VPN.sh - Price Increases for Yearly Plans

I received an email from VPN.SH changing my yearly plan from 1GBP per annum to 2.50GBp per month.

Just in case any of you signed up with them cancel your subscription.

We aim to provide you with a high quality VPN service, and to provide a higher quality of service, we've made the decision to make some changes to your package and billing plan.

You're currently on our promotional yearly unlimited bandwidth plan, meaning that you have no limits on bandwidth to use throughout the year. We're transitioning your unlimited bandwidth plan to be paid monthly rather than yearly. Unfortunately this will come at an increased cost to your current package, however we're keen to keep you on as a client, and will provide you with a discount which keeps our service at a lower cost than our competitors.

When your service is due for renewal, you'll receive your first invoice on the new unlimited bandwidth monthly plan. This shall be priced at £2.50/month, which is a significant discount compared to new clients, and undercuts the vast majority of other VPN providers. We're ensuring that you still get great value for money, whilst we can increase the quality of our service.

If you do not wish to renew once we move to the monthly pricing structure, please login to the My Services section of our client area. Click the name of your service, and you should be able to see a red "Request Cancellation" button, where you can then cancel your service. Be sure to set the cancellation type to "End of Billing Period" to ensure that you can continue using your service until it expires.

If you have any questions, please open a support ticket.

Surprisingly comes a day they offer torrenting servers.

  • Saw that and cancelled my account, I hardly used it except for viewing some US content on webpages

    • i use it mainly for finding bargains based on location.

    Merged from VPN.sh Fraud

VPN.sh provided this deal last year https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/205872. The store rep told everyone in the forum that they will charge the same amount annually as long as the customer wants and its not for the first year alone.

just before the first yearly renewal they sent a email stating they are changing from ~2$/ year to $5/month and i have two choice either to accept thier new fee or cancel the service. if i would not seen the email in time they would have sucked money out of my account which is FRAUD.

Keep in mind the store rep repeated post these deal atleast once in a quarter and woo customer base. collecting feedback from other ozbargainer on thier experience from vpn.sh and ensuring that ozbargain site does not become a channel for fraud.

so did they direct debit your bank account? if no, then there is no fraud.

the title of this thread is misleading.

Fraud is illegal. Changing prices isn't.
You can take up this with your local equivalent of Fair Trading if you feel they used deceptive advertising practices, and you should do so.

      • it's a UK based company so I would say raise a ticket and quote applicable consumer law.
        See what they do.
I do believe it is misleading if the rep said ongoing… I only signed up for it because of that.

As a biz owner selling similar services, all I can say is that it's bad business practice which will potentially drive customers away, but price/plan changing isn't illegal, and if you aren't happy with the price you can simply not pay.

    • -1

well they need to be able to state it in their terms and conditions to you upon sign up.
we were told by the rep that this would be the ongoing price without reference to terms and conditions.
so this was misleading by the rep.

well they need to be able to state it in their terms and conditions to you upon sign up.

they may have a clause/s that allow them to change prices as long as they give the customers notice.

that post was dated almost 12 months ago. their world changed, so did their prices.

Hi there, representative from VPN.sh here.

This is a recurring amount, so you'll be locked in at this price point for as long as you wish to renew. If you haven't setup a PayPal subscription for the product, then you'll just receive your invoice in 12 months time for £1/year again. If you decide to renew, there will be no further costs than the £1/year, and of course you can decide to simply cancel if you wish as well.

        Hope that clarifies!

    • Yes, you are right. Gaining the trust of your customers takes time. Loosing it will take just few moments. But there is no fraud, its just they are informing. Now its up to user if they wanna continue.

  • I had similar issue and had put a cancellation request. Also raise a ticket with paypal to suspend them due to malpractice. encourage others as well. As its equal to buying a product and seller raise the price just before shiping saying if you want it pay more or get lost. most of signed in first year knowing their server was initially bad they will slowly increase server over the year.

The promise it will be unlimited low cost for limited customer for a lifetime was never thier intention. we were actually guinea pigs for them to trial out and tell others that they have huge customer base.

    • As its equal to buying a product and seller raise the price just before shiping saying if you want it pay more or get lost.

it would be equal if you order an item on today (28.07.2016) and they shipped the item 11 months later.

