Portal FREE on Steam

2630

So it looks like the popular game Portal is currently FREE to purchase, until 24th May.

So that means you have until the 24th to snap up this game for no charge. It is not a demo or trial, it is the 100% full game that will last forever.
Steam client is now on Mac so both Mac and PC gamers can enjoy this.

Make a Steam account if you haven't already, click the Install Game link and download Steam if you haven't already got it. You'll then have to download the game - approx. a 1.5 to 4GB download depending on platform.

Have fun!

It's a 5GB download - for Mac anyway, not sure if there's much difference for PC.

      Many ISP's have unmetered Steam.
Bigpond, Internode, Adam, Netspace and anyone with unmetered 3FL Gaming Network do anyway.
Install Frey's Steam Filter or Steamwatch to throttle downloads only from the Quota Free Servers.

Portal is an awesome game, got me back into gaming as a 32 year old having not played games since I was 17.
It's a Puzzle game really, but has great humour and mind mangling solutions.
If you're looking for some mental exercise, Portal delivers!

      • +2

        Also it has cake!

        • +9

It does not. The cake is a lie!

    • says 2502mb disk space required for pc

      • +1

Really? I'm sure I got 1500mb. Wierd? Maybe it's just another puzzle of Portal.

        • When starting download it says it needs >5gig
          Current Network Usage says 2370.6MB
          Below it says downloaded 3879.1MB

So god only knows that those programmers were smoking. It seems pc download is really 2.3gig according to my download quota (thanks to Frey's 3fl filter, all in freezone)

        • +2

I think it all has to do with whether you have any halflife 2 files already on your system, since I expect them to all share resources.

So theoretically if on a mac per say you don't own any other hl2 products then it is the full 5Gb

others on PC probably own HL2 in one form or another so the download is alot smaller.

          • @fenrer: I installed steam just for this, dont have any HL2, the only other game i have on this machine is C&C Tiberium Sun.

            Windows 7 Ultimate.

          • @fenrer: Yeah that probably explains the difference.

      • It needs more. You already have content from other games which are required by Portal, so you do not need to download those parts.

The full download clocks in at around 4.5GB.

    • Steam works on Macs???…well there you go, didn't know that. Can you play all the games?

  • gah I NEED QUOTA
stupid optus not having free steam dl

  • I believe that this is actually a free copy for good.

    • Oh yeah - sorry, my wording might be a bit confusing. I mean that it's free to purchase until the 24th. Unfortunately I can't edit my post so I hope people wondering will read this!

      • You can edit.. there's an edit button just above the image of your post I think.

        • Oh hey look you can haha - not sure why I didn't see that before. Cheers

  • Mac download is approx 3.8gb, approx 5gb installed. Downloading at just under 1MB/s, minutes after kicking me off the server because it was "too busy".

    This is excellent

12 days to play portal, it shouldn't be too hard.
You can probably get all the achievements too in that time.
I got my copy with the orange box from g2play.net which included TF 2.
In fact I only bought the orange box for TF 2, portal was just an extra.

And for the Nvidia and ATI users, here's some other free steam games(mainly HL 2 deathmatch):
    Nvidia: http://www.steampowered.com/nvidia/
    ATI: http://www.steampowered.com/ati_offer1a/

    • +2

Portal is free for 12 days. You get to keep it if you buy it in the next 12 days.

  • -7

so its not 100% free.. its more of trial version..
    mod please change the title..

    • +1

no, it's free for you to purchase for the next 12 days. After the 12 days, if you wish to buy the game, it will cost money - like any other special steam holds, it's for a limited time. If you buy in the next 12 days (for free) you will OWN THE GAME =D

      WIN!

      • apologies~ will d/l tonight then buy straight away

        • Buy now, download later..

    • Sorry if the inital post was a bit confusing but yes, like other people have said it is the full version of the game up for grabs but it is only free for the next 12 days - after that you'll have to pay if you want to buy it, so get it quickly!

  • Is it free until the 24th of May or forever? I'm confused.

    • +3

just say this : get this (full version) game free before 24th of May.
      After that, you must pay

  • +4

    The cake is a lie.

    • +1

Damn it you beat me to it…

      I was going to say

DON'T BUY IT THE CAKE IS A LIE!!!

  • Awesome game. Advance marketing for Portal 2?

