Good device and good price for the brand. But the inside atom chip just does not justify this kind of price tag.

I would buy those $100 or $200 atom z8300/z8500 tablets from Chinese manufacturers if I really need something at this level of performance.

The core m sp4 is $300 more atm. That $300 more is worth considering you have to pay for this at $700. Because the core m chip makes you feel no difference to a desktop PC doing basic tasks (web browsing for example) but on this model, you will have a feeling of using alternatives if the option is open to you.

    • Yep, not to mention better screen and integrated graphics.

      • +2

Yup. They even include free ass-rape as an EOFY offer.

Who am I kidding, that's an additional plan you need to subscribe to.

But I am very proud of being a cheapskate as I am a true ozbargainer.

I can buy cheap laptop and install osx if needed. Lol.

Great feeling to be called cheap!!!

Can you please suggest a buy then? I need something like this for uni work. just to look at pdfs, take notes ect.

      • +1

I currently have the m3 SP4 and it currently works wonders for uni for pdf annotations and taking notes and all that jazz.

Granted, I do feel the stutter occasionally as it only has 4GB RAM, but then again I have a gaming PC at home so the difference is profound.

        • Yea I have really likes what I have seen about the Surface pro. I too have a gaming PC and it is not good, anything with any kind of lag grinds my gears very fast. Thanks for that though, was helpful.

        • @cool kid: The M3 version has trouble with playing League of Legends at the lowest settings with about 40 fps early game (if that is any measure for its power). Plays Final Fantasy IX completely fine though.

So the Surface 3 you found would be even worse I guess?

        • @Doggiie: How did you know I played Lol? That is actually a practically perfect indication of its performance to me. So which one in the Microsoft surface series has the best performance/strongest specs? I am just a little confused sorry.

        • @cool kid: Nah I didn't know, I just happen to play LoL myself so would be an easy test of performance for myself.

What you found was the Surface 3, it is the previous generation and is the lighter version (someone correct me if I am wrong).

What I have is the Surface Pro 4 (Core M3) which is the cheapest model, and is fanless. The processor uses less wattage too so there is more battery life I guess?

The other Surface Pro 4 models use the regular Skylake iX models (i5 and i7) but their prices are significantly higher and has a fan. For each better processor, they have slightly better integrated graphics. The battery capacity I think is the same, so technically you will run out of juice faster.

I feel like the bottleneck is really either the integrated graphics or the RAM, as the M3 core has TurboBoost which can overclock the CPU when it needs the burst of power.

@Doggiie: Ahhhhhhhh, thank you so much bro for clearing that up. Yea me and my younger bro are looking to get one for out unis. It is pricey so thats why I am apprehensive atm, I just want to make the right decision with what I get because these things are pretty darn expensive. That info will definitely help so much, cheers.

macbook pro and you'll be sweet for uni… 3 years with no problems

        • I dont know about mac, I like windows. Haven't really felt compelled to use mac but I don't deny you are probably right about the macbook with so many people using it. Will reevaluate my stance soon.

        • +1

          @cool kid:

yeah i use windows at home but honestly the mac has no problems / crashing. The battery life is pretty good too, it easily lasts 6 hours at uni

I supposed I mentioned sp4 m3 at $1079, same as @Doggiie. If you use this model for uni stuff as main driver, you will hate it sometimes.

Or look for bigger but cheaper laptop with ssd and intel core cpu inside.

        • Yea I want something that I can carry around easily i.e chuck it on my lap, hold it with one hand and what not. I have tutorial sessions and I don't always have access to a desk. I know a laptop would meet my needs in terms of performance and software. But I need something with good and easy accessibility. Basically I used to print lecture notes and write on them, I need to replace all that with one device onto which I can access and annotate all lecture material and write my own notes. Writing notes is too slow now I need to type them and keep up the pace that way.

I dont really want to computerize my uni material and study notes, but I have to because its hard to keep up with paper and pen.

I have a gaming PC at home so I feel its better for me to look towards a lightweight, touch device that can run the internet, PDFs, and word docs.

          @cool kid:

Then my advise is to check 12 inch 2 in 1 devices with core m and ssd inside, ie sp4 m3. They are normally 1.1 kg with keyboard. Or check those 13 inch super light laptops, some of them are even lighter than 1 kg. However you cannot split the screen and keyboard and some of very light ones do not support touch. Of course you need to consider your budget.

    • Yeah…not a fan of these hybrid tablet / notebooks. With that said I did get suckered in and I bought one from JB last year. Wasn't really happy with it to be honest. Battery life wasn't great and then HDD went after a month had to return it.

Also you're definitely right the atom z8300 is pretty crap and basically makes it little more than a glorified netbook. If you're in the market for a notebook / laptop you might as well dish out like $100 more and get a Lenovo or Asus. You can pick up a pretty decent from Scorptec with an i5-5200U for just under $700

Sales are too slow on this 'low cost' tablet, Microsoft is stopping production on it by December.

    • +1

the question is really is it stopping because a successor is due out in the second half of the year. Given the next gen processor timeline that could be the case, I know quite a few people that have been holding off buying the Surface 3 as they have been expecting its successor to be right around the corner.

best thing about costco is its 100% satisfaction guarantee… if you get my drift…

  • clearing stock for SP5 and SB2

Not sure if its helpful or not but I was at JB HiFI today (Enex100 - Perth City) and was looking at this very model, ticket price was $698 and the staff came over and said, oh they are cheaper than the ticket, I said OK by how much, she said that one is $600 flat.

    • 128gb model i may try to see whats the final price because i still have a jbhifi card

  • Have a look at this for something similar but with a Core M cpu, cheaper too. http://www.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_252601.html

    • Wonder if they really "post".

  • This is end of life product. It should, therefore be discounted even more.

Microsoft will stop making the Surface 3 in December 2016

The low-cost tablet will bow out after more than a year and a half on store shelves.

After that, there will be no more surface 3 in retail and probably not much updates.

After December this will be a deleted model, obsolete model or superceded model but not new model.

Microsoft will stop making the Surface 3 in December 2016

      That's six months away.

It's still a current product and will be discounted more when there's a replacement product out.