    • Also raise a ticket with paypal to suspend them due to malpractice.

this doesn't apply unless you were a client or a patient of their's.

    • A couple of years ago I had found a pair of Calvin Klein jeans on the Salvos online store website. They were really cheap and looked like new (actually they might have been new), so I clicked on buy and when I was about to pay it said that the price had gone up. In about 2 minutes??? I found this very strange. Anyway, I didn't buy them. (I also cancelled my VPN.SH subscription of course).

      • Yeah some online stores are pure hoax. But I have never seen a result like this from a reputable website.

So yeah before I even buy, I check out the website authority and know about their credibility in the market, you never know even with agreement, they will not upgrade!

        • Sometimes I have seen sales of products (for example 20% off) and when I checked other sites the price was either the same or even lower. But when some people read that a product is on sale they automatically think to save money if they buy it, which is often not the case. Sometimes it is, but of course it is better to check other stores/sites to be sure.

        • @OzBargainGrabber:

Yes agreed, its in people mind when they see sale. They think they are saving money. But still make sure you want to buy specific item in specific price before you get bait in sale's hand.

it's silly for customers to think that the price of a subscription would remain static for the life of the subscription.

    • -1

not silly if the Rep stated that it would be the same price ongoing.
      we get charged 1GP annually.
They have raised the price to 30GBP annually.
      That's an increase of 3000%
And that's on the second invoice.

It has been almost a year since they advertised that deal. Their budget has changed, and so has their costs and plans. They simply cannot run their company into the ground so they can please the few customers that signed up the that particular deal.

Our governments do the same every with their budgets. Why should private companies operate differently?

    • -1

yes. but what sane private company would uprate their customers 3000% and expect them to remain customers?
If i'd uprated my customers 3000% based on my budget expectations i wouldn't have any customers left.

Governments are different as you're stuck with them regardless!

as per below i'm voting with my wallet and leaving and will always have bad sentiments of this company and will not be referring anyone to them.
Hopefully this thread spreads that the company hasn't kept their word.

They've given notice to those on this subscription that can cancel before being charged. SOunds reasonable.

  • Whooah1979: I cant understand why the store rep who may be watching all this still does not want to come and respond and you are defending them. we are not fighting for something which was not anticipated by the company that cost will increase over the year. if they would have mentioned it in their initial offering, I can accept.

They offered again few month back similar scheme https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/241583, which is still reasonable if you increase from 1GBP to 3GBP annually. cant believe, suddenly just when annual subscription is on renewal the cost of managing business is increased. that too by 3000%. I am in agreement with Dasher that I will give negative vote to vpn.sh or its afffliate anytime they post in a deal site.

My view their entire business model is on getting money from people who will forget to cancel auto-renewal and will escalate once deduction of first month charge and many will still keep guessing where the money is going.. that is termed as Fraud.

I cancelled my service at least 10 months ago. Strangely received an invoice today for their monthly service. I guess I will have to try and cancel my already cancelled service.

    • you can try. i havent been able to log into their website all day today.

      • Try going to the your payment method office and cancel for their just to be sure!

  • +1

I went to Paypal and cancelled from there as well just to ensure that the cancellation is completed.

  • i too will cancel my subscription.

  • I cancelled too.

  • Beware! Make sure you cancel your recurring paypal payment as well! I cancelled my subscription on the 28th of last month and VPN charged me today. Dispute initiated.

  • FRAUD FRAUD FRAUD

    • Why are you so furious?

  • Got this email as well just before, I've been charged yesterday (received no email from PayPal about this) and received email today about pricing change.. whilst it's only $2.5 is did not sign up for that.

I thought the PayPal user had to agree to subscription based payment changes??

540% price increase haha no thanks!

  • They are a big fraud. I had account cancelled from Nov 2016. My forgotten paypal automatic yearly payment kicked in and set them a yearly payment. I cancelled my yearly payment but VPN.sh would not return my money and can only show it as credit on my account. All my support tickets go unanswered. Paypal was no help either they say I need to resolve it with VPN.sh. Their facebook page shows no activity and looks like they are out of business from what I see.
