NBN - 25/5 - Min 200GB - Cheapest ISP

Hi everyone,

Im looking for an ISP provider.

Decided to go with DCSI, on their $50/month for 200GB, but they say now they cannot do it, as I have FTTP.

What NBN providers can you recommend for up to $60 per month?

Thanks

  • Exetel - https://www.exetel.com.au/broadband/nbn $59 for 500gb and there are no peak/off peak restrictions. They currently have no setup fees.

    • Thanks.

Will look into it. Happy to pay the $100 setup fee to avoid exetels issues.
      Very poor reviews.

most isp do no setup fee for contract but then you are screwed if the service gets congested during peak hours and you can't leave cause your stuck with them.

not worth the risk better to pay the set up fee and no contract.

      • I was under the belief that if an ISP doesn't deliver a reasonable service (frequent congestion or drop-outs) then as a customer you have the right to void the contract and avoid any termination fees

Worked with me on a Vodafone phone plan when they had issues a couple years ago, would assume ISP's have to follow similar rules.

        • I had to pay an early termination fee to iprimus after the ping in the afternoons went from 2-5 to 400-1000

They didn't give a flying fk about the problem when i called them either.

was only like $20 as only had a few months left.

Im now with tpg without any problems for over 6 months now.

        • @Axelstrife:
Thanks. Im considering TPG, but their unlimited is $69.99/month, plus a wifi modem for $99.

Any suggestions for a cheaper, limited plan, or a cheaper wifi modem?(I believe its a router that I need).

        • +1

          Belong?

        • @movieman: tpg provides a modem with there NBN. it isnt very good but does the job till/if you decide to get a better one.

you do have to pay $10 delivery fee so i guess it's a $10 modem lol

What is the point in 25/5? That's barely faster than ADSL speeds.

    • What do you recommend?

Apparently my address has FTTP which is meant to be good.

I just dont want to pay much more than $60 per month.

      What do you suggest?

      • I suggest you spend more money and get 100mbps. You can't even stream 4k video at 25mbps.

        • I've got an opticomm FTTP service via iiNet. 100/40 is awesome.. however evenings is very congested and some typical usage is impacted. i.e. if I need to download off the iinet ftp mirror during congestion times its crap slow under 100kb/s per stream, where as in peak hours this same transfer will do >1.2MB/s per stream.

That said, we do pay a premium price but I do like the fact that you can use netflix, youtube and do other things like SIP calls with no impact due to the available bandwidth.

it's pointless spending more money when it's simply not needed.
unless you are downloading lots of large files like games or streaming in 4k or have lots of people in your house streaming/downloading all at once you dont need to get 100/40

i'm on 12/1 just for myself and it's plenty just for me even for gaming it's plenty.
i download upwards of 500gb a month easy

That's like buying a C180 when you could have got a C63 and claiming that no one needs an AMG.

        • +1

@thorton82: what's the point in getting 100/40 when they only need 200gb which tells me they don't download much and dont intend to stream 4k.

what you are saying is no different then buying a GTX 1080 for $1200 to play games on a 1080p monitor at 60hz while a a much cheaper RX 480 will play the same games maxed out on the same screen for $379.

        • @Axelstrife: because power. Speed. Race car.

        • +1

          @thorton82:you clearly enjoy wasting money.

      • If you have a solid ADSL connection I would recommend that. I was basically forced to upgrade to NBN because I would experience constant dropouts that would last up to 3 hours. I only have tier 1 but the fact that its so solid and never drops out makes up for its speed (which really isnt that slow anyway).

    • Barely faster if you're next door to the exchange maybe..

On average though, it's more than double the speed of ADSL2+ (or in the vicinity of 5x faster if you care about upload)

If you are on FTTP you have to move at some point as the copper will be disconnected. So for some users who don't need to stream the slower plans make sense.

I am looking for a cheap slow plan available for my mother-in-laws place, but it looks like she would be better just putting the money towards mobile data for the little she uses the current connection.

    Optus

    100/25 Mbps.

Not sure how much it costs.

Check Out SkyMesh Great Service & Plans Very Helpfull.

    • I called them a few times, but their extremely busy, and also their plans are on peak / off peak.

      Not ideal.

      • They can match other isp plans as well. So you can get them to match the exetel's plan and they are much more reliable.
I am with them and no issues ever.

    Thanks everyone for your comments:

Currently I've narrowed it down to two local providers:

    1. Aussie Broadband - 500GB @ 25/5, for $60/month, $80 connection (includes router).

    2. NBNSP - unlimited @ 25/5, for $60/month, $0 connection (includes router), but $100 disconnection fee. (spoke with Alex from NBN, who said it's unlimited, but not for downloading large files, etc - download large files/movies off peak only).

Anyone have any experience with either, before I commit to at least a month's worth?

    • My advice is to steer clear of providers who offer Unlimited…
It's at best misleading advertising, at worst it's a good indicator of high contention and congestion.
If you use 200Gb/month, 500Gb/month is essentially Unlimited anyway…

Out of curiosity, what do you usually use the internet for? Aside from visiting OzBargain on a daily basis, I mean.

As other posters pointed out, 25/5 is not much of an upgrade from ADSL2+, which I am assuming is what you have right now.

Did you consider Wondercom (if it is available in your area)?

Maybe this site can help you - https://www.whistleout.com.au/Broadband/Search/1110672

I was actually doing a bit of research about NBN providers, as it is currently in the works where I am. So far the result had been hit and miss with providers such as Exetel, Activ8me, Barefoot, and Spintel. Should NBN arrive in matter of months though, I am hoping to go with either TPG or Internode.