    • moreso for Steam on the Mac I think.. But Portal 2 hopefully soon, possibly event on May 24th dare I say it?

  • Some more detail:

    http://store.steampowered.com/freeportal

In my recent transactions it is listed as:
13 May 2010 Free Charge Portal - Complimentary (Opt In) Purchased for this account

The acquisition method is listed as "Complimentary" not as a "Gift/Guest Pass".

It definitely looks to me like if you "buy" it for free before May 24 it's yours to keep.

And oh yes, insanely good game. Stop reading and start downloading!

  • Great game!

  • Already bought it a while back. Couldn't stress enough how awesome it is. GET IT!!!

  • Awesome game, gotta be one of my favourite games ever. They probably going to release portal 2 soon so hang out….

Now only if the game came with a free weighted companion cube plush toy now that would make my day.

  • +4

It's hard to overstate my satisfaction!

  • Thanks very much - this finally convinced me to get a Steam account. With my ISP the download was quota free as well so it was free to "buy" the game and free to download as well :)

  • I already have this on Xbox 360 with The Orange Box, but would much rather play on PC so I'm off to download it now!

For those wondering about the download size, I have Team Fortress 2 installed (pretty sure that's a HL2 game) and Portal started at 66% downloaded, with 1.3GB remaining. So that might help answer some questions.

    • I'm in nearly the exact same boat, except my copy of Orange Box was on PS3, otherwise my story reads out the same.

  • +4

This was a triumph. I'm making a note here: Huge Success.

    • It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.

  • Great find, great game but requires a fair bit of thinking :)

  • awessoommee

  • -7

    This was a triumph!
    I'm making a note here:
    "HUGE SUCCESS!!"

    It's hard to overstate
    my satisfaction.

    Aperture Science:
    We do what we must
    because we can.

For the good of all of us.
Except the ones who are dead.

    But there's no sense crying
    over every mistake.
    You just keep on trying
till you run out of cake.
    And the science gets done.
And you make a neat gun
    for the people who are
    still alive.

    I'm not even angry…
I'm being so sincere right now-
Even though you broke my heart,
    and killed me.

    And tore me to pieces.
And threw every piece into a fire.
As they burned it hurt because
I was so happy for you!

    Now, these points of data
    make a beautiful line.
    And we're out of beta.
    We're releasing on time!
So I'm GLaD I got burned-
Think of all the things we learned-
    for the people who are
    still alive.

    Go ahead and leave me…
    I think I'd prefer to stay inside…
    Maybe you'll find someone else
    to help you?
    Maybe Black Mesa?
That was a joke! HAHA- Fat Chance!

    Anyway this cake is great!
    It's so delicious and moist!

    Look at me: still talking
    when there's science to do!
    When I look out there,
it makes me GLaD I'm not you.

    I've experiments to run.
There is research to be done.
    On the people who are
    still alive.
    And believe me I am
    still alive.
    I'm doing science and I'm
    still alive.
    I feel fantastic and I'm
    still alive.
    While you're dying I'll be
    still alive.
And when you're dead I will be
    still alive.

    Still alive.

    Still alive.

  • Can anyone confirm it we install it before 24/5 and we can keep it after that? I played it before and it was superb!

    • +3

Yes. But you don't even have to install it before 24/5/10, all you have to do is log in and "buy" before 24/5/10. You can download and install any time after then on any number of machines, Windows or Macs.
(you just wont be able to play it on more than 1 machine at any one time)
      That's how Steam works…

      • so is that means we need to get connected to internet while playing ? how could the game knows "(you just wont be able to play it on more than 1 machine at any one time)" ??

        • Yeah.. you need to be online to start the game..
Unless you put Steam into Offline Mode.. (you have to be online to put Steam into Offline Mode)

      • Sweet, thanks for that

  • Great game, great deal get it while you can people!!!!! :)

  • First post and on your way to winning the weekly prize. Well done.

    • +1

sif surf steam store at 6am tho lol

      • Haha, I was staying up late watching a live stream of some Starcraft 2 matches.. someone mentioned it so I had a look, turns out it was true!

  • Awesome game!

  • Great post (and game), although it looks like the Steam servers on Bigpond (using Frey's SteamFilter)are being hammered by OzBargainers as I haven't been able to d/load since earlier this morning. But hey it's free so I'll just keep tryin'.

