  • Hi IWTF, do you think these sub $1,000 flights to the US will ever make their way to school holiday periods? I know you probably don't know for certain, but is there a trend looking that way?

Thanks again for all your tips :)

    • Hi Bellpop,

Unfortunately, I don't have any inside info, only what I read online - and that points to reduced airfares for the moment due to competition but nothing special in the holidays. Being a parent of 2 kids over 2, it would be great if the sales ran over the holidays :)

      • In the same boat here. And I'm a teacher, so holidays are good haha. Thanks again buddy :)

        • +2

Try school holiday dates on STA. If you have the isic equivalent of teachers cards, you would be eligible for many of qantas' blue tickets. I dont know if they currently have a sale but I have found sub $1000 prices to new york on qantas over Christmas in May.

        • @gr33nhouse: wow, thanks man. You should post the deal on here! Thanks :)

          @Bellpop:
Its limited to students and teachers. Not sure it qualifies as a deal. Happy to help you out though.

  • I've always wondered. If you have frequent flyer points, do they have more value during a sale or can't you use points on sales?

    • +2

If booking reward seats, they would have less value during sales, since the point cost is fixed

Imagine a reward seat from a to b cost 10,000 points

During a sale, you can pay $900, so 10,000 points = $900 in this instance

Whereas a non sale, the cost of the seat is $1200, so 10,000 points = $1200 here

You're both correct and incorrect. Classic Flight Rewards do decrease in value like you described. On the other hand, Points Plus Pay Rewards are always based on the current dollar value of the fare, so do decrease in cost when there's a sale on.

For example, QF currently has MEL-WLG flights later this month for ~$220. The Classic Reward is 18000 points and ~$120 taxes. The same flight can be booked as a Points Plus Pay booking for 18000 points and ~$80. On top of paying less, in this case you'd also earn 1000 points from the flight.

        ….

Curse you, madmouse58, I thought I'd managed to forget everything about my old job ;)

        • wasn't talking about points + pay, thats why i started off my sentence with "if booking reward seats".

thanks for including the example for points + pay though, now OP has more examples. :)

        • @madmouse58: Points + Pay bookings are Reward seats. You're using points, and QF classifies it as a Reward.

It's so depressing to see these fares and then realise you can't go cos you have kids going to school

    • +2

      That's why I'm not having kids ;)

Great deal… just wanted to say that SF is the most fantastic city! Highly recommend anyone who can to go there and you will love it. Also get around and see the surrounds. If you can manage it, flying to LA then driving the Pacific Coast Highway north to SF is brilliant… happy travels everyone!

    • +3

Should add that it is equally as brilliant flying into sf and driving south down the coast to la.

Also worth mentioning that you are closer to the coast driving due to the yanks driving on the rhd

      • +1

Also second driving from SF to LA. Views are amazing. Definitely worth it.

Easier to stop at all the little viewing points alomg the highway too.

        • +2

should also say, hire a convertible and go topless… best way to enjoy the scenery!!

        • @TimOfAshgrove: just the top or bottom as well?

        • @TimOfAshgrove: I did the convertable from LA to Vegas. Amazing drive- once you get out of LA traffic- which goes on for about 2 1/2 hours

    • Yes PCH Route-1 and the Big Sur with a Mustang Convertible is the best.

  • Hmmm… Air NZ's sale is slightly cheaper. Which one to choose?

    • are you chasing velocity or QFF for status?

  • My Only concern is the disclaimer on the bestjet site about local taxes being excluded…
    * Prices in AUD and include taxes and fees for payments made with Debit card. Credit card surcharges, Visa & Mastercard 1.9% Diners & Amex 3.5%, Paypal 1.5%. Fares exclude any local taxes that are payable at the airport.

  • Eh it's alright but not amazing. I was looking for flights up to Seattle last month and Qantas has one in at SYD-SFO then SEA-SFO-SYD for $800. Decided to cheap out and went Virgin and Delta (cause velocity) for $720 ish.

  • Hey rep

Why does your app don't have the multi ticket offers??

  • Cx had deals to New York for 1400 and u get to stop over in Hk