It's at least double for most people.

      ADSL2 is ~20/2 maximum. At 5km from exchange it's 0.

I've had 4mb, 6mb and 13mb down (best being around 1.5km to exchange, bit longer based on actual cable run not as the crow flies). 25/5 is doubling the best ADSL2 speed I've ever had plus far better upload (around 13/1 was the speed), hardly not much of an upgrade!

To everyone that keeps saying 25/5 is not much more than adsl2+ I would beg to disagree there.

    • I very much agree.
I'm wondering why nobody had pointed this out sooner.
My ADSL2+ connection is around 3Mb/s, I get roughly 250kb/s.
Having 25/5 is living the dream compared to adsl2+ speeds when a fair distance from the exchange.
Also I know may more with slower speeds than my connection.
Thankfully FttN is estimated less than a year away for me.
I would be very happy with 12/1.
But ideally 25/5 would suit me well.

I have no need to stream 4K and I'm so used to waiting 5-6 hours to download an 720p/1080p iTunes movie.
I would much prefer to download 4K than stream, so the slower speed is good enough for me.

I much prefer FttP for not having the rely on copper network for reliability than speed.

Nevertheless I've been spending the past 5 years on 3Mbits/s, any improvement will be appreciated.

      • They did.. I did..
About 20 minutes after the first mention of 25/5 being the same as ADSL

  • I meant to say, 25/5 is not much of an improvement from ADSL2+ compared to say, if you choose to get 50 or 100. Why stop at 25/5 though - which is why I asked if you use the internet for much else other than regular daily uses - browsing, checking mails and such.

You are quite right in regard of the varies of speed users are getting. Even I am only getting 13/1, and I am less than 1km away from exchange!

I see that you have a budget of $60 a month, Wondercom has unlimited 50-100 deal for $70 (just $10 above budget). I am not in any way associated with Wondercom or TPG for advocating their services, I just found that NBN is ridiculously overpriced for my liking. Plus, the speed tests provided by their users here is very mouth-watering for someone who has been using 13 Mbps for a decade.

In any case I hope you find what you want!

  • You have got to understand that "A contract is a CONTRACT" legally binding. Don't whine and complain if you don't READ the contract.
That being said; Unlimited Data is the way to go, if you do more than check your emails and open and view pages from your emails.
If you have FTTP I don't see where there would be a problem with speed.
I have fibre to the Node (FTTN) on a 25/5 2yr contract with iPrimus. Been with them for over 5yrs, the only problem I had was when they were suppling ADSL, (as with every other Telco) the further away from the exchange, the worst the speed/connection was. I also have to add, that over the time that I was getting ADSL, it got slower & slower with more & more connections supplied to the service (bottleneck). ALL bottlenecks have the same effect.
Back to the NBN issue; the same applies with FTTN. Signals degrade the further from the node you are, (same as ADSL), like I said before, I have a 25/5 connection and get speeds of 24.53 Mbps down & 4.64 Mbps up. The thing is, there is a Node next to my front fence, 10 metres from the Router. Probably sucks to be down the street using the same Node. (Distance still matters) If you do a lot of streaming &/or downloads, (& windows updates are downloads too), so reinstalling your OS and updating it will probably use all of your Data allowance plus. "Yeah, Windows OS sucks, but in this case, Linux also uses a lot of Data to download." With my family (2 Adults 2 adult children & 1 teenage child, all doing different stuff at the same time, I would burn through any Data limited Plan in no time at all.
So…. beware of the limits imposed on your contract, if you need a home phone (VOIP), or not, and what charges you are up for if you go over your Limit.
Think ahead. Bundling with a home phone is handy for those calls that you are put on hold for 2hrs, eg: Tax office, Centrelink, Telco's and all the others that don't give a 5#1T how long they leave you hanging, but you have NO choice but wait!
Remember, FUTURE Proof your system or it may come back to bite ya when you don't expect it.
Try to imagine what your future needs might be, & work backwards to something you can afford, with the functions you want/need.

    • You've experienced congestion on iPrimus ADSL but have bought iPrimus VDSL (FttN) with "unlimited" data and don't expect congestion?
      Got news for you..
NBN charge iPrimus $17.50 for every megabit transmitted from your house through their network to the Exchange.. so to transmit 25 megabits from exchange to your house costs iPrimus $437.50/month… Add on all the other costs of running an internet service (like overseas data transit charges and maintenance), probably doubles the cost of service, so now your 25mbits costs iPrimus $870/month… Then they've gotta pay their staff and their CEO, making the cost to service a rounded $1000/month.
You're probably paying no more than 10% of that cost in access fees, so just to break even on connectivity charges, iPrimus must be sharing your 25 megabits with another 10 houses, but to make a 20% profit, they'll need to share your connection with at least 12 houses. so you're really only buying a (25mbps/12) 2.1 megabit connection.
2.1 megabits/second continuous download equates to about 666Gb/month.

ie Your "Unlimited" plan is actually a 666Gb plan!

and that's a best case… most ISP's will be running in the 20:1 or higher contention ratio, the cheaper ones up to 100:1.

The ISP's that don't advertise "unlimited" plans, as a general rule, are more likely to have better contention ratio's (and therefore more reliable speeds), if only cause they don't need to make as many assumptions about their customer's anticipated usage.
