is there some dodgy way to port my number out or something to get around this?

Tell them your sim card is faulty. They will briefly question you and then send out a sim at no cost ;)

      Say your phone randomly loses coverage and then reconnects. Advise them you have tried an Optus sim in the phone and this hasn't happened.