    • There's no rush to download. All you have to do is "buy" now, you could download next year for all Valve care!

      • There is a one year time limit, I know because I purchased an indie game bundle about 18 months ago and never got around to downloading one of the games (don't remember which one).
I realised on the last day, and tried to download it but I had been speed limited.
So yes, you have plenty of time to download it.

        • +1

Umm no…Steam doesn't have any limits? You can download it as often as you like.

If you are using software to force Steam to connect to bigpond then its likely Telstra just aren't mirroring the game anymore. Regardless, I've downloaded games well over a year of originally getting them…in fact its one of the selling points of steam.

edit: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8360-WEJ… pretty much summed up there. Note, Bigpond themselves may not mirror every game however (or the list can change), so as above, by using a tool to force connection to Bigpond you may limit what titles you can obtain.

        • Yeah, there is no limit.. you can download to any machine at any time.

  • Server was busy for me too but I got it to download after a few attempts.

  • +1

    SORRY newbie here..
so i go to http://www.ozbargain.com.au/goto/25548, click on play now.
    register, download the apps (1.5mb)
    install
then i run the apps, it says, "steams updating" but then i get error "to use steam you must connect to internet"
but i am connected to internet now… and its dsl and fast.

    help, please

    • just open it again (seems the servers are getting hammered)

    • I had to turn my firewall completely off to get rid of that message. Even if I set it to allow steam I would still get it, but once I turned it off completely I was able to install.

      • thanks i will try., but i suspect steam is got banned from my uni's network

  • fantastic.

  • The server is still busy it seems. Haven't been able to download it since afternoon. Anyone else having trouble?

    • +1

I've downloaded 40mb in the last 4 hours.

  • woot, added it to my 4 accounts lol

  • Great game; already got it, but a top deal all the same.

Now, who's got the deal on Portal 2? :)

  • Downloaded and installed last night at around 10pm. Finished the game at 2am. Is that all the game have??? =/

    • Yeah, it was a "bonus" game with The Orange Box..
      3-4 hours is about right.

Portal 2 is coming out shortly, and if you want impossible extensions to Portal, try the free, user generated Portal Prelude and Portal TFV (The Flash Version).
Prelude seems to be impossible and TFV is very hard, I've only completed a few levels of each.

  • Does one usually have one steam account per player or can multiple players (in a family) share one steam account?

  • How does one actually "purchase" Portal?

    I have an account.

I've found Portal (and started downloading).

I can't see where I actually purchase it - everything I click attempts to start the download (I'm on a different machine now than the one I started the install on).

    Sorry, no experience with Steam.

    Cheers,
    Ashley.

    • Well if you've started downloading you've already purchased it then! If you go into your games list in Steam, Portal should show up. If it is then everything is fine.

If you have one account but several computers, it's fine to have the same account running on all the computers - however only one computer can be logged into that account at one time. You'll also have to download any games purchased onto each computer.

      • Thanks Zhanggg but I'm still confused. Someone said you could purchase it without downloading, so I thought I would at least need to go to a store and, perhaps, provide CC details. I don't want to lose access when the promotion period ends.

So each player should have a different account? Can I download it once onto our games machine and then our kids can each have an account and use the game at different times? And if I download it on another machine as well, they could both play at the same time but under their own separate accounts.

Sorry if this is obvious …

        • If you've already started downloading it than it's yours to keep, no need to worry about missing out.

If you've got a few kids, maybe start a few accounts. You can have one main account, but if your getting this free, there's no reason not to get them their own account with a free game (hey hopefully it's still around when they move out).

          Hope this answers your question.

        • If the game is already in your steam game library, you won't lose it even if you don't download it. I still have quite a few games purchased over the past few months pending download. Once you download it, you can use the "Backup and restore games" function to backup the game if you want to transfer it to another machine. Multiple accounts is also a good idea as each steam account can only be logged in once at any time.

  • still cannot download / updating steam after disable my win 7 firewall…

  • Great find. I am downloading it now.

  • Stuck on 18/19…

    • Yeah that is a hard level, there is a switch on the left hand side of the room with all of the robots. Took me ages to notice that.

  • Great freakin' freebie!

  • Brilliant freebie!
