Mum told me "there ain't no such thing as a free lunch"

    • In the 30s and 40s, saloons (pubs) had free lunches with the intention of enticing patrons who would pay for beer. The "free lunch" of the phrase originally referred to this practice. I still see it in Australia, in the form of the "kids eat free" version.

Even as far as the 70's in Dunedin [OK, so that is 30s-40's Australia]. We [staff and owners/bosses] used to grab what they termed a "counter lunch" which was a beer and a cottage pie styles affair made with the left-overs from the nearby Hotel's previous evening meal. One of the best lunches I've had [tho even a warm dog-turd in a Dunedin winter would have a certain utility].

Did she charge you for your school lunch?

Mum told me "there ain't no such thing as a free lunch"

Well it seems that her use of the double negative has in this case proven to be correct.

Be aware that they are a charity trying to raise awareness for their very worthy cause. Please don't take advantage of them.

Please don't take advantage of them.

      How would one do that?

It seems there's an oversupply of food and we're saving it from landfill. Is our gluttony not altruistic?

    • The invitation is just that - they wish to raise awareness of what and why they are, and all will be welcome. Ozbargainers as a group are often on a very similar wavelength.

I'm thinking of going! I want to try and start a food fight. In my imagination this ends with everyone lifting me up on there shoulders and chanting my name.
