Anyone else experiencing stale Ferrero Rocher?

Has anyone else noticed that their Ferrero Rochers that are close to the Best Before date are tasting a bit off?

I did some research online and they state that you shouldn't buy any that are 1-2 months within the Best Before date.

It makes me think that they should really have an expiry date on these, not a best before date. I believe this because there is a vegetable oil component which can go stale. I spent hours in the bathroom just throwing up.

Does anyone know where I can take my box for further testing? There are a few pieces missing but I don't think I can take it back to the supermarket.

Unlike other chocolates, I believe there is something different about the product; most likely the oil component which means it does not warrant a best before date. Does anyone know anything about why it has a best before date when clearly it induces a human response that indicates an expired product?

The product is produced in Canada. Notably I found this:

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency mandates that only five types of products need to be labelled with an expiration date:

  • Baby formula and other human milk substitutes.
  • Nutritional supplements.
  • Meal replacements.
  • Pharmacist-sold foods for very low-energy diets.
  • Formulated liquid diets.

The Australian regulations however, are a bit more fuzzy.

best-before date, for a food for sale, means the date up to which the food for sale will remain fully marketable and will retain any specific qualities for which express or implied claims have been made, if the food for sale:

(a) remains in an intact package during its storage; and

(b) is stored in accordance with any storage conditions applicable under Standard 1.2.6.

use-by date, for a food for sale, means the date after which it is estimated that the food for sale should not be consumed because of health or safety reasons, if the food for sale:

(a) remains in an intact package during its storage; and

(b) is stored in accordance with any storage conditions applicable under Standard 1.2.6.

I ate breakfast first and then I experienced some symptoms.

I then vomited up everything but I still needed to eat something. So, I ate some bread, but a few minutes later I had the same problem again.

2 hours into the ordeal, I could still feel the taste of it inside my mouth when I had to throw up again.

It happened a few times until I couldn't taste it anymore.

I don't know if I've developed some allergy or if it is something else, but the chocolates do smell a bit off.

I'm really looking to take them in somewhere for further testing, even if it is at my own cost…

Why would you go to such effort? Are you hoping to financially gain from this?

          Mental not physical.

        • You had chocolates for breakfast? If yes, that seems like a questionable dietary choice. If not, where did the chocolates come into things? Food poisoning of any sort usually sets in pretty quickly, so if you had them the night before I'd be surprised if they were the cause of something after breakfast.

Didn't know anyone still bought that awful stuff. Usually find that someone gives it to you, you pass it on to another person & so it goes on until somebody finally gives it back to you. By which time of course it will be either close to or out of code.
Moral of the story, don't give out as a pressie as most people can't stand the product.

    • Really? I like it and sometimes buy it for myself when it's on special. I've never tried it close to it's best before date though.

Ferraro usually has a much shorter life than other chocolate products; about six months compared to ~12 for something like Cadbury. They go stale (mainly the wafer part) but they're still safe for human consumption, hence the BB date. Linking a specific product to your illness is going to be iffy, and going as far as testing just seems crazy to me.
