    Ha, typical OzBargainer budget.

Try http://www.msy.com.au/home.php The Lenovos like this are pretty popular

  • HP G3 250 L9V92PA
Core i5 Broadwell for $499 from MSY.

  • Just a point on budgets - sometimes spending a little more can yield a much better product. Near the bottom end, corners get cut, and the closer to the bottom you are the more severe those cuts are. With the AUD so low, I would try to stretch to around $800, it will get you a much nicer machine and I suspect the longer life of the laptop would mean that the cost per year would be lower overall. Just my 2c.

"The Bitterness of Poor Quality remains Long after the Sweetness of Low Price is Forgotten"

If you really can't stretch, you might find better value hunting for (or asking a tech savvy friend, or an ozbargainer to help you find) a good used laptop.

It would also help if we could know what you plan to use this laptop for.

    • thanks for the tip. i notice these days the lack of a cd drive/full hard drive seems to be the the standard with lower end models.

hopefully using said laptop for general internet browser and some photoshop work. so a cd drive(burner would be good).
I am pretty prepared to wait loading times (with using a dual core), but anything slower won't be a good thing.

i got some jbhifi vouchers (about 300$) are the demo models at these stores worth looking at? or the battery has been exhausted/ expected to be replaced soon.?

  • Can I ask when you think you would be using CD/DVDs? Usb sticks are cheap, hold far more, are more durable, and can be reused many times. For anything under 1GB I usually use a cloud service like Dropbox.

I don't like demo models personally as they get so much physical abuse. Battery would probably be fine, as they are plugged in continually so not using the battery.

    • cd-dvd = installing games/software from cds.

The default answer to any "I need a cheap laptop" on this forum is "Try the Dell Refurb Store" - http://www.dell.com/learn/au/en/audhs1/campaigns/dell-outlet…

For $549 you can get a refurb Inspiron 15 5000 with a 6th generation i5 (i.e. current chip), DVD drive, 1Tb drive etc. (Search for DFO-2806-1555).

Downsides are low resolution screen and spinning hard-drive (as opposed to SSD), but you should be able replace the hard-drive with an SSD if and when cashflow turns positive.

    • +1 This is the right answer.

It's my standard place to find laptops for friends and family - my mum got a laptop exactly like the one described by GordonR above for $520 (RRP $899) and it's been rock solid and looks completely brand new, with full warranty and free postage.

Just yesterday I helped a friend pick up an "as new" Inspiron 15 7000 with i7, 1080p touchscreen and 256GB SSD for $999 - that's about $700 off the retail price.

  • You can get an external DVD drive for around $40.
