From the reviews, sounds like the one you linked was a $129 99cc mower. The one in this post is different.

      • I don't get all the bad reviews from the cheapie 99CC mower. I also bought one of these late last year and it has been great! I only really bought it as a spare to use in summer so I could have two people cutting at once on a big suburban block. Compared to the Victa 2 stroke it is so much better to use. The only that let's it down the catcher is smaller and not as easy to get on and off as the Victa. But starts first time, probably helps that I have a clean spark plug and always fresh fuel in there. I wonder how many with starting problems are numpties who don't even do basic maintenance. Much lighter and easier to move around compared to the Victa as well.

I would love to endorse this product - my Mum had one and boy did it power on with excellent cutting power!!

Except that just outside of its two year warranty, it developed a crack in the engine mount and started spewing oil everywhere

Thankfully after a few emails and photos, the manufacturer issued a refund

Hopefully you all get a better one than my Mum got, it is a great product, essentially

Ours has been going great for nearly 4 years without an issue. It replaced an expensive branded one which was nothing but trouble. We only paid about $300 for it though (I'd have to dig out the receipt). Aldi seem to suffer price-creep when they have a product they know will sell well.

Can't go wrong with a Briggs and Stratton donk.

The problem isn't the motor, it's what the motor is attached to. You can buy a B&S attached to a dodgy rustbucket at masters or bunnings any day of the week.

  • My Aldi mower is still going very strong after 4 years. That said, they change the model slightly each time.

  • Anyone got any tips on how to stop the self-propelled wheels from slipping in the grass? I've been meaning to glue a bike tyre to mine, but haven't find an old bike tyre yet.

You can raise the cutting height, but unsurprisingly that doesn't cut the grass low enough.

    • Anyone got any tips on how to stop the self-propelled wheels from slipping in the grass?

Drill some small self-tapping screws into the rear tyres. So they end up studded like footy boots!

Well, of course not. Raising the cutting height will cut the grass higher, not lower.

      • I would think the screws will make it rough going over concrete paths, driveway etc.

And it was just a joke - I understand the difference between higher and lower. But raising the cutting height is the only solution I've seen on other sites.

          Yeah, I didn't think of that :-0

Ooops, sorry. I totally didn't relate the raising height to the traction comment.

    • Screw/glue in some golf shoe spikes or nylon footy spikes.

Hard rubbish or tyres at Kmart are i think $10 Get the largest, cut the sides off as you only want the tread part use a couple of screws at the start and "no more nails" or silicon put a screw about every 75 mm and away you go,i have now done this to all my mowers much better than the standard wheels

    • To get extra grip, instead of using just metal screws in the wheels, which can damage paving and concrete, use these: https://www.bunnings.com.au/tic-22mm-white-rubber-screw-on-b…

If they get damaged just replace them.

Can't go wrong with a Briggs and Stratton donk.

Unfortunately, I did in 2001, paying $399 for a Rover mower with a B&S engine. Sometimes it refused to start after over 40 attempts. A week later it might start first or second try. Occasionally it would stop after a few minutes. It was entirely unpredictable - fresh fuel, oil change, clean filter, new spark plugs, still inconsistent. Sometimes, when it finally started, I barely had the energy to commence mowing. I was almost pleased when it finally gave up the ghost.

So in December 2008, money was tight and we took a chance at BigW on a $199 Victa Sabre mower, made just before Briggs & Stratton bought the company. For nearly 8 years it never gave me a moment's trouble, absolutely always starting first or second pull. I never changed the spark plug or blades, and never actually saw the filter, though I suppose it had one. I only changed the oil 3 times. It paid for itself many times over, considering getting my mowing done for me would cost about $80 nowadays. To hell with that, I need the exercise anyway.

      +1 for the review/rant.

  • I wonder how easy it is to get replacement blades

    • I'm wondering about replacement parts in general.

  • Don't bother with the lawn mower. It's crap. The reviews are pretty bad. The lack of after purchase support and parts is enough to make the decision for you. http://www.productreview.com.au/p/gardenline-aldi-petrol-mow…

my experience was good - first time to line up for opening time with comrades - plenty of offers to help to load heavy big box - one fellow was actually buying another for a spare - he was impressed so much with the one he bought a couple of years ago - don't quite get it but each to his own

at home normal copious instructions and online videos - a bit painful, catcher was awkward - mulcher plug was missing - rang 1800 help number left a message - they were working 13/8 due to aldi sale - got a call back later and they will send out a mulcher plug to arrive by next weekend. offered refund or replacement option but advised of national sellout.

started second pull - self propelled good - instructions include details of where to get replacements blades, parts. all good time will tell…
