went pretty smoothly no issues. Not the cheapest and didn't have additional car hire or road assist but were fine.

  • Pays to shop around.
My recent renewal was $627 from NRMA. QBE want $1557 and won't insure for the same agreed value ($200 less, but that's not the point).

  • HBF can be worth a quote

    • Just tried this one, very expensive - ~$1600.

  • I was with QBE and their service is terrible. Their appointed panel beater damaged my car while repairing. QBE said it is none of their business, and asked me to negotiate with the panel beater directly.

Also when you file a claim, you have to print, fill in and sign a paper form which is a joke while many insurance companies only require you to fill an online form and click the submit button.

  • It sounds like the cheaper options (Bingle, Coles, WW, etc) may not be as bad as some review sites lead us to believe.. I'm glad to hear some positive experiences from them!
Allianz won't insure my car, nor will Coles - its a 2003 Nissan 350Z touring coupe - auto trans.

    • You mean they won't insure you driving a 350Z? Because Allianz will happily insure me driving it for $1090. Only market value though which I'm not a fan of.

      • "Due to the location and insufficient security on the vehicle"

        Kinda lame..

        • Right, so it's not that they won't insure your car, it's due to living in a perceived high risk area. And I'm assuming non-secured parking, and no additional security like an alarm? It's due to their historical data on claims in that area etc. Insurance is a bitch like that.

        • @nafe: Yeah I guess so.. I actually live in Drummoyne (a nice area with not a lot of crime), and my car is locked in a secure garage under the building, but oh well!

        • @axloz:

That is weird! I would have expected better, but it's such a fickle thing with insurance. Insuring my car gave me quotes from $627 to $2600 using the exact same details etc across a range of insurers!

        • @nafe: Yep, I'm finding the same thing. It's a crazy crazy world!

  • Just did a Bingle qoute - almost identical to the Suncorp quote - circa $1k for agreed value (~$12k), with windscreen cover included.

  • Try one of those comparison websites like Comparethemarket to get an idea.

It looks like you already found very cheap quotes.

I also found that insurance companies didn't like insuring me when I said the car is parked daytime in an unsecured public carpark. Its probably not your age or driving record but its theft risk.

Since 37 y/o with perfect driving record and value of $14K maybe consider increasing your excess to lower your premium. Many insurance companies allow a maximum excess of $1800 to $2200.

If the 350Z is a weekend car or protected in a covered garage during work then also consider 3rd party property. This is good if you don't need flood or hail damage.
